The Coastal Pacific is one of New Zealand's most scenic train rides, squeezed between the Pacific Ocean and the Kaikoura Mountain Ranges. This journey starts at the Whale watching town of Kaikoura, crossing the Awatere River on a combined road/rail bridge, with track side shots of the bridge when both road and rail were still using it in 2005.

Ride New Zealand's Earthquake Railway aboard the Coastal Pacific (train) along the Kaikoura Coast

This is my favourite New Zealand train ride, at times it feels as though our wheels are running in the surf, where else can you see fur seals, dolphins, surf-riders, amazing turquoise sea, ribbon rivers and stunning mountains from the comfort of railway carriage?
The train was suspended after 14th November 2016 due to damage to the rail line caused by the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake and that could well have been the end of the story. Fortunately New Zealanders are at their best when faced with adversity, they fought against the odds and the service was restored for the 2019 summer season.
I had used this service several times before the quake and I was keen to see the newly restored route in operation. The scale of the changes took me by surprise as did the amount of work still required. I drove the parallel road route the following day, work was taking place on and around the railway at many locations, it is a wonder that they manage to run trains at all. To get some idea of the task faced after the quake, please click on this link -
If you’ve taken a look at the photos shown at the link above, you will have seen the devastation for yourself. The quake might have destroyed both the road and railway in many places, but the views from the window are still as spectacular as ever, I hope you can find time to join me for a ride on the Coastal Pacific.

Anyone wishing to follow the route, whilst watching the video - Video Map kindly sent this link:
After Uploading this footage as 'Edited Highlights' and high speed versions to gauge people's reactions, I have now uploaded the 'Full Version' in 2 parts after a number of people contacted me and asked to see the full version. I enjoy watching complete Cab Rides, but was not sure that other people would share my view. (On the earlier Ganz Mavag units, passengers had a forward facing view as the driving cab was to one side. This video was taken from one of these units). I hope you enjoy the ride along some of New Zealand's picturesque coastline.

New Coastal Pacific Train 2014 - Part 2 - from the Drivers Cab and Open Air Observation Carriage.

We continue our trip along the Pacific coast of New Zealand's South Island. In this section we leave Lake Grassmere and head for Kaikoura, passing pleasant rolling hills before skirting the Pacific Coastline, at times the sea seems to come right up to the train. We thread our way through a succession of tunnels, never far from the rocky coastline and empty beaches on one side and the Kaikoura mountain range on the other.

New Coastal Pacific Train 2014 - Part 3 - from the Drivers Cab and Open Air Observation Carriage.

On this part of the trip, our train heads inland for a short while before once again skirting the Pacific Ocean on an ever narrower ledge, passing deserted beaches before leaving the ocean for the last time and heading inland along the Conway River Valley into the mountains and onto the Canterbury Plains for the run into Christchurch, crossing wide braided rivers on the way.

Part 1 - New TranzAlpine 2014 – from the drivers cab, observation carriage and the line-side.

Part 1 covers the journey from Christchurch to Springfield. We pass railway sidings, heavy industry, and leafy suburbs before leaving the Main South Line at Rolleston to join the Midland Line. Now our train picks up speed as it races across the Canterbury Plains towards Springfield with the Southern Alps visible on the horizon.
