Franz Josef & Fox Glacier | South Island, New Zealand Vlog 5/5

In this final South Island road trip vlog, we made our way from Wanaka over to Glacier Country in hopes of seeing Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier. The drive there was super awesome as it was raining so gushing waterfalls were in full force all along our route.

Our Airbnb was a private room in Takoha and Simon's home located in Franz Josef Glacier. It's a very short drive to Franz Josef Glacier from their accommodation as well as restaurants, a convenience store and some other local attractions. It's also only a 30 min drive to Fox Glacier too placing it in a great location. Warm, friendly hosts and shared spaces to enjoy with other guests in their lovely home too.

Takoha & Simon's Airbnb

Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are two of the most accessible glaciers around but sadly because of climate change and global warming, they have retreated significantly over the years making it much more difficult to see these incredible natural wonders.

There are still a few ways to see Franz Josef and Fox Glacier though. From Heli-hikes that take you on scenic flights to the glaciers and land on them so you can actually walk on them, to ice-climbs even. These activities are pretty pricey (although special once-in-a-lifetime kind of awesomeness we're sure) but if you don't have the funds to splash out, there are a few free options to see the glaciers too, which is what we did.

Beware the weather can be quite temperamental so it can be sunny then raining the very next moment! It happened to us a few times but thankfully we were able to visit both Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier too over the 3 days we stayed there.

A fantastic spot to see Fox Glacier from a distance that we highly recommend (and was recommended to us) is Peak Viewpoint near Gillespies Beach Rd (a turn from Cook Flat Rd). We had a brilliantly clear day to admire Fox Glacier from afar.

We also did a short walk at Lake Matheson called Jetty Lookout before we went to do the Fox Glacier Valley Walk. On a very still day you can get a brilliant reflection of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman on the glacial lake but unfortunately we didn't have that during the time we visited!

The Fox Glacier Valley walk was a much quicker hike than expected but we preferred the peak viewpoint overall.

We hope you've enjoyed our 5 part South Island, New Zealand road trip vlogs and got some ideas for things to see and do in the South Island of NZ.

Places to visit in South Island New Zealand - Arthurs Pass

Arthurs Pass, South Island New Zealand

One of the many great passes in the South Island of New Zealand. Amazing scenery as you drive along this road. Waterfalls, wildlife, snowy capped mountains, rivers, bouldering, hiking, and plenty of places to pull over and take some photos! Arthurs Pass really is much more than a road from A to B. Make sure you allocate a couple of days to travel through the Pass. You can stay overnight at Lake Pearson on the way. Christchurch & The Great Alpine Highway (Arthur's Pass) South Island New Zealand Road Trip Vlog 1/4

The South Island of New Zealand is an incredibly scenic, stunning and beautiful place. We flew from Auckland to Christchurch, rented a car then did a big loop around the upper half of the South Island. This is the first of four vlogs from our latest NZ road trip.

Our Airbnb was conveniently located just 5 minutes from Christchurch airport. A very clean, compact and cosy studio. Perfect for an overnight stay. Maurice was a warm and welcoming host. We ended up staying at the same accommodation for the final night of our trip too.

Maurice's Airbnb

We had dinner at New Zealand's only Burmese restaurant Rangoon Ruby. An absolutely delicious 10/10 meal. We loved every single dish we ordered.

Rangoon Ruby
Address: 819 Colombo Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8013
Hours: Mon–Sat 5:30–9:30pm
Sun Closed

The next morning we travelled from Christchurch to Greymouth along the Great Alpine Highway and through Arthur's Pass. The Great Alpine Highway is a stretch of road that connects Christchurch to the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Along the way we stopped at the following places:

1. Castle Hill (Tip: when using Google Maps, enter Kura Tawhiti Access Track to get you to the carpark and start of the walking track)
2. Arthur's Pass Scenic Lookout
3. Devils Punchbowl Waterfall
4. Otira Viaduct Lookout (where we saw tons of kea right at the end of the video)

Stunning Arthur's Pass - A Scenic Journey Across New Zealand's Southern Alps

Driving across New Zealand's southern alps through Arthur's Pass is a memorable and rewarding adventure that showcases the beauty and diversity of New Zealand's landscape and culture. It is one of the most stunning drives in New Zealand, and a must-do for anyone who loves nature and road trips.

