Nicosia / Lefkosia, Cyprus - the Last Divided City in Europe - Tourist Attractions

You can always buy me a coffee to support the channel:

The capital of Cyprus Nicosia or Lefkosia in Greek remains the last divided city in Europe. Since the Turkish invasion of Northern Cyprus in 1974, the city has been divided between the Republic of Cyprus and the unrecognised Republic of Northern Cyprus (under Turkish control). Both parts are separated by a buffer zone or green line which remains uninhabited to the day. To visit the Turkish side of the city, you have to cross at the checkpoint in Ledra Street, one of the main shopping streets in the center of Nicosia. And so I did. Nicosia is a relatively small city and most of the major tourist attractions on both the Greek and Turkish sides can be seen in just a couple of hours. So check out what you can expect as a tourist in Nicosia and don't forget to like the video, if you have enjoyed it!

This trip marked the start of my efforts to make a YouTube full-time job.

After that European trip I went heavily into exploring Asia, visiting India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Kazakhstan (seeing me cover a lot of Far East and Southeast Asia in particular).

I have also travelled to North Africa and the Middle East fairly extensively over the last five years, filming videos in Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Palestine.

To date, I have not yet been to Australasia or South America. Though I am hoping to visit the latter sometime in 2022, along with a first stop in the Caribbean.

I've travelled to North America just once as a YouTuber, visiting Mexico in 2021. Though I have been to both the USA and Canada, this was as a child on family holidays.

So far in 2022, I've taken my first trip to Sub Saharan Africa, visiting both Kenya and Tanzania, before making my way to the Middle East, stopping in Dubai on my way to Lebanon. Europe followed, starting with Cyprus, covering both the Greek and Turkish sides of the divided island.

Europe's last divided city, NICOSIA| 4K HD Walking Tour

According to Assyrian sources from the 7th Century BC, today's Nicosia then used to be a city named Ledra. In about 300 BC, the son of the Egyptian king Ptolemy, Lefkos, rebuilt the city, and his name is immortalised in the modern local name of Lefkosa (Turkish) or Lefkosia (Greek). Nicosia is the Frankish name of the city, and is thought to have appeared in the late 1100s. The name is mostly used by foreigners. The capital of the island, it is divided into Turkish occupied and Government controlled sectors by a boundary known as the green Line, which runs in an East-west direction.

In 1191, Richard the Lionheart, on his way to the Holy Land during the Third Crusade, captured the island as a response to actions against his fleet by the King of Cyprus. It was in Cyprus that Richard married Berengaria of Navarre, who was chosen as his wife by his mother, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Cyprus remained under Richard's rule for only a year. In 1192, he sold it to the Knights Templars who ruled the island from Nicosia. Life under the Templars was harsh, and they quickly incurred the hatred of the islanders. Unable to hold the island by force, the Templars begged Richard to take the island off their hands, and he quickly sold it to Guy de Lusignan who had lost his Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Nicosia has been the capital city of Cyprus since this time, and it flourished during the Lusignan era. Churches and palaces were built, and Nicosia grew in size and population. This glorious period in the history of the city ended in 1489 when the Venetians captured Cyprus.

The Venetians demolished most of the Lusignan monuments, including churches and palaces, and used the masonry to fortify the city against the anticipated Ottoman invasion. In 1567, just before the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottomans, the Venetians started to build new protective walls in place of the old Lusignan walls ringing the city, so as to be able to defend Nicosia. A famous Venetian engineer, Guillio Savorignano drew the plans for the walls. They were to have a circumference of three miles, 11 bastions, each like a castle, and three gates. The remnants of the walls still encircle the old city today. The three gates were the Kyrenia Gate in the north, the Famagusta Gate in the east, and the Paphos Gate in the west. The Kyrenia Gate is still intact today, and remains as an attractive historic monument of northern Nicosia.

In order to build the walls, the Venetians demolished houses, palaces, monasteries and churches outside the three mile circumference of the city, and used their stone in the construction of the walls. Consequently, there is no trace of the medieval settlement that once existed. However, their efforts did not prevent the island from falling to the forces of the Ottoman admiral Lala Mustafa Pasha in 1570, and thus the Venetians were defeated by the Ottomans before they had time to completive the construction of the walls.

After the conquest, the city gained new vigour, and mosques, baths and other institutions to meet the requirements of its new masters were established, and a new building activity began. Yet, to our day, the city has kept its oriental charm of a peaceful oasis where softly and beautifully shaped palm trees overhang the roofs.

In the old city, beautiful examples of Gothic and Ottoman architecture abound; the Selimiye Mosque, the Bedesten, and the Great Inn, to name just a few. Recent years have seen a renewed interest in urban regeneration which has seen many buildings sympathetically restored as part of the Nicosia Master Plan.

If your time in Nicosia is limited, perhaps the best way to get a flavour of the city is to take one of the free walking tours. These last for two hours, and look at the Mevlevi Museum, Samanbahce houses, The Venetian Column, the Great Inn, Selimiye Mosque, the Eaved House, Arasta and many other historical landmarks.

