The Milford Track is one of the Great Walks of New Zealand, located amidst mountains and temperate rain forest in Fiordland National Park in the southwest of the South Island. The 53.5 km (33.2 mi) hike starts at Glade Wharf (accessed by water taxi only) at the head of Lake Te Anau and finishes in Milford Sound at Sandfly Point, traversing rainforests, wetlands, and an alpine pass. It has the reputation as the finest walk in the world and offers unparalleled views of remote areas of Fiordland National Park.

After years of dreaming about it, I finally had the opportunity to conquer the world-renowned Milford Track in New Zealand! Located in Fiordland National Park on the South Island, my friend Dan and I embarked on the four-day trek in December 2022. Initially blessed with good weather, we enjoyed the stunning views of McKinnon's Pass on Day 2. Unfortunately, Day 3 brought a change in conditions, and the rest of our journey was plagued by rain. Despite the weather, we still saw some impressive sights at the end of your trek, including Sutherland Falls; the highest waterfall in New Zealand. The Milford Track remains one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. The natural scenery and landscapes were breathtaking, cementing its reputation as one of the most popular hiking trails in the world!

Milford Track Guided Day Walk
Experience a guided walk to Giants Gate, on the world famous Milford Track, suitable for all abilities. Departing from Milford Sound we begin with a short boat ride to Sandfly Point.
The walk meanders alongside the cascading Arthur River through lush rainforest to Giants Gate. This spectacular waterfall is best viewed from the large swing bridge spanning the river.

The Milford Track, Fjordlands National Park, New Zealand
In 1888 Quinton Mackinnon surveyed an iverland route to connect Lake Te Anau and Milford Sound. The 33.5 mile long track is now, and perhaps has always been, an iconic hike in New Zealand. Today it is an exceptionally well maintained and managed trail. While no doubt much tougher back in Mackinnon's day I'm confident those trekkers found as much to enjoy as we did. We hike the Milford Track over 3 nights. While you can do it as an independent walker we travelled in the care of Ultimate Hikes who did a splendid job.