Arthur's Pass is a mountain pass at an elevation of 739m (2,425ft) above the sea level, located on the boundary between the West Coast and Canterbury regions, in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the highest and most spectacular pass across the Southern Alps, and a popular base for exploring Arthur's Pass National Park.

The road to the summit is the iconic Great Alpine Highway, officially known as State Highway 73 ('SH 73') and also known as West Coast Road. It is a piece of extreme engineering involving viaducts, bridges, rock shelters and waterfalls redirected into chutes. The road is fully paved, but it can be challenging to drive, especially in winter, when snow and ice may cover the road and chains are recommended at times. The road is very steep, with sections up to 16 per cent in gradient.

The drive offers amazing views of mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and wildlife, as well as opportunities to stop and explore the natural and cultural attractions along the way. Some of the highlights including Otira Viaduct lookout, a place to admire the 440 meter-long feat of engineering that makes this road trip possible, as well as the gateway to the West Coast.

The drive from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass Village takes about two hours, and the drive from Arthur's Pass Village to the West Coast takes about an hour and a half.

Arthur's Pass, New Zealand

At the very heart of the South Island, between the West Coast and Canterbury, is Arthur's Pass National Park. Covering over 1,000 square kilometres, it's a park of two halves, with heavy rainforest and formidable gorges to the west, and more accessible valleys, tracks and broad river beds to the east.

New Zealand-Arthurs Pass to Fox Glacier Part 7

Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries.
See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!

Fox Glacier:
The Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe in Māori) is a 13 km (8.1 mi) long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It was named in 1872 after a visit by the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir William Fox. Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier falls 2,600 m (8,500 ft) on its 13 km journey from the Southern Alps down to the coast, with it having the distinction of being one of the few glaciers to end among lush rainforest only 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. Although retreating throughout most of the last 100 years, it has been advancing since 1985. In 2006 the average rate of advance was about a metre a week. In January 2009, the terminal face of the glacier was still advancing and had vertical or overhanging faces which were continually collapsing.
Like the nearby Franz Josef Glacier, it is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world, with its terminal face an easy walk from Fox Glacier village/Weheka. It is a major tourist attraction and about 1000 people daily visit it during high tourist season.Though people are told not to, some go beyond the barriers and climb without guides onto the glacier, whose rapid advance creates dangers of sudden ice and rockfalls.Fox Glacier township/Weheka, 6 km away from the glacier, functions mainly as a service centre for tourists, though it also services the local farming community, which had been its main focus until the 1990s (though tourism started as early as the late 1920s). The approximate township site had been gazetted as early as 1866. Bruce Bay is 46 km to the south-west of the township, and Franz Josef is 23 km north-east. State Highway 6 runs through the town. The outflow of the glacier forms the Fox River. During the last ice age, its ice reached beyond the present coastline, and the glacier left behind many moraines during its retreat. Lake Matheson formed as a kettle lake within one of these.Wikipedia

Arthur's Pass, New Zealand HD

Arthur’s Pass is one of the most picturesque and beautiful areas of New Zealand, drawing thousands of tourists each year.

Arthur’s Pass is one of the only three roadways to cross over the Southern Alps of New Zealand, and is now considered to be an impressive feat of engineering, crossing enumerable streams, rivers and mountainous peaks.

Arthur’s Pass is also home to Castle Hill, and awe-inspiring range of rocks and cliffs, reputedly called the “spiritual centre of the universe” by the Dalai Lama. Castle Hill is also a world-renowned area among rock climbers, offering an almost endless supply of bouldering, and several highly praised sports climbing routes.

The aerial footage of Arthur’s Pass and Castle Hill was shot with a DJI Phantom 2 with a Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal, on a GoPro 4 Silver, with custom FPV gear.

