In this video Sarah and I escape Sydney just before Covid lockdown to experiment life living in a van.
We travel around parts of the South Island with no real plan.
We visited Wanaka, Twizel, Mt Cook, Lake Tekapo, Alexandra, Gore, Te Anau, Milford Sound, and Queenstown. My favourite parts of this trip are our hike to Roys Peak, our helicopter flight over Mt Cook, and the cruise through Milford Sound. Oh and the Luge in Queenstown is rad!

Today we're in Nelson to collect our campervan hire from Motorhome Republic. It's a 2018, 4-6 berth Fiat Ducato Imala and will be our home, car, kitchen and toilet for a lot of our road trip over the remaining episodes of Season 2 Reveal NZ.
When it came campervan hire in NZ we had a bit of a plan already — on our last road trip we spotted these premium looking motorhomes around the campsites and knew that we wanted to check one out the next time we picked up a rental! Beyond glad that we did, it's incredibly comfortable, handles well, has lots of space and plenty of technology as well. In the next video we upload we will take you through a detailed tour of the inside and outside to show what a $150,000 campervan looks like to go vanlife in!
Our road trip begins from Nelson, making our way out to Marlborough, parking up for a bit as we explore into the Marlborough Sounds and then cruise down the east coast of the South Island, New Zealand.

New Zealand's South Island by campervan - 2020
We got stuck in our own country because of the COVID-19 border restrictions. In response, Tourism Holdings Limited offered all of their camper vans to hire at a cut rate to help kick start the domestic tourism industry. So we got a 6 berth Britz.
We took the fam on an epic two week tour of the lower half of New Zealand's South Island. If you're a kiwi, planning to do this in your own country, this might give you some ideas. If you're a tourist looking to travel NZ by camper van after our borders open again, this will helpful for you too. AND if you have kids and you want to travel, this is the thing to watch!

Family NZ South Island RV Road Trip

New Zealand South Island | 10 Day Road Trip Itinerary
I travelled the South Island, New Zealand back in August 2019, and its only now (7th April 2021) that I'm finally uploading this video.
Take note, I may look younger in this video as I made the 'talking head' part of the video over a year ago too.
I'm very aware that New Zealand is still a difficult country to enter with its restrictions on entry during the pandemic, but I hope this video will give people planning a trip to New Zealand for the future some ideas.

New Zealand South Island 15-day Campervan Road Trip
This was our first campervan road trip around New Zealand’s South Island, covering the major spots along the west coast and central south island. We took 15 days and travelled over 2,300km (1,430 miles) to cover Christchurch, Arthur's Pass, Franz Josef, Haast, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Mt Cook, Lake Tekapo and Geraldine.
The weather was great and we were lucky to miss the floods along the west coast that occured in early Dec 2019.
Day 1: Christchurch - Collect campervan.
Day 2: Arthur’s Pass. Castle Hill. Devil’s Punchbowl. Hokitika beach.
Day 3: Franz Josef Glacier. Hot Pools.
Day 4: Lake Matheson. Ship Creek. Haast Pass. Thundercreek Falls. Fantail Falls. The Neck.
Day 5: Wanaka SkyDive. Puzzling World. Lavender Farm.
Day 6: Roy’s Peak.
Day 7: Glenorchy Animal Experience. Te Anau.
Day 8: Milford Sound Cruise and Kayak. Underwater observatory. Eglinton Valley.
Day 9: Queenstown Fergburger. Skyline. Luge. Canyoning.
Day 10: Lindis Pass. High Country Salmon Farm. Twizel.

Living the Van Life: 12 Days of Campervan Adventures in South Island, New Zealand
We recently went on an amazing adventure and wanted to share some valuable lessons we learned along the way. Whether you're planning a road trip or renting an RV, these tips will come in handy.
1. First things first, get familiar with your vehicle. It's important to know how to drive it safely and make the most of its features. And here's a little secret - RV centres often have free leftover supplies like kitchen and pantry items. Take what you need, but remember to be considerate of others.
2. Next, make sure to download an app that shows you everything from camp sites to dump sites, laundromats, and gas stations. It's also a good idea to have offline maps since reception can be spotty in some areas.
3. Flexibility is key. Plan your itinerary based on the weather and your personal situation. And when you're on the road, drive according to the conditions.
4. Taking care of your RV is important too. Empty the grey water and fill up the water tank daily when you can. We found that tidying up the van at the start of the day is a great habit to have. And when you're staying at a paid camp site, make use of the facilities like toilets, showers, and kitchens. It's all included in the price!
5. Remember to enjoy the journey! Take breaks whenever you want to admire the surroundings and rest when you're tired from driving.
Now, let's talk about budget. For our 12-day trip, here's how much we spent in New Zealand dollars:
1. Campervan hire, including RUC: $2,900
2. Diesel: $350
3. LPG: $45
4. Campsite fees: $450
5. Food, groceries & Misc: $950
Of course, your expenses may vary depending on your budget and destination. In our case, we focused on hiking, so we didn't spend much on attraction fees.
