Life in South Korea VS North Korea

Life In South Korea VS North Korea. North Korea and South Korea are not just two countries with similar names. They are not just neighbors. In an ideal situation, the two countries are twin nations. The entire Korean peninsula was once a single country about a century ago. When Second World War tore the country in two, the United States and the Soviet Union got opportunities to carve it down in the middle and form two distinct nations severed by neocolonialism promoting two ruling opposing ideologies.
While the dust of World War II was settling, it became apparent that Japan which that had occupied the peninsula for decades would surrender to the Allied forces. The global concern then was about what would be Korea’s fate. The truce 70 years ago was to divide Korea along the 38th parallel in August 1945. Thus, the United States agreed to take the southern part of the country while the northern part would come under the control of the Soviet Union. That was 70 years ago. Since then, have the two Koreas lost their unifying factor? Let’s compare living in South Korea and life in North Korea to find the answer.

Life in South Korea vs North Korea
To analyze life in South Korea versus life in North Korea, many factors must be considered. After the end of the hostilities of the Korean War in 1953, the two Koreas took dramatically different paths. The different paths they took had two different effects on their economies and living standards. The difference is crystal clear; everyone who cares can see it.

My life in North Korea vs South Korea

UPDATE. A year after publishing this video, I decided to make another video that explains why it might not be a good idea to travel to North Korea yourself: I know it's ironic of me to say it as I've been there myself, but please think twice before making that decision. Also, if you want to learn more about the history of North Korea, watch this other video I made that's only 4 minutes long:

One year ago I went on a strictly guided 7 day-tour in North Korea where they took away my passport and did not allow me to explore anything on my own. North Korea was definitely the weirdest country I had ever visited and throughout that trip I kept wondering what life was like in the neighboring South Korea, because it used to be the same country just over 60 years ago.

To answer my questions, this year I traveled to South Korea and made this video, where I compare my time in the North and my time in the South. I still have a lot of questions about the whole situation, but one thing was clear - the daily lives of the Korean people couldn't be any more different than they are right now.

My favorite books about North Korea:

Dear Leader by Jang Jin Sung -
Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden -
Nothing To Envy by Barbara Demick -
1984 by George Orwell (I couldn't believe how similar some things in North Korea felt to the ones in the book) -

Touring North Korea's capital and bowing to the 'Great' Leaders! | North Korea day 3 ????????

A very interesting day visiting the Bronze statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, touring the Victorious war museum which holds the only captured US ship in the world that's still on the commissioned roster! Stopping by the Monument to the party founding, visiting Kim Il Sung square. Checking out some ridiculous propaganda in a bookshop, ascending the Juche stone tower with a 360 degree view of Pyongyang, shopping in a local mall, visiting the birthplace of Kim Il Sung, attending a school children's show and taking a stroll along Science street! We did a lot!

What School Lunch Looks Like Around The World

Five Days in North Korea - Pyongyang, DMZ, Dandong train

An informative travel log from a visit to the most isolated country in the world, including a review of food and accommodation.

North Korean People's Study House - Pyongyang, DPRK

The North Korean People's Study House and Central Library was constructed in a traditional Korean style in April 1982 over a period of 21 months to celebrate leader Kim Il-sung's 70th birthday. It has a total floor space of 100,000m2 and 600 rooms. The library was opened as the centre for the project of intellectualising the whole of society and a sanctuary of learning for the entire people.

The building can house up to 30 million books, it alsocontains around 10,800 documents, books and on the spot guidance Kim Il-sung wrote. Foreign publications are available only with special permission. Writings of Kim Jong-il are also included.

The library is the national centre of Juche studies, with one North Korean guide claiming to study the Great Leader Kim Il-sung and Dear Leader Kim Jong-il for a total of 90 minutes a day. Lectures on a variety of subjects also take place. One of which is partly shown (in Korean) in this film.

North Korean Impressions

The clip is the summary of impressions gathered in North Korea during a week-long trip at the beginning of April 2013. Unique footage showing live inside North Korea, describing the conditions on the ground at the time when political propaganda has reached fever pitch. News reports give the impression that the bombs can start falling any minute, but what is it really like on the ground in the country?
Scenes from Pyongyang, Kaeson City, Panmunjom and the North Korean countryside.

NORTH KOREA military parade│ Vlog (2017)

I spent 3 days in North Korea during the celebrations of Kim Il Sung's 105th Anniversary: the Day of the Sun. This is what I saw.

(Below information was added in late 2021)

That year was particularly special because of the 105th Anniversary. Digital devices were strictly prohibited for the two most startling things I saw (and there are no pictures at all on the internet):
- unexpectedly, we've got invited to watch a very carefully arranged military parade
- the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun (Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il Mausoleum): with airport-like security. Strict rules apply, like bowing at each side of the embalmed body. The most well-groomed building I've been to and polished floor I've seen.

I took a 5-day tour from Beijing. It was actually 3 full days in North Korea since the first and last days are for arriving and leaving the country. Whether by train - the cheaper option and the one I chose or taking a flight from Beijing to Pyongyang with Air Koryo, a North Korean airline.

It is mandatory to go with an agency (there's no way of going solo). In my case, I went with Young Pioneer Tours. It looked easy-going and the most affordable option (at least at the moment, I don't know now). Trips to the DPRK are quite expensive (it is/was a good source of income for the country). The whole process was very smooth.

At the initial meeting in Beijing, there is an overview of the rules that we have to comply with. Remember, you are in a completely different country, with its own rules and law. For your own good, it is better to follow them and go unnoticed.

The Parade (Defilada) 1989 - Full Movie [Digital reconstruction]

Movie description:
The ceremonies commemorating the 40th anniversary of the proclamation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea coincided with the XXVI Olympic Games in Seoul. The communist authorities in Pyongyang aimed to organize a national celebration that would overshadow the world's sporting event with its grandeur and expressive power. What was the outcome?

Andrzej Fidyk meticulously documents the course of the festivities, capturing everything the Koreans wanted to showcase. Thus, we not only see footage from Kim Il-sung Square and Stadium but also visit the birthplace of the Great Leader, a North Korean kindergarten, the Youth Palace, and even the Museum of Friendship, which houses 43,000 gifts for the eldest of the Kims. The author refrains from providing personal commentary, allowing the images to speak for themselves.
