VOLCANO BOARDING | LEON, NICARAGUA

BLOG:

Volcano Boarding in Leon Nicaragua was one of the main things I wanted to do on this trip through Central America. When I was in Mexico, I had seen a video about Leon Nicaragua and people travelling through Nicaragua, and once I saw people boarding down a volcano, I noted that as a must do thing, and must hit place on the trip. Arrival in Leon and Nicaragua was not the smoothest, but after growing a very strong liking to the town of Leon, I finally found a good place to book my volcano boarding tour!

Woke up in the morning in a sunny Leon, and got filled up on some eggs and gallo pinto, a very Nicaraguan staple breakfast, and before I could do my intro to the video on Volcano Boarding, I was already getting picked up! A couple of my friends from France had signed up for the same volcano boarding tour and we all headed outside of the town of Leon, to Cerro Negro volcano, with our overalls and volcano boards. By volcano board, I mean volcano plywood because thats basically what it is. Also, by boarding they mean simply sledding. The boards are not designed like sand boards where you can actually turn, and the rocks on the volcano would make it very difficult anyways.

Beautiful but bumpy drive outside of Leon, we arrived at Cerro Negro and started the hike up the volcano. At the top, even the video does not do it justice, we saw the sheer slope of the volcano but also a tremendous 360 degree view, north to Honduras, south to Leon and West to the Pacific Ocean and Pacific Coast of Nicaragua.

Arrival in Leon, Nicaragua |

Overalls on, goggles up, balaclava fastened, I was ready to go! As I saw my friend from France take off on her board down the volcano, I noticed it was difficult for her to pick up speed, so I was determined to lean back and use my weight to get myself going. Boy did I go! Over even the small bumps, my volcano board and I took air and eventually ripped apart my shoes trying to brake!

What an experience. You only go down the volcano once, so make sure not to hold back! Also, the rock on the volcano is actually quite soft, considering it is rock, so dont worry about falling off, and if you do, just hold your arms in so you dont pop out, or break any appendages!

What a rush. Make sure to subscribe and check out all the videos from before, and the videos to come, including more from Leon, Nicaragua, and the other towns in NIcaragua, and the other countries in Latin America that are on the way!

Five reasons to visit Nicaragua

From its colonial cities to its fabulous food, here's why you should add Nicaragua to your travel wishlist...

NICARAGUA | BACKPACKING TRIP ????????

Nicaragua was our fourth country of our backpacking trip through Central America. We came from the border Honduras - Nicaragua and started in Leon. Unfortunately we skipped vulcano boarding here, because it was almost 40 degrees every day.. After Leon we went to Managua and stepped on the plain to the Corn Islands! We spent 2 days at Big Corn and about a week on little corn, this was just paradise! After the corn islands we went to Granada, Ometepe and San Juan del Sur. We stayed in San Juan during easter, so we did a lot of partying and of course Sunday Funday! Nicaragua is a beautiful and diverse country, I highly recommend to go there!

Nicaragua - 2023 4K

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, bordered by Honduras to the north, the Caribbean to the east, Costa Rica to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Managua is the country's capital and largest city. As of 2015, it was estimated to be the third largest city in Central America. Nicaragua's multiethnic population of six million includes people of mestizo, Indigenous, European and African heritage. The main language is Spanish. Indigenous tribes on the Mosquito Coast speak their own languages and English.
Originally inhabited by various indigenous cultures since ancient times, the region was conquered by the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. Nicaragua gained independence from Spain in 1821. Since its independence, Nicaragua has undergone periods of political unrest, dictatorship, occupation and fiscal crisis, including the Nicaraguan Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s and the Contra War of the 1980s.
The mixture of cultural traditions has generated substantial diversity in folklore, cuisine, music, and literature. Known as the land of lakes and volcanoes, Nicaragua is also home to the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve, the second-largest rainforest of the Americas. The biological diversity, warm tropical climate and active volcanoes make Nicaragua an increasingly popular tourist destination.

