New Roseau, Dominica Scenic Driving Before Category 5 Hurricane Maria

Sharing new Roseau, Dominica scenic driving before Category 5 Hurricane Maria hit the Island Nation. It's been exactly 2 years since this disaster and I hope recovery has been going well. This particular video is recorded about 4.5 months before Maria and contains the rest of the amazing views from Morne Bruce, Roseau all the way to Emerald Pool Waterfalls including the botanical gardens of Roseau. This video also contains scenes from the rainforests of Dominica.

The photos from Morne Bruce Viewpoint of Roseau with Royal Caribbean Serenade of the Seas at the port was captured with my SONY Alpha 65 with 8mm lens. The camera is 24 Mp luckily had plenty pixels to zoom in...

According to Wikipedia

Hurricane Maria was a deadly Category 5 hurricane that devastated Dominica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico in September 2017. It is regarded as the worst natural disaster in recorded history to affect those islands and was also the deadliest Atlantic hurricane since Mitch in 1998. The tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record and the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2017, Maria was the thirteenth named storm, eighth consecutive hurricane, fourth major hurricane, second Category 5 hurricane, and deadliest storm of the hyperactive 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. At its peak, the hurricane caused catastrophic destruction and numerous fatalities across the northeastern Caribbean, compounding recovery efforts in the areas of the Leeward Islands already struck by Hurricane Irma. Total losses from the hurricane are estimated at upwards of $91.61 billion (2017 USD), mostly in Puerto Rico, ranking it as the third-costliest tropical cyclone on record.

Dominica (/ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/ DOM-ih-NEE-kə; French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the West Indies.[9] The capital, Roseau, is located on the western side of the island. It is part of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island is located near Guadeloupe to the northwest and Martinique to the south-southeast. Its area is 750 km2 (290 sq mi), and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 m (4,747 ft) in elevation. The population was 71,293 at the 2011 census.

The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago. Columbus is said to have passed the island on Sunday 3 November 1493, and the island's name is derived from the Latin for Sunday. It was later colonised by Europeans, predominantly by the French from the 1690s to 1763. Great Britain took possession in 1763 after the Seven Years' War, and it gradually established English as its official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.

Dominica has been nicknamed the Nature Isle of the Caribbean for its natural environment.[9] It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, called Boiling Lake. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The Sisserou parrot, also known as the imperial amazon and found only on Dominica, is the island's national bird and featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy depends on tourism and agriculture.

Hurricane Maria, enormous damage in Dominica ,floods and collapsed houses in RoseauDominica[edit]
Rainfall ahead of the hurricane caused several landslides in Dominica as water levels across the island began to rise by the afternoon of September 18.[23] At 21:35 ATS that day (1:35 UTC, September 19), the core of Maria moved directly over Dominica with wind speeds of 160 mph (260 km/h), or Category 5 intensity. The extreme winds blew the roofs off many houses, including the official residence of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who required rescue when his home began to flood.[24] Reports from Roseau indicate total devastation, with half the village flooded, cars stranded, and stretches of residential area flattened.[25][26] Most of the island was left without cellular, radio, or internet service. Skerrit called the devastation mind boggling and indicated immediate priority was to rescue survivors rather than assess damage.[27] As of September 19, according to an update from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), there have been 6 deaths on Dominica as a result of the hurricane, based on preliminary information.[21]

Dominica is mostly volcanic and has few beaches; therefore, tourism has developed more slowly than on neighboring islands. Nevertheless, Dominica's mountains, rainforests, freshwater lakes, hot springs, waterfalls, and diving spots make it an attractive ecotourism destination. Cruise ship stopovers have increased following the development of modern docking and waterfront facilities in Roseau, the capital. Out of 22 Caribbean islands tracked, Dominica had the fewest visitors in 2008 (55,800 or 0.3% of the total). This was about half as many as visited Haiti. The volcanic nature of the island has attracted scuba divers.

Dominica has two major newspapers, The Sun and The Chronicle. There are two national television stations and a few radio stations, ZBC-AM 590, En Ba Mango 93.5/96.9FM, ZGBC-AM 740, ZGBC-FM 90.7 (Portsmouth), ZGBC-FM 102.1 (Roseau) and ZGBC-FM 106.1 (Marigot), Q95 FM, the Dominica Broadcasting Corporation, LIME and Digicel compete for most of Dominica's wireless customers.