The video was made possible thanks to the technical and creative support of Abaconda Management Group ( and the Tauranga office of AMG Immigration (

NZ 2019 Road Trip - Fox Glacier to Hokitika, Including Fox Glacier Helicopter Experience - 4K

Fox and Franz Josef glaciers feature on the “to do” list for many of New Zealand’s South Island visitors. Fox Glacier/Te Moeka o Tuawe is a 13-kilometre-long temperate maritime glacier located on South Island’s West Coast, it was named in 1872 after a visit by the Prime Minister of the day “Sir William Fox”. Today it is also known by its Maori name “Te Moeka o Tuawe”. Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier descends 2,600 metres on its 13 kilometer journey from the Southern Alps towards the coast, after 100 years in retreat, it advanced by up to a metre a week between 1985 and 2009, since then it has been in retreat.
In this video we take a helicopter ride up to the ice fields at the head of the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, for a walk on the hard packed snow, followed by a drive through the temperate rain forests to Hokitika, stopping off along the way to get an impression of how hard life was for the early settlers. Finally we take a look at the quirky drift wood art on Hokitika Beach.

Footnote - A false Copyright claim by Universal Music Polska
My aim is to try to post one video a week, currently I am posting a series showing my recent tour of New Zealand. I have posted this video now even though any advertising revenue it raises is currently being claimed Universal Music Polska, regardless of the fact that they had nothing to do with the making or editing of it. Universal Music Polska claim that the sound track between 40:07 and 41:01 is - A Due for Rhodes Piano and String Orchestra Piotr Orzechowski, AUKSO Orchestra, Marek Mos
Clearly this is a mistake as the soundtrack is simply the sound of waves crashing on the seashore.

If this video is not posted at this time the series will no longer be in order.

Exploring New Zealand #9: Travelling From Christchurch to Fox Glacier By Bus

Our time in Christchurch was nice but now it is time to keep moving, this time by bus. It takes almost the whole day to go by bus (or even train) from Christchurch to the glaciers in the West Coast of New Zealand, via Greymouth. We were going to Fox Glacier to do the Fof-trot walk with the guys from Fox Glacier gliding. We stayed in Fox township, at the Ivory Towers Hotel backpacker. The best part of the trip was the scenery, specially crossing the Arthur Pass.

In the next movie I show Fox Glacier itself.

4K Arthur's Pass - Castle Hill - Lake Lyndon NEW ZEALAND ニュージーランド 紐西蘭 Part 42

Arthur's Pass is the highest pass in the Southern Alps. Long before western explorers, Māori groups used the pass as an east-west link.
Just 115 km from Christchurch city right beside State Highway 73 you will find Lake Grasmere. Lake Grasmere is a small clear water lake holding both rainbow trout and brown trout. The majority of the lake has either boggy or steep bush clad sides (still accessible on foot) however the northeast side has a wide dry grassy bank.
Castle Hill is a location and a high country station in New Zealand's South Island. It is located at an altitude of 700 metres, close to State Highway 73 between Darfield and Arthur's Pass. It is private property and located within the Kura Tawhiti Conservation Area.
The hill was so named because of the imposing array of limestone boulders in the area reminiscent of an old, run-down stone castle. The front of ChristChurch Cathedral in Christchurch was made from Castle Hill limestone. The station was established by the Porter brothers, and later owned by brothers John and Charles Enys. John Enys was a noted entomologist, and friend of novelist Samuel Butler.
This area has recently seen more visitors, as nearby Flock Hill station was used for the filming of the climactic battle scenes of the 2005 movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Lake Lyndon is a small lake in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is located near Porters Pass on State Highway 73 after Springfield heading into the Southern Alps.

Spring Break Part 2: Arthur's Pass and Fox Glacier

This is video from Mt. Bealy's 800 meter Skree slope Scott and I slid down, and the epic Fox Glacier walk in New Zealand. Fun Stuff. The Skree slope was actually super exciting but my camera died. Scott nearly died. And his memory card and camera also bit the dust, but were thankfully rescued. Crazy stuff....

This was done on I-Movie. Not my favorite, but whatever. Music is Renegades of Funk, and Wizards in Winter- Tran-Siberian Orchestra... A personal favorite