Volcano Boarding in Nicaragua - Cerro Negro

For this Daventure, my twin brother, Joe, joined me in the beautiful adventure hotspot of Nicaragua. We stayed in the city of Leon and took the volcano boarding tour that Bigfoot Hostel organized. We hopped in the back of the bright orange truck and were hauled to the foot of Cerro Negro, the active ash volcano. We carried the toboggans they provided us all the way up the volcano for about an hour before we reached the very breezy summit. After getting suited up, in our coveralls, it was time to sled down. The ride down was very bumpy, dirty, and rocks were pelting our faces for most of it. I got to a speed of 59 kph (37 mph). I think the record for our group that day was 70 kph. Volcano boarding is definitely one of the best things to do in Nicaragua.

After feeling refreshed and rejuvenated from the beautiful beaches of El Salvador, Macca and Brianna got back to doing what they do best – backpacking around and experiencing all a country has to offer, this time in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua came with the tag as being a bit of a favourite amongst other travellers, so Macca and Brianna we’re extremely excited to see what it had to offer and whether it lived up to its reputation for themselves.

What they discovered was a country of unparalleled beauty, kind and generous people, and enough adventure activities to keep any adrenaline junkie happy.

In this episode Macca and Brianna try out volcano boarding for the first time, hike to the top of El Hoyo before swimming in a crater lake, spend a night on the tiles in San Juan del Sur, even manage to pick up a new travelling companion, before finishing off zooming around the island Ometepe.

In the end, Nicaragua truly lived up to its reputation, and it quickly became one of our favourite countries in the whole world. Next up, we went to go and see what Costa Rica had to offer.

VOLCANO BOARDING Cerro Negro in León, Nicaragua - BIGFOOT HOSTEL

Boarding down an active volcano: CHECK ✓
Cerro Negro is located outside of León, Nicaragua, and has an elevation of approximately 728 m. It takes around 1 hour to hike up the volcano and between 1-3 minutes to slide down. The views from the top are incredible!!

Bigfoot Hostel has tours that leave daily @ 9 AM. It costs $25 per person and includes a free t-shirt, transportation to and from the volcano, all equipment needed, and a beer (as a reward for sliding down). You do have to pay an additional $5 entrance fee into the National Park, so pack that with you, and bring another $3-5 to give to the locals that will carry your sled up the volcano (totally worth it because they are HEAVY)!!

I got the second-fastest female score in our group, coming in hot at 38km/h. How fast were you?

Travel to NICARAGUA | Volcano Boarding, City Exploration, Beaches + Tourist Safety | TRAVEL VLOG

NICARAGUA is a backpackers paradise, it's been heavily affected by civil conflict and we were some of the first tourists to return to places such as Leon and Granada after troubles had calmed down.

Nicaragua is full of wild adventure and travel here is easy and felt safe. In 2020 it should be considered as a travel destination, for backpackers or for a holiday. If you want to chill, the colonial towns of Leon and Granada are perfect, they are returning to strength after tourism collapsed in 2018/19. We took a walking tour to learn about the history and the recent issues. Our guide was very kind and showed incredible strength to endure such difficult times.

We also took on wild adventure by hiking and then volcano boarding down Cerro Negro, an active volcano. The team at Volcano Day were amazing and a great trip to do in a day in Leon.

Taking tourist safety to new extremes we decided to risk the local 'chicken' buss to get around and show you that it can be safe to do so, you just have to be careful, know a bit about prices before and people were willing to help. Street smarts go a LONG way!

In Grenada, we checked out the local markets (yes it is safe for tourist) but you might not enjoy the traditional dishes. Also, nature took us by surprise when we took a boat tour of Lake Granada and the islets/ islas that form a nature explosion of birds, mixed with local people living nomadic fisherman lives.

It is a beautiful place, it can feel run down and intimidating at times, but overall tourist safety is good as the industry was so affected by trouble, they do not want to harm any rebuilding of reputation.

Again, these are just our experiences and opinions and things could change at anytime. Happy Travels!