Dominica - Three Years After Hurricane Maria. Journey in 4K

Today, on 18th of September 2020, on third anniversary of Hurricane Maria striking Dominica, I share with you this video, full of footage never seen before. Lots of this footage is my personal, showing damage to our home at the time, and of us salvaging our stuff, and cutting a path through fallen forest to our neighbours. Well, it is time to share it all.

I noticed, that busy with everyday life, we tend to forget noticing how far we progressed through just three short years. I do hope this video will show it to you, and - if you watch from abroad and did not experience this hurricane - it will also give you a better idea what we all went through.

Lots of it is filmed in 4K, but some shots are shaky, from a small hand-held camera. I hope it is ok, as it adds authentic feel to it, and not always I had a chance to film well at these moments.

If you like it - please SHARE it with friends, and SUBSCRIBE for more videos. Such important moments in life deserve being seen and shared, I believe.
Thank you for watching, I hope I won't have a chance of filming anything like that again. Still - I am ready, if so.

(Video received an award at Tagore International Film Festival 2020 in India, and is shortlisted for Southampton Short Film Week 2020 in UK).

Explore Dominica in the Caribbean - Unravel Travel TV

The island sits midway along the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, just a few miles from Martinique to the south and Guadeloupe to the north. Its official name is the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is mostly referenced in official communiqués and to distinguish the island from its northerly Caribbean sister, the Dominican Republic.

Known as The Nature Island, Dominica's tropical rainforests cover two thirds of the island, and are home to 1,200 plant species. Rivers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls abound, fed by the island's high annual rainfall. Its volcanic physique points to extensive geothermal activity -- even underwater. The Morne Trois Pitons National Park was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the eastern Caribbean.

The island is sparsely populated with 70,000 people inhabiting its 289 square miles. A significant portion of the population lives in and around the capital city of Roseau. About 80% of the population is Roman Catholic. English is the official language, spoken with a melodic French lilt, but a large portion of the population speaks Kwèyòl (Creole), and a few northern villages speak Kokoy.

Dominica offers much more than a stunning nature adventure. Its rich culture is a blend of English, French, African, and Carib peoples. Colorful costumes, music, and pageantry are on display at a host of celebrations, from Carnival to the World Creole Music Festival, and the many independence celebrations around the island. Though Dominica received its independence from Britain on November 3rd 1978, the country commemorates this date with an extended period of cultural celebrations which can last as long as four weeks.

Dominica boasts wonderful examples of Caribbean architecture with a distinctive mix of French, English and Spanish influences. Monumental buildings from colonial times, as well as some old plantation estates, are a must see. A self-guided walking tour through historic Roseau, from the Society for Architectural Preservation and Enhancement (SHAPE) office in Roseau, allows you to experience the rich history and architecture of the capital city.

Dominica is the only Caribbean island with a remaining population of pre-Columbian Carib Indians. Migrating in waves from South America as early as 3,000 B.C., various tribes made Dominica their home, and by 1,000 A.D. were well settled, calling the island Wai'tukubuli meaning 'tall is her body' in the Kalinago language. Today, over 2,000 Caribs, properly known as the Kalinago, inhabit a 3,700 acre territory on the northwestern side of the island.

Dominica is served by two airports: Melville Hall (DOM) and Canefield (DCF) Airport. Most visitors to Dominica will arrive through Melville Hall as it is the larger of the two airports and accommodates commercial airlines. Canefield Airport, 15 minutes from the capital city of Roseau, is only 3,100 ft long and serves only smaller aircraft offering intra-regional flights and courier services. Melville Hall, located in the northeastern side of the island, one hour and 20 minutes from the city, features a longer runway and updated terminal.

International flights from US and Europe are connected to the island through hubs in Antigua, Barbados, St. Maarten, Guadeloupe and Martinique. Leeward Island Air Transport (LIAT) usually completes the Dominican leg of these flights and BVI Airways provides service from St. Maarten. LIAT and American Eagle also provide connecting flights to the island out of Puerto Rico.
