Discovering Jersey - the island of dreams (and nightmares)

#jersey #channelislands
Jersey is in the Channel Islands, just off the coast of northern France but they belong to the UK. Or do they? In fact, this is just one of the many mysteries of this beautiful little island that we attempt to uncover during our five night Cosmos Stay and Explore trip. There's so much to unpack and so much to discover we just had to make a video to try and convey our surprise at how much we fell in love with this island, it's quirky and unique features and it's horrific and harrowing journey through enforced occupation by the Nazis in World War Two. If you've never been, this little video journal will hopefully inspire you to find out more.

Voluntary Disclosure:
We were invited to Jersey as guests of Cosmos. We paid for our own flights to Jersey and received no fees or remuneration for producing media during and after this trip from Cosmos. Any resulting videos have been produced without influence or expectation from Cosmos and we had complete editorial and artistic freedom. Nowhere to Grow: Designing green spaces in a towering city

Recorded at HOTA, Home of the Arts on Wednesday 12 October, part of Gold Coast Open House 2022

From Elkhorn to Pine, Staghorn to Norfolk, our Surfers Paradise avenues and streets are named for striking trees and vibrant plants. But as taller and taller towers squeeze onto smaller and smaller sites, are we designing spaces that allow them to grow?

What is paradise without its trees?
Will the Gold Coast become just another hot and heartless concrete jungle?

In this Open House Talks session, we were joined by a group of panellists who have seen and been part of the Gold Coast’s evolution into a high-rise, beachfront city. Together they discussed why we need to pay attention to space for life on the streets, and how we can do it – from attractive walkable streets, to spaciousness and greenery.

Leading the discussion:

Dr Rosemary Kennedy FRAIA, Director, SubTropical Cities

In conversation with:

John Punch OAM, Board Member, Destination Gold Coast
Kate Rogers, Urban Planner, City of Gold Coast
Greg Forgan-Smith, Principal, Forgan Smith Architects
Gerard McCormick, Director, 8LA Landscape Architecture

London TravelWatch Bus Summit

London TravelWatch will be hosting a 90 minute online summit at 10.00am on Friday 3 December, where we will be focusing on the importance of bus priority. The event is being held in memory of our former Deputy Chair, Ruth Thompson.

We know that the bus is important to Londoners, indeed more people use the bus than any other type of public transport in the capital. But bus travel can be slow and unreliable. By giving the bus more priority on London’s roads, passengers will be able to enjoy shorter journey times and more reliable services, which will also encourage more people to use the bus.

During the summit we will:

- Launch our ‘day in the life of a bus’ video showing what it’s like on the roads for buses and their passengers
- Reveal the financial benefits that can come from operating more efficient bus journeys
- Hear from TfL and the boroughs about the importance of the bus to them.

We’d love for you to join us. We’ll also have a live Q&A session at the end where you will be able to send in your questions to the speakers to answer. We’ll send you details later about how you can get involved on the day.

We hope that is all clear. But if you have any questions ahead of the event, please do send us a message at events@londontravelwatch.org.uk and one of our team will be happy to help you.
