NEW MEXICO: a SCENIC motorcycle roadtrip from Chama to Taos and Eagle Nest

Welcome to New Mexico, welcome to “the Land of Enchantment.” Travel on some of the most beautiful roads from Colorado all the way through New Mexico to Texas with me and visit majestic mountain tops, the artistic town Taos, and one of the most famous churches of the area.

The ride took me from Durango through parts of the San Juan National forest to Pagosa Springs and to New Mexico. Here are the best roads to ride and places to visit in Northern New Mexico:

00:00 Drive over Colorado's beautiful roads to New Mexico
03:16 From Chama follow Highway 64 to Tierra Amarilla and from there to Tres Piedras, it is one of the most beautiful rides of New Mexico.
03:59 US 64 climbs the back side of the monumental Brazos Cliff , entering into the timberland of the Carson National Forest. Be on the lookout because of the large Elk population as the road winds toward the Tusas Mountain - and make sure to bring enough time to enjoy the amazing views.
05:34 At Tres Piedras, the highway drops into sagebrush mesa before crossing the Río Grande Gorge Bridge—565 feet or 172 meters above the river.
06:22 Visit the Sangre de Cristo Mountains - which is Spanish for Blood of Christ are the southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountains. They are located in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico
07:11 Stay a night in Taos and explore the galleries and arts of the vibrant little town. The best place to stay: Casa Benavides B&B
10:10 Visit Taos Pueblo a UNESCO World Heritage
11:06 To see some other stunning architecture of the area check out San Francisco de Asís Mission Church on the main plaza of Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. It was built between 1772 and 1816, replaced an earlier church in that location, and is the only original church which remains intact in the Taos area.
13:40 Drive the „The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway“ all the way to Eagle Nest Lake State Park

Taos Pueblo Tour and Review, NM | 10K Road Trip Vlog Day 5

This is Day 5 of our 10,000 mile road trip across the US and Canada. We went Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico and then ended the day in Santa Fe.

Check out the blog post of this day for more details and pictures:

---

What's going on here?

We quit our jobs, left New York City, bought a car, and decided to spend the summer driving around the US and Canada. The plan is to hit at least 35 states and 3 provinces and cover more than 10,000 miles. Watch from the beginning here:

Music is royalty free:
Where I am From by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena (YouTube Audio Library)

Filmed on June 2, 2017 on a Canon G7X Mark II and Mark I.

---

Our Gear:

Canon G7X Mark II: (it’s amazing and basically sees in the dark)
Canon G7X: (the original is almost as good, but less expensive)
Joby Gorillapod: (fantastic versatile bendy tripod – this is the slightly smaller “action” version that’s easier to travel with and comes with a mount for a camera and a gopro)
Macbook Air: (we edit everything on Final Cut Pro on a Macbook Air, which is light and easy to travel with)
External Hard Drive: (the videos are a little too big for the macbook air to handle, so I edit everything off an external hard drive)

The Adventure Continues
Day 5 - Cinco de Mayo in Santa Fe
148 Miles
Santa Rosa to Santa Fe New Mexico via Pecos National Historic Park

First was a stop at Pecos National Historic Park.
Another story of how invaders from Europe resulted in the decimation of the Pecos people. Touring the ruins and learning about the history of Native Americans, Indigenous peoples, were all part of paying respect and never forgetting. There is tragedy that affects all people. Remembering their struggles, simply remembering and never forgetting, is important.
==================================
Day 6 – A Chance Encounter in Taos, NM and Taos Pueblo
355 Miles
Santa Fe, New Mexico to Pagosa Springs, Colorado via Taos, Taos Pueblo, Red River, Eagles Nest, Angel Fire - the Enchanted Loop through Carson National Forest, then Crossed the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

I left Santa Fe to do a loop through Carson Forest, Taos and a few other interesting places, with a stop at Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO site. It’s a very moving and tragic story about the plight of Native American People, which is all too common a theme from history. With stops in Taos, Taos Pueblo, Red River, Eagles Nest, and Angel Fire,
the day was full of timeless moments and spirited riding

MOTORCYCLE RIDE - NEW MEXICO - TURQUOISE TRAIL SCENIC BYWAY

If you've never heard of the Turquoise Trail Scenic Byway then you're in for a real treat - It's another awesome road to ride the motorcycles in New Mexico.

This route can take you between the towns of Albuquerque and Santa Fe or for those more adventurous, try going all the way to Taos.
Starting Point

For us the starting point was Albuquerque.  We headed east out of town on the old Route 66, which is the frontage road that runs parallel to Interstate 40.    The official start of the Turquoise Trail begins in Tijeras where we hopped onto NM-14 at the Cedar Crest exit (Exit 175).  From there the route goes through Cedar Crest, Golden,  Madrid,  Cerrillos and ends at San Marcos/Lone Butte near Santa Fe.

Looping through pinon covered hills and valleys, the Turquoise Trail offers a unique diverse topography as the route carves its way through mountain ranges, rocky outcroppings and mesas.  The trail loops through towns that beckon the rider to stop and do a bit of exploring..... ( find out more at

A Walk Around The Pueblo de Taos, New Mexico

Taos Pueblo (or Pueblo de Taos) is an ancient pueblo belonging to a Taos-speaking Native American tribe of Puebloan people. It lies about 1 mile north of the modern city of Taos, New Mexico. The pueblos are considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. This has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Taos Pueblo is a member of the Eight Northern Pueblos, whose people speak two variants of the Tanoan language. The Taos community is known for being one of the most private, secretive, and conservative pueblos. Natives will almost never speak of their religious customs to outsiders, and because their language has never been written down, much of the culture remains unknown to the rest of the world. A reservation of 95,000 acres (38,000 ha) is attached to the pueblo, and about 4,500 people live in this area.
