Time Lapse Video: Walking the Oasis of the Seas Top to Bottom - Oct. 2014

Sometimes I do strange things like walking an entire cruise ship from top to bottom like I did the Oasis of the Seas. With my GoPro Hero3 Silver edition, a monopod, my Nike+ GPS watch, my Nike sneakers and the Nike dongle, I headed out to see how long it would take to actually walk the entire ship and how far it might be.

Nothing ever goes as plans and I inadvertently had my camera set to take time lapse photographs instead of video. I didn't discover this until I got down to deck 6. This required that I actually redo decks 16 down to deck 6! All of the video was taken with the GoPro but for the zipline and Flowrider, which was taken with my iPhone 4S.

I passed the time counting the Henry vacuums in the hallways by cabins and discovered that blue Henrys were by far more popular than red Henrys and that only one yellow Henry existed on the ship. Overall the experience was fun and I got to see parts of the ship I might not have otherwise seen like the hidden sundeck on deck 14, various fancy suite doors with fancy doorbells, and some of the most recent changes to the Oasis of the Seas after dry dock. Total distance walked was over 4 miles and I ended up with about 75 minutes worth of footage that has been reduced down to 22 minutes total by speeding the footage up.

My goal was to try to walk around the entire length of each deck, which was possible in many but not all of the decks due to the layout of the ship. I ended up walking forward and around and going to the back (aft) of the ship as far as I could before turning and going down the second set of stairs for each deck.

While this was my first transatlantic cruise, it wasn't the first time I was onboard the Oasis. The Oasis of the Seas is an Oasis-class ship owned by Royal Caribbean International. Built by STX Europe in Turku, Finland, she was delivered to Royal Caribbean in 2009. The largest cruise ship ever built, she comes in at just over 225,000 GT and measures 1,186.5 ft in length and 236 ft above the water line. She can carry 5,400 passengers at double capacity and up to 6,296 passengers at maximum capacity. That doesn't include the nearly 2,500 crew members she carries to accommodate all of those passengers. I was pleased to board the ship in April 2010, a mere five months after her maiden voyage. In 2011, Royal Caribbean added the DreamWorks experience to the Oasis of the Seas along with other ships in the fleet. The appeal of this ship, besides the fact that both the Oasis and the Allure of the Seas are the largest ships in the world, are the neighborhoods that invite you to participate and stay active and engaged while onboard. These include Central Park, The Pool and Sports Zone, the Royal Promenade, and Boardwalk among others.

In September 2014 the Oasis of the Seas made her way across the Atlantic where she did a few short cruises before heading to Rotterdam for her two week dry dock stay. During this time they retrofitted the ship to accommodate the cruise line's dining concept change called, Dynamic Dining.
*The main dining room was divided into three distinct restaurants called, Silk, American Icon Grill, and The Grande.
*A new suite-only restaurant was added called Coastal Kitchen.
*Seafood Shack on the Boardwalk was changed to Sabor Taqueria.
*The Boardwalk Donut Shop was replaced with the Boardwalk Dog House.
*The Ice Cream Parlour is now called Cups and Scoops with the addition of cupcakes from the Cupcake Cupboard.
*The Cupcake Cupboard was replaced with the a Kate Spade boutique.
*A few new shops came onboard and replaced others such as a new Kate Spade boutique, a Michael Kors store, and a Britto boutique.
*New staterooms and suites were added for a total of 38 new staterooms.
*The Broadway style production of Hairspray was replaced with Cats.