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is currently the biggest and most densely populated city in Cyprus. The developing, urban, yet historic and charming city of Nicosia is the major centre for arts, culture, diplomacy and business.

It is also the last divided capital city in the world, due to the fact that half of the city is under Turkish occupation, and not under control of the legal government, as a result of the Turkish military invasion of the island in 1974.

THE DIVIDED CAPITAL OF CYPRUS - NICOSIA CITY TOUR

Did you know that Nicosia or Lefkosia is the capital city of Cyprus and also is the world´s only partitioned or divided capital? It is also the furthest southeast of all capital cities in the European Union. If you are new to the history of Cyprus there has been a lot of conflict between the Greek- and Turkish Cypriots through history. UN has created a so called buffer zone which divides the country in to a northern Turkish section and a southern Greek area. This line goes right through Nicosia, dividing the city in to two parts. There are around 320 000 people who live in the city, and the area has been continuously inhabited for over 4500 years. In this travel vlog from Cyprus I bring you along on a city tour of the divided capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, and share my tips on what to see and do. I show you the best sigths, we get to learn more about the history of the city and where to get the best city views. Normally you are able to walk over the border to the Turkish side via the border crossing on Ledra Street. I also share a restaurant reccomendation that you do not want to miss out on.

I am Grace on Tour and travel has been my biggest passion ever since I can remember. My very first international trip was done two weeks after I was born. In the summer of 2018 I started posting on this channel as I set off on a trip around Asia before studying a semester in Taiwan. During this time my love for travel grew and I tried to travel to new places during my weekends off from university. Throughout uni I made travel a priority and worked multiple side jobs to fund my travels. After doing my thesis in Hong Kong I graduated in June 2019. At this point I decided to take a gap year and go traveling. My goal was to visit as many countries as possible. I soon realized that travel is what I love and wan´t to keep on doing. I now dream of visiting every country in the world.

Nicosia, Cyprus 2017 ????????: The World's Last Divided Capital (VLOG 3/6)

Nicosia, Greek: Lefkosia or Turkish: Lefkoşa - whatever you may call it, is the world's last divided capital - the capital of Cyprus. It is divided by the Green Line, a UN-controlled buffer zone. The southern part of town is Greek and the northern part has been part of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of North Cyprus since 1974! Crossing the border checkpoint at Ledra street, you are still in the same city, but it feels like you have crossed into another country. In North Cyprus, you pay with Turkish Lira instead of Euros, there are mosques, Turkish coffee and çay as well as typical Turkish food. North Cyprus is a de facto state that is considered to be occupied Cypriot territory by the international community - when you are there, you could easily believe that you are in Turkey!

The most interesting sights in Lefkoşa (the part of town north of the Green Line) include the Selimiye Mosque, Büyük Han with its shops and restaurants, Kyrenia (Girne) Gate, the Venetian Column with its pigeons and many more sights that mostly originate from the Ottoman Empire.

In the southern Greek Cypriot part, the museum and observatory on Ledra street is a must-do, giving a great overview of the city. There are numerous great cafés to hang out and relax.

Follow me on my one-week road trip across the island of CYPRUS in February 2017 - visiting Larnaca, Cape Greko, Ayia Napa, Nissi Beach, Nicosia (Lefkosia/Lefkoşa), Troodos Mountains, Paphos, Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock), Kourion, Limassol and Governor's Beach.

Part 1 (Larnaca):
Part 2 (Ayia Napa, Cape Greko, Nissi Beach):

Part 4 will feature Troodos mountains - coming soon!

Explore Nicosia, Cyprus

Exclusively produced for MyCyprusTravel, Kristy Agapiou explores Cyprus and highlights special attractions throughout the island.
This 5 minute video features Nicosia: Cyprus’s capital and Europe’s last divided city. Embraced by formidable Venetian walls, the old city weaves a tale of conquering empires, each of which have left their architectural mark – the Venetian walls, the Byzantine Archbishop’s Palace, and much more. At Ledras Street, you will catch a glimpse of the Green Line that has divided the capital since the Turkish invasion of 1974. Despite this divide, Nicosia is a thriving, dynamic city known for its shopping and nightlife.

Explore Nicosia / Lefkosia The Capital of Cyprus

Nicosia is a relatively small city and most of the major tourist attractions on both the Greek and Turkish sides can be seen in just a couple of hours. So check out what you can expect as a tourist in Nicosia.

Nicosia, also known as Lefkosia, is the divided capital city of Cyprus. South of the border, on the Greek side, the Cyprus Museum has archaeological finds from the Neolithic to Byzantine periods, including the Aphrodite of Soloi statue. Nearby, the old city’s 16th-century Venetian walls include the Famagusta, Kyrenia and Paphos gates. Inside the walls, a marble mausoleum sits next to 19th-century Faneromeni Church.
