Ski Touring in the Lyngen Alps | Norway | 4K

Last winter I took a trip to Northern Norway - spending a week in Alta crossing the Finnmark Plateau - before flying back 'down south' to Tromsø and spending a further week ski touring in the Lyngen Alps.

Staying in Lyngen itself in a lodge by the water, I became an adopted Austrian for a week - taking ferries between Fjords to tour various local Fjellets - with a group of skiers from Österreich.

Conditions were very mixed but there's something so pure about skiing in Norway - away from the lifts and home comforts of man made resorts - with epic views across the Fjords (when the weather is kind).

Even on the harsh days, I really enjoy the cold sharp wind in your face.

Almost like skiing the way it was always intended to be.

Best BC Ski Boots - ALFA Outback A/P/S GTX

Hope you've enjoyed this review. Consider supporting the channel and buying me a coffee: buymeacoff.ee/roboutdoorprep

From the manufacturer:
This comfortable and extra warm backcountry ski boot has an integrated gaiter with a two-way zipper for enhanced ventilation, making it ideal for use on long, cold trips, as well as in loose snow. The boot is a further developed model of the bestsellers Outback A/P/S GTX and BC Gaiter A/P/S GTX. The new and stable inner boot is equipped with flex zones for comfortable skiing and ALFA Double Lock System to ease individual adjustment and bettering stability in descents. Outback A/P/S 2.0 GTX is winter lined with a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX membrane and has a thermal insulating midsole to keep your feet dry and warm. RECCO avalanche system is integrated in the boot for extra safety. Furthermore, it is reinforced with Kevlar in exposed areas for the most demanding backcountry ski touring in the mountains and alpine environments. Extra toe reinforcements protect the leather from sharp ski edges . With a thermal insulating midsole and a heel shape to prevent this boot does not let the conditions end your adventure. Note that certain snow/crust conditions are an extreme strain on the boot’s materials, and with use under such conditions, increased wear is expected.

Applications
- Backcountry skiing day trips
- Multiday backcountry skiing trips
- Hilly backcountry skiing
- Backcountry skiing in loose snow

Details
- WEIGHT: 925 g per boot (EU 42)
- SHAFT HEIGHT: 17,5 cm (EU 42)

Best Back Country Skis - Åsnes Amundsen Fram Waxless

Hope you've enjoyed this review. Consider supporting the channel and buying me a coffee: buymeacoff.ee/roboutdoorprep

From the manufacturer:
Åsnes Amundsen Fram Waxless is a waxless ski, stiff along its length, narrow enough for groomed tracks but perfectly at home in the mountains.

A ski for long mountain excursions, with a higher pocket over the grip zone than the Amundsen, the full steel edge, and the stiffness and stability of the Amundsen Fram Waxless make it ideal for treks with extra weight – perfect for adventurers planning long trips with a sled or heavy loads.

The Åsnes fish-scale pattern provides excellent grip, regardless of condition, without time spent waxing.

Amundsen skis are equipped with Skinlock, ready for an X-Skin to be locked into the center of the ski in seconds. So although the Amundsen BC is narrow enough for groomed tracks, climbing skin can be instantly attached for climbing.

Roald Amundsen (1872–1928), the first man to reach both the South and North Poles, was a polar explorer, discoverer, researcher and flight pioneer. He navigated the Northwest Passage and was a pioneer in the use of airships and planes in polar research. Many of his expeditions were made with the Polar ship ‘Fram’, owned by the explorer Frijdtof Nansen.

Choosing the right length
Ski length is determined according to body weight and height. The table below is only a guide, however – experience, skill, terrain, and individual needs can all influence your choice of length.

Generally speaking, moving through rugged terrain calls for shorter skis than the open mountain plateau. And for beginners, short skis are easier to control. If you’re mainly skiing along tracks, the length isn’t the most crucial factor. For good float on deep snow, a slighter wider ski is useful. Lighter skiers might consider a shorter ski; heavier skiers a longer ski. Skiers with loads such as backpacks and sleds might consider a longer ski.

North to south Alpine crossing on touring skis | Switzerland Tourism | Switzerland Tourism

In mediaeval times, Romans, knights and travellers attempting to cross the Alps often found that they had bitten off more than they could chew. Technical pioneers later connected north to south by building the Gotthard Tunnel. But for mountaineers, the mountain massif remains one thing and one thing only: a giant playground. We journeyed from north to south with Dani Arnold, starting in Andermatt and ending in Locarno.

4K Drive Tour | Gotthard Pass, Switzerland: The Most Important Alpine Crossing Of All Time

A 4K Drive Tour for your entertainment and relaxation, this is a drive tour of the Gotthard Pass in Switzerland which is the most important alpine crossing of all time.

Filmed on June 2021, the Gotthard Pass is considered to be the primary trans-Alpine route in Switzerland not only linking the north and the south of the country, but also the north and south of Europe since the 13th century. The Gotthard Pass which traverses the St. Gotthard Massif at an elevation of 2,106 m above sea level (6,909 ft) started out as a muleteer's trail. Trading prospered and so the first road was constructed in 1830. In 1882, a railway tunnel beneath the Pass - touted as the longest in the world at that time at 15 km long - began its operation. Tons of goods from Europe (north to south and vice versa) and even from faraway China (arrived in Rotterdam but final destination was Italy or Austria) reached their destination through the Gotthard Railway Tunnel. During World War II, when Nazi Germany invaded Europe, neutral Switzerland dug passages, tunnels and bunkers out of the mountain including that of St. Gotthard Massif as part of its defense strategy. In 1980, the Gotthard Road Tunnel opened to accommodate at least 1,500 vehicles per hour. In 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel began its operation accommodating freight and passenger trains on shorter journey time, and up to the present, is the longest railway tunnel in the world at 57 kms in length.

With the opening of the road and base tunnels, the economic significance of the Gotthard Pass decreased over time. It, however, remains a popular destination for cyclists and tourists with cars. There are several hotels and hostels in and around the Gotthard Pass area to accommodate hikers and tourists alike, as well as hiking trails to suit one's ability, physique and psyche.

The classic alpine crossing: 6-day tour on the route E5 from Oberstdorf to Meran through the beautiful alpine terrain.

Episode 8: Skiing the North Coast in Quebec - Long distance skiing adventure

We finally start our ski adventure after a long preparation. The first day we have the worst possible start. We have to turn around and change our plans, but that's part of doing something new. We make a new start and are learning a new skill very quick. Before this ski trip we had zero experience with winter camping and skiing. It's our first winter adventure and we start with long ski trip on the North Shore in Quebec. That's how we like to do it. We believe that dreams have no limitations, you only make them yourself. The first night in the tent the temperature dropped to -29 degrees and we were warm in our sleeping bags. But more important, we loved it!

We are Zoë and Olivier, together we are WeLeaf. We are travelling around the world on human power since September 2016. We left Amsterdam by bicycle, hitchhiked across the Atlantic Ocean, cycled the Americas, north and south, hiked on the AT and did the complete Northern Forest Canoe Trail.
