Passenger Ferry Caught in Massive Waves

Watch horrible waves smashing against the Interislander Ferry at the coast of Wellington, New Zealand. The ship faces storm and winds of more than 100 km/h, and meter high waves. Not a nice day to go for a trip for sure.

What's it like to take New Zealand's WORLD FAMOUS Ferry?

Watch this New Zealand Travel Guide to get a sense of what it’s like to travel the 58 miles over three+ hours from New Zealand’s South Island to the North Island in the comfort of New Zealand’s Interislander Ferry, the Kaitaki..

Join us as we travel across the Cook Strait from the Picton at the top of the South Island to New Zealand’s bustling capital of Wellington on the North Island aboard the Kaitaki ferry!

This is only the second time we’ve made a video highlighting a ferry and it was incredible!

Kiwirail runs this ferry as part of its Great Journeys of New Zealand brand, which is an apt name. They also run the TranzAlpine, Coastal Pacific, and Great Northern trains. The schedules line up to make it possible to travel by rail and ferry all the way from Christchurch to Auckland and back using these services.

We splurged for the lounge access to make this a luxury travel experience. That means you get to see the Kaitaki Plus Lounge where we indulged in the range of food and drinks they make available. You’ll have to be the judge of whether it’s worth the increased price for you. For the latest pricing and schedules, check out this website:

You’ll also see the other amenities onboard, including the restaurants, bars, food, and drinks.

-- About this video --

Today we are leaving Wellington and the North Island and heading to the South Island on the Cook Strait Ferry between Wellington and Picton! It’s time for the New Zealand ferry crossing!

We take an early morning sailing from Wellington with Interislander. We check into the Interislander Ferry, park up and start exploring the Interislander ferry for the New Zealand ferry crossing.

We choose one of the multiple viewing decks to watch Wellington turn into a tiny dot in the distance. Then we are on the Cook Strait – the body of water between the North Island and South Island.

After checking out The Bridge with Interislander – something you have to be invited to do (it’s not included in a ferry ticket) – we head back onto the viewing deck as we enter the stunning Marlborough Sounds as part of the ferry between Wellington and Picton.

This is the highlight of the Cook Strait Ferry between the North Island and South Island with some incredible views.

The North Island to South Island ferry arrives in Picton where we can officially say we have reached the South Island! We relax on the Picton Waterfront and enjoy the relaxed pace of life here in Picton.

So what do you think of the New Zealand ferry crossing? Would you take the ferry between Wellington and Picton?

New Zealand Ferry Crossing / North to South Island / Wellington to Picton

Our New Zealand travels continue as we take the Interislander ferry and cross the Cook Strait from the north island to the south island. The ferry boat leaves from Wellington and takes around four hours to arrive in Picton.

We dropped the hire car off at the rentals near the ferry port, took the ferry as foot passengers and then hired a new vehicle once in Picton on the South Island. Easiest way and we had no hassles!

We then drove to our next destination, Kaiteriteri, a beautiful beach resort, where we got to relax and enjoy our new apartment, our accommodation for the next two nights!

THIS WAS FILMED DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY 2020, PART OF OUR MONTH LONG NEW ZEALAND ROAD TRIP. THANKS FOR ALL THE PREVIOUS KIND COMMENTS, WE ARE SAFE AT HOME.

Taking The Ferry From Wellington To Picton | Reveal NZ Ep.11

Reveal New Zealand Ep.11 and we're taking a Bluebridge ferry from Wellington to Picton. The ferry connects the North Island and South Island as we cross the Cook Strait to head towards...⬇ More Below ✈ Our 220 page guide on how to generate income online and travel non-stop (when we can again)

After 10 episodes filmed from the North Island, today we're taking the ferry from Wellington to Picton and driving Aston (our 7.2m campervan) onboard a Bluebridge ferry. It takes about 3 hours to cross the Cook Strait, travelling about 90km to connect up the North Island to the South Island.

Blue Bridge have a ferry that goes in both directions, either Wellington to Picton or Picton to Wellington. We're obviously going North Island to South Island today and won't need the return trip because we're going to fly back from Queenstown.

So how is it taking a campervan onboard the ferry? Honestly, ridiculously easy. The process was so streamlined, there's announcements to keep you up to date on what's going on and the views arriving into Picton through the Queen Charlotte Sounds are outrageous!

Reveal NZ is a 20+ part video series, so make sure you're subscribed to follow along with all episodes here: More than just taking a motorhome around New Zealand, it's about how to travel New Zealand, the top tourist spots, the hidden local gems, incredible day trips, extreme activities, amazing accommodation and a spot of wining and dining... It's about making you feel like you're along for the travels with us, so grab a drink of your poison, sit back and get ready for 5 weeks driving in a campervan hire from Auckland to The Catlins.

Interislander Kaitaki in rough seas, NZ

29 May 2010, 2.15pm : High winds and salt spray from the 7th level of New Zealand's largest ferry - the 32,000 horsepower Kaitaki - as it plows through the turbulent Cook Straits towards Wellington.

Not exactly what I would call picturesque!

Up the volume to experience the full might of the Roaring Forties. Recorded on Panasonic LX3

Bluebridge Ferry crossing | Scenes of New Zealand

R and D Adventures are embarking on a South Island trip. This episode is of the ferry crossing on the Bluebridge Ferry.

New Zealand - Cook Strait Ferry Crossing

Unless you fly, there are only two ways to cross the Cook Strait - swim (not recommended) or take the Inter Island Ferry. A relaxing 3-hour transit - even time for cocktails.

Interislander ferry crossing - Wellington to Picton NZ

Some scenes and details about our Interislander ferry crossing that we took from Wellington (North Island) to Picton (South Island) New Zealand, across Cook Strait and through the Marlborough Sounds.

Details about the trip:
- The distance travelled on the water was 92 kms
- It takes about 3 hours
- There are multiple ferry crossings every day
- I would recommend early bookings as they seem to sell out or tickets at certain times
- Interislander ferries include: Arahura, Aratere and Kaitaki
- The ferries can accommodate passengers and vehicles (including cars and trucks)
- Ferry services include - canteen, Wi-Fi internet connection, Cinema - if you pay extra
- We took a large pram (for a toddler) on board the ferry, and found it very manageable. We could not get the pram out on to the outer deck, but otherwise access was totally ok (they had ramps, lifts, etc.). Just remember to put your brake on the pram, or it might roll away with the movement of the ferry.
- There was a kid's (children's) play area
- There was a tourist shop for people wanting to remember cruising on the Interislander
- Arrangements can be made to transport pets
- There was even a parents' feeding room with some cots in it - if you needed to put your baby down for a sleep or for privacy during the cruise
- I have heard recently that on one of the ferries, you can even rent a room to sleep in for the trip
- The waves can get choppy, and at times the seas can be rough (but I have never gotten seriously sea sick going on the trip)
- There are luggage limits, and you can check in bags
- Some rental car companies (e.g. Hertz) don't let you take your can from one island to the other. You will have to return it to the hire car company at the terminal, and then pick up another one when you arrive at the other end of the journey. This will probably actually save you $$, but will just take a little time to hand in/pick up the new car.
- The trip can be quite pretty especially if it is good weather. The passage through the sounds is best experienced out on the deck and involved some beautiful scenery as you pass by. I would recommend this especially if you are feeling sea sick.

The above info is only from my experience/memory of the trip, and is intended to be a helpful guide only, and may now be inaccurate. For exact details and bookings visit the New Zealand Interislander website (as the above details may change) -
