Oslo to Bergen, Norway by Train through the mountains and Boat through the fjords

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
We’re going to take you on one of the most spectacular train rides in all of Europe: starting in Oslo, we’re heading cross-country through fascinating mountain terrain, passing lakes and rivers and waterfalls, and then by boat through a vast fjord, finally we will be arriving later in the day at the ancient capital of Norway the town of Bergen. This special trip is called Norway in a Nutshell. Showing you a big cross-section of the country in just one day.
Please subscribe:
The scenery keeps getting more spectacular as we climb through the central regions of Norway, getting a little bit like Switzerland with tall mountains in the distance and glaciers, with lakes where the water is clear blue color.
We change trains mid-way at Myrdal and board the Flam railway which is one of the most scenic rides in Europe. It travels about four miles from the mountain tops down through seven lush valleys to the waters below in the Sognefjord, Norway’s largest fjord. There we catch a boat to Bergen through the Sognefjord. There's lots of great scenery during the boat ride, with the mountains towering high above on both sides of this chasm.

West Norway - SERIES PREVIEW - Fjords, Waterfalls, World Class Railway Journeys and More!

West Norway has some of the best Fjords, Waterfalls and World Class Railway Journeys and we'll
explore Norway's majestic landscapes in this mini-series over 4 weeks. Starting this weekend.

From the vibrant city of Bergen, we take a scenic drive to our riverside cabin on the outskirts of Voss, in the vicinity of one of the most famous fjords in the country Hardanger Fjord.
From our cabin we take an incredible road trip, taking in some of the best cascading waterfalls, Fjords, and cute villages in the area.

Our journey then takes us to Flåm, a fairytale village situated at the innermost point of Aurlandsfjord, a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. Here, we explore the Flam Railway, a remarkable experience winding through 20 kilometres of sensational scenery, with a steep gradient and hairpin turns that take your breath away.

There are also a number of spectacular things to see in the areas around Flåm, with waterfalls, hidden vantage points to catch the railway train, tiny villages clinging to the banks of the Fjord, and a hair-razing drive to the famous Stegastein viewpoint that extends 30 meters out from the mountain, hovering 650 meters above the Aurlandsfjord for just jaw-dropping views if you can stomach it.

Back in Bergen, we share some highlights of this pretty coastal city, particularly Bryggen. A series of colourful wooden buildings lining the waterfront and dating back to the Hanseatic League, a trading alliance that dominated northern Europe from the 14th to the 17th centuries.

To end our Norway adventures we’ll take another spectacular rail journey from Bergen to Oslo. Also tagged as one of the greatest scenic rides in the world.
Covering a distance of approximately 496 km (308 miles) and taking around 7 hours to complete, it passes through some of the most stunning landscapes along the way and climbs 1222 metres above sea level to the highest station in the country Finse.

Join us for lots of amazing scenery, helpful tips and ideas so you can follow our footsteps and make West Norway your next travel adventure.

BERGEN, NORWAY | Best Things To Do In & Around Bergen

The city of Bergen is located along the southwestern coast of Norway. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, it’s a haven for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. But as a UNESCO World Heritage City, Bergen also combines history, culture, and an interesting urban life. This charming city might have a small-town feel, but it has tons of entertaining activities to offer. In this video, we break down our 6 favorite things to do in and around Bergen.

???? WHERE TO STAY IN BERGEN:
- Barfot Apartments (budget option with kitchen in center of town):

6. Try the local food
Norwegian culture is highly influenced by fishing and this is also visible in their cuisine. Visit Bergen’s fish market at the waterfront and you’ll see merchants selling their fresh catch of the day as they have for centuries. Other dishes Norwegians are proud of is “boller” (sweet buns) and “Pølse” (Norwegian hot dogs).

5. Visit a museum on a rainy day
Bergen has many interesting museums that you can visit, such as the Norway Fisheries Museum, the Lepra museum, and the Bergen University Museum of Natural History.

