Authentic Overnight Village Trek | Luang Prabang, Laos
Today is day 2 for us in Luang Prabang and we will be starting an overnight village trek around this area.
This is something we have really wanted to do since coming to Southeast Asia. We had looked at doing a multi day trek in other countries but could never find one that felt truly authentic. We did a lot of research on treks in Northern Laos and found White Elephant Adventures. They offered many different tour options and we choose to do the 2 day village trek based on the amount of time we have left here in Luang Prabang.
Day 1
We pack up our stuff, check out of our guesthouse and head to the White Elephant Adventures office first thing in the morning. We drop our bags except the 2 backpacks we will be taking on the hike. We meet our guide and the 1 other trekker in our group and off we go!
We drive about 2 hours outside of Luang Prabang through the countryside and pass several villages along the Nam Xuang river. We get dropped off and walk through a small village to the river. We cross the Nam Xuang river by a small local boat and begin our trek from the river’s banks on the opposite side.
Today we hike around 10 KMs/ 5 hours through the jungle and some beautiful farm land.
We make it to the village where we will be staying the night and drop off our things. Our Homestay is very busy with a whole group of school kids helping to build a trailer. While we watch the construction, our Homestay host challenges us to a game of Bocce ball.
After losing 2 games to 1, we take a walk around the village and get to see the school, the community well, and a family busy building a new fence from bamboo strips.
After dinner, we are off to bed.. we share the floor in the family home under our own mosquito net and enjoy the sounds of the farm animals through the night.
Day 2
On the second day we wake up, get packed and have breakfast. We say our goodbyes to our gracious homestay hosts and get back on the trail.
We trek for around 5 hours and take in more of the countryside. We visit a couple of villages along the way and stop where our guide's uncle lives.
We sit and chat with the family and one of the family members asks to see our drone (translated through our guide :)). Myles flies the drone and kids from all around the village come to check it out. It is really cool to see how interested all the children were to see the drone.
We continue on our way and finally, our trek comes to an end at the Nam Pa River. We take a quick and refreshing swim before we get picked up and drive 1 hour back to Luang Prabang.
We had a very unique and memorable trip in the countryside and remote villages of Northern Laos. The experience was exactly what we were looking for.. we did not see any other tourists on the trail or in the villages. We wanted an authentic village trek and that was exactly what we got. This was the perfect way to end our 3 weeks in this amazing country!

Last year due to the pandemic Pi Mai was canceled but this year it's been allowed with restrictions in place. This is my first time to see the Pi Mai celebrations in Laos and I am very excited.
Although, the celebrations that will take place over the next 3 days is nothing compared to usual massive celebrations that take place annually. Nevertheless, it was still a sight to see!
