We are in Te Puke, Tauranga to do some kiwi fruit picking in Te Puke. We join a team of kiwifruit pickers from our hostel, Pacific Coast Lodge, for some kiwifruit picking in Tauranga. My Kiwi Fruits Experience in New Zealand
Worked at the kiwi orchard in Opotiki for Kiwi Thinning, Tipping, Cutting, Summer Pruning. After one and the half month, I joined Kiwi Packhouse in Te Puke.
I worked as Grader in Trevelyan's, and my boyfriend worked as Labeller. The packhouse is very clean and they are very concern about the fruit quality, as well as the work quality.
As I need more money, I changed from day shift Trevelyan's to night shift Seeka Oakside. (Seeka provide longer working hour). This time I am the packer, sometimes grading supervisor will need me if the grower's fruit quality are not up to the standard. My boyfriend became the autopacking machine guard, the boxes stuck in the machine quite often and need someone to reload, this is the easiest job in Seeka that i knew so far =_=
This will be the unforgettable memories for me in New Zealand.

The job is hard, 10 hours a day for 7 days a week, but it feels like walking meditation, the mind can wander around and the nature helps to feel connected to something bigger. This is a short video to give you the feeling we have waking up every day at 6.30 and trying to get the most of it.

In driving around under level 3 lockdown we have seen so many Kiwi farms. They are everywhere, but all of the tours were closed for the lockdown. As soon as we moved to level 2, I made a call and signed us up.
Facts about Kiwis:
- in New Zealand, “Kiwis” refers to the people of New Zealand;
- The name derives from the Kiwi bird, but during the First World War, the New Zealanders became endearingly known as “Kiwis”;
- Kiwi fruit actually is rebranded Chinese Gooseberry or Mihoutao (something like macaque (monkey) fruit;
- Kiwifruit came to New Zealand in 1904 and has changed quite a bit in a hundred years;
- Some importers of the fruit in 1959 told the Kiwi farmers that the fruit needed a rebrand to avoid the negative connotations associated with “gooseberries”; instead of “melonette” (the other option), they went with Kiwifruit;
- There are currently three colours of Kiwifruit: green, yellow, and red (very recent);
- There are male and female trees;
- The orchard is arranged in a 1:4 male to female ratio;
- Only females produce fruit;
- Kiwifruit flowers don’t produce nectar, so the farmers bring in bees and then use a Stinging Nettle mixture to trick the bees into thinking that their pollinating activites are actually productive;
- the current size of the fruit is much larger than it was originally;
- This is currently harvest season and hundreds of migrant workers come to NZ to pick kiwifruit - under COVID, many more domestic workers harvested kiwifruit when they were laid off otherwise;
- There is a ton of wasted fruit and a lot of culling to get at the most aesthetically pleasing fruit;
- Once picked they are placed into large crates, then taken to a sorting and packaging factory;
- As they are sorted they get photographed a dozen times and scanned, then culled for irregularities. Only the best kiwifruits are shipped overseas. The New Zealanders get the rejects;
- Different markets prefer different levels of sweetness in their kiwis. Canada is in the middle, whereas the UK and Europe get the most tart and Asia gets the sweetest; and
- In Japan, people will pay $35NZD for a single kiwifruit that is exceptionally large and sweet.
We picked green kiwifruit, then sampled golden kiwifruit and red kiwifruit. We also saw an avacodo tree that produced 1000-1500 avocados every year!
