Nicaragua - leon
León is one of the oldest cities in Nicaragua.
León is named after León, Spain. After independence, the elites of León and Granada struggled over which city would be the capital. León was dominated by the liberals and Granada by the conservatives. The fighting ended when Managua became the capital.
After Granada, which is better preserved, León has the best colonial architecture in Nicaragua. It is a university town that stubbornly remains somewhat pro-Sandinista. During the 1979 revolution, the Sandinistas took over León in violent street by street fighting. Somoza then had the city bombed, an unforgivable move considering he was bombing his own people. The National Guard took León back over, again in street by street fighting, but this time less intense since the Sandinistas melted away. Finally, the Sandinistas took León back over and held it until the Somoza government fell. You can still see bullet marks on some buildings. Also, there is a shell of a church on the road out of town that was destroyed during the bombing. Across the street from this church is the Museo de las Mytos y Leyendas Tradiciones (Museum of Myths and Legends), which prominently displays a statute of a Sandinista guerrilla holding a handmade bomb. Some sarcastically call it the Museo de las Traiciones (Museum of the Treasons) as a reference to how the Sandinista rank and file has been cheated by Daniel Ortega and the rest of the Sandinista elite.
León used to be the hub of cotton growing but that has declined. The economy is relatively depressed. Tourists are typically not a large, visible presence in León, though it is popular among backpackers and as of late, tour groups. (In comparison to Granada, there are fewer tourists) León still is a university town, filled with students. Backpackers, volunteers and other extranjeros usually meld with local students.León has more colonial churches and cathedrals per capita than any other place in Nicaragua. If you are still on the church tour, there are thirteen to check out in town.

León Cathedral - this is the biggest cathedral in Central America. The story goes that the construction plans sent back to Spain for approval showed smaller dimensions, because they were afraid the Church wouldn't approve such a large cathedral, although this story has been debunked. The cathedral is also the final resting place of Ruben Dario, as well as many other notable Nicaraguans. You can pay a small fee to climb the stairs up to the roof, where you can get a nice view of all of León's churches and the surrounding volcanoes, and you can go into the cellars beneath the cathedral. On the roof you can see close up the giant sculptures holding up the cathedral bells, just don't ring them.
Iglesia de San Juan Bautista de Subtiava - one of the oldest colonial churches in Leon, the church has served a traditionally indigenous community. The rustic wood interior is a pleasant deviance from the often ornate styles that are more typical of the period.
Fundacion Ortiz - is an artistic treasure trove. It has a collection of European masters and a stunning collection of Latin American art.
Centro de Arte Fundación Ortiz Gurdián, This privately supported centre is perhaps the finest art museum in Nicaragua. Showcases both international and Central American artists of various periods and media.

Visita del Leon - Visit of Leon 1/2 (Nicaragua)

12/2023 Nashville to Miami then Managua Nicaragua, drive to Leon, dinner & La Gigantona dance.

#nicaragua #leon #managua #miamiairport #nashville #gigantona #catholic #travelwithrichardandjudy #travel #travelvlog #americanairlines #hugochavez #convent #hilton #embassysuites

Today we make the 3 hour drive from our home in Carbondale, Illinois to Nashville for an early morning flight to Miami and then on to Managua. We stay at the Hilton embassy suites at the Nashville airport where they have a really nice happy hour with free drinks and lots of snacks and then have a lovely dinner at the Ten Restaurant there. We went to bed around midnight only to get up early around 230 in the morning to head over to the airport for our 530 flight. We find a bar that's open for a drink and meet some interesting folks there before boarding our flight to Miami. We eventually arrive in Managua where Judy's Nicaragua flag dress is a huge hit. At the Managua airport we meet up with our wonderful guide Julio and fantastic driver Jaime from Wild Frontiers who arranged the trip. We drive two and a half hours from Managua to Leon and pass by the Hugo Chavez barrio in Managua. We check in at the beautiful El Convento Hotel which used to be a Catholic nuns convent. We head into town and stop at the San Francisco Church built in 1629 and the Leon Cathedral built in 1747. We grab a coconut sorbet and then have a lovely dinner and enchanted evening at El Sesteo restaurant listening to the thousands of birds roosting in the trees and watching all the local boys doing the traditional dance of the gigantona and the dwarf cabezon. This is a dance performed with a boy inside of a large female doll wearing a colorful long dress designed to represent a tall light skinned rich Spanish woman. There is another dancer with a large dwarf head, el enano cabezon which is designed to represent the local indigenous man who is poor but very intelligent. There is usually one or two boys playing drums and one of the boys tells the story. We visited a street lined with lighted photographs of Sandinista martyrs who died during the revolution of 1979. We then dined alfresco at El Sesteo and were joined at dinner by a stray dog and a boy who we gave our leftovers to. After dinner we headed back to the hotel to get a good night sleep and be ready for our volcano sledding adventure the next day.

Nicaragua Vlog Part 1 | Central America Vlog | Leon | Granada | Vegetarian Backpacker

Hi guys,

Welcome to my channel Vegetarian Backpacker!

I recently went to Nicaragua in Central America. I was super excited for it. It was a list minute plan and I had absolutely no ideas of what to expect in the county and which places to go! I traveled in Nicaragua for a week and this vlog shows my first 2 days there. I visited the cities of Leon and Granada. They are beautiful colonial towns with some amazing architecture featuring cathedrals, churches and bell towers.
Both cities are really close to Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. You can take a 'chicken bus' (Yes, its called that!) from UCA (main bus stop at Managua) to reach these towns.

Hope you guys had fun watching this video! :)