☑️ List of more museums:

4. Day hike to highest peak in Bergen municipality
Sitting between various mountains, Bergen naturally has plenty of great hiking terrain. At 987 meters tall, Gullfjellet is the highest peak in Bergen municipality and a classic for local hikers. Located a bit outside the city, this trail feels truly remote and is a great escape. The trail starts at Osavatnet and runs past a cabin (Redningshytten) on the way to the summit. To get to the trailhead, it’s best to rent a car or combine public transportation with a taxi ride.

3. Bryggen & the Hanseatic Museum
Bryggen is one of Bergen's most iconic and popular attractions. With its vibrant atmosphere, you will find plenty of things to do. You can stroll through the narrow, crooked alleyways, grab a local beer at one of the many cafés, and learn about its historic importance at the Hanseatic Museum. A free guided tour is included when visiting the museum, during which you get to know more about the Hanseatic merchants and their daily life at Bryggen.

☑️ Book your visit:

2. Hike one of the 7 peaks
Bergen is surrounded by seven peaks, and you can hike them all! The most popular ones are Mount Fløyen and Mount Ulriken, which are easily accessible by foot or bus from the city center. Both are short but steep hikes of a few kilometers each, offering spectacular views of the city, the fjord, and the ocean from the top. There is a cable car to Ulriken and a railway to Fløyen if you don't want to hike.

1. Fjord Cruise
Norway is known for its fjords, and so is Bergen. If this is your first time in Norway, make sure to go on a day tour of the fjords. Bergen offers a wide variety of guided tours, with Mostraumen being the most popular and accessible one. During a 3 hour cruise, you will see the varied western Norway fjord landscapes, consisting of steep cliffs and waterfalls. You eventually reach the Mostraumen Strait and the tiny village of Mo!

7:17 - Skjolden
7:40 - Olden

Outdoor adventure meets urban excitement in Stavanger, a destination with rich Nordic history, a growing foodie scene, and a convenient location near stunning natural wonders. A hike up to Pulpit Rock takes you above Lysefjord to a spectacular flat plateau, where your reward will be a once-in-a-lifetime view of the bright blue waters and mountain peaks all around. Stroll through Old Stavanger, where hundreds of white wooden buildings from the 18th century adorn the cobblestone streets.

Known as the heart of the fjords, Bergen is a harbor town surrounded by Norwegian fjords. Its most recognized landmark is Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where picture-ready, colorful wooden buildings line the waterfront. Bryggen has remained virtually unchanged since the 12th century and stands as a monument to Norway’s rich trading history.

Flam is a small town located on the Aurlandsfjord and surrounded by astounding natural beauty. Hop on the Flam Railway and witness majestic mountains, sprawling rivers, and stunning waterfalls. Sail down the Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Norway’s most scenic fjords. Glide past lush green cliffs, snow-topped hills, and waterside farms and villages.

For one of the best views in all of Norway and an unbeatable photo op, head to Stegastein Viewpoint, a curved platform that edges almost 100 feet off of the mountain, where you’ll be suspended over 2,000 feet above Aurlandsfjord.

Sail down the emerald green waters of Norway's most famous fjord to reach Geiranger, a secluded village surrounded by rugged beauty and the perfect jumping-off point for exciting outdoor excursions. Make your way up 4,500 feet of Mount Dalsnibba to reach Europe’s highest fjord viewpoint.

Skjolden, a tiny village located at the end of Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in the world. Take an idyllic hike in Mørkridsdalen Valley, where you’ll pass by small lakes, waterfalls, and colorful fauna.

In the port of Olden, marvel at colorful coastal towns nestled within the base of towering mountains. Embark on a scenic boat tour and sail along the sparkling emerald waters. Or trek through the Norwegian wild to reach Briksdal Glacier, the largest and most famous glacier in all of Europe.

During a Northern European cruise, you can visit Oslo, Norway’s cosmopolitan capital full of cultural attractions and world-class museums.

On a cruise to Norway with Celebrity, spectacular fjords, majestic mountain ranges, and picturesque towns await.
