Top 10 must-see while in New-Caledonia

????

Spectacular natural scenery, jaw-droppingly beautiful islands and a unique fusion of French and Melanesian culture make New Caledonia one of the true jewels of the South Pacific. In New Caledonia, nature does not conceal its pleasures. Idyllic beaches border the largest lagoon in the world, and thick forests are home to more than 3,000 native species; the French archipelago is a promise of the exoticness. Here is our top 10 must-see while in New-Caledonia!

???? The video features the following locations:

1. Upi Bay, Isle of Pines: The Isle of Pines is hardly lacking in magnificent bays, but Upi, if not the most visited, is undoubtedly the most spectacular. Discover its unique landscape on a traditional dugout canoe and follow the current to the stunning Isle of Pines, concealed between huge coral rocks that seem to float on the turquoise lagoon. Keep a lookout for turtles, rays and dolphins!

2. Amedee Lighthouse: No-one should leave Nouméa without visiting Amédée, the capital's most famous islet. It is home to an impressive 19th century metal lighthouse and a natural marine reserve known for its tropical fish and turtles. If you want to take a break from swimming and relaxing, the climb to the lighthouse offers an incredible 360° panorama over the lagoon and the coral reef!

3. Mouli Beach, Ouvea: Lined with stunning white sands, Mouli Beach is one of the best beaches in New Caledonia. Calm clear waters lap against the pure white sands, creating an ideal backdrop for a fun day out at the beach. Spend the day paddling and snorkelling, or set out on a walk along the beach’s long sandy stretches to admire the picturesque coastal destination in all its glory.

4. Natural Pool, Isle of Pines: The Oro Bay swimming pool is a natural aquarium, with translucent water and schools of multicoloured fish. This coral basin is sheltered from the currents, surrounded by New Caledonia pines and a beautiful white sand beach. It is easily accessible via a trail to the north of the Isle of Pines or from Upi Bay by dugout canoe.

5. Blue River Park, Great South: This is the most popular park in New Caledonia, undoubtedly the most incredible one. Located in the south of the Grande Terre, the Blue River Park promises a truly exotic scenery in a very unusual setting. Nature here has not changed for millions of years! It is also an extraordinary adventure playground with a wide range of activities!

6. Poe Lagoon, West Coast: The lagoon nature reserve, registered since 2008 as World Heritage by UNESCO, is an open-air aquarium where corals and colorful fish come together in a natural harmony. Diving enthusiasts will be amazed by the views in this clear water that has so much to offer. Kite surfers and windsurfers will be thrilled enjoying ideal conditions in the lagoon. For the bravest, discover the immensity of the lagoon from above with a skydiving jump!

7. Shabadran Terraces, Mare: To get to the site, visitors need to hike for around 2 and a half hours. Though a little strenuous (watch out for the very sharp coral!), the route offers stunning viewpoints over the coral plateaus and the island’s cliffs. When you finally reach the Shabadran terraces, you will understand why this unique white sandy beach has such an outstanding reputation. To discover with a guide!

8. Hen-shaped rocks, Eat Coast: It's impossible to miss the imposing black limestone rock that looms out of the waters of Hienghène Bay. Known as La Poule because of its striking resemblance to a hen, it has even influenced the legends of the local tribes, who made it the ancestral guardian of the region and one of the symbols of their country. To get a closer look and navigate around the surrounding Lindéralique rocks, a kayak is the way to go!

9. Giant Fern Park: The Giant Fern Park is made up of 4,500 hectares of protected rainforest. The Park also abounds with many species endemic to New Caledonia, most notably the iconic Cagou bird, which you can see in its natural environment. From a simple family outing through to thrills and adrenaline rush, the Giant Fern Park has a wide range of activities.

10. Heart of Voh: Immortalised by the famous photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, this striking feature has been shared around the world. The Heart of Voh was formed naturally by the surrounding mangrove. Best seen from the air, a microlight is the ultimate way to take in this memorable sight!

Culture - New Caledonia

????

A real cultural mosaic, New Caledonia's diversity and history are some of its most valuable assets. Kanaks (indigenous people), Europeans (Caldoches), Asians and Polynesians all share their ways of life and authentic experiences: participate in a Kanak welcome ceremony, sleep in a hut with the tribe and enjoy bougna (traditional Kanak dish), attend a rodeo with the bushmen, or enjoy the French touch in Nouméa (gourmet meals, delicatessens, cocktail bars, etc.)!

Uncover Maré, New Caledonia’s best kept secret

????

As the most easterly of the Loyalty Islands, Maré is the first to welcome the morning sun, the caress of the trade winds and the beginning of the yam season. Taking out the title of the highest island in the New Caledonian archipelago, it also happens to be the second largest in the Loyalty Islands, remaining largely untouched by the outside world. Boasting breathtaking beauty, unforgettable experiences, and unmatched serenity, you’ll find that there’s nowhere else quite like Maré.
Wild by nature, the island’s landscapes effortlessly combine the spectacle of steep cliffs and dense, dark forests with fine sand coves and impressive rocky headlands.
Shabadran Terraces: Bordered by tall palms and striking coral cliffs, it is the postcard-perfect white sands and secluded setting that have led it to be described as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Stroll along the sands and take ample time to soak up the beauty of this wonderful corner of the globe. The hike is best suited to experienced walkers, with good hiking shoes a must.
Wabao Bay: Remained largely untouched by development, Wabao Bay is the perfect place to disconnect from the day-to-day demands of modern life. Find your own stretch of sugar white sand, lay down your beach towel and watch the waves roll in.
Bone hole: Situated around 3 km from La Roche, the Trou de Bone sinkhole is considered to be one of the largest of its kind. Around 40 metres in depth, the natural landmark, also known as the Bone Hole, is filled with clear waters that allow you to see far into the sinkhole below. The site also happens to be well known for creating an impressive echo, so be sure to test out the acoustics during your visit.
Natural Aquarium: Located to the south of Tadine, Maré’s Aquarium Naturelle (natural aquarium) is one of the island’s incredible attractions. Home to crystal clear waters and surrounded by lush vegetation, it’s a true natural marvel. Keep an eye out for the incredible marine species that call the waters home, from a variety of colourful fish to turtles.
Warrior’s Leap is a worthy addition to any island itinerary, pairing incredible scenery with a local legend that is just as captivating. Rising close to 30 metre above the ocean, the gorge is said to have acted as an escape route for a warrior cornered by enemies - a heroic feat that shouldn’t be replicated by even the most athletic of visitors.
Visit a local tribe: Local tribes will open their doors to you, providing an affordable, and unforgettable, accommodation option. While staying with a tribe, guests generally sleep in typical Melanesian huts set slightly apart from the family house. The clay or cement floor huts have mats for sleeping and a traditional hearth in the centre. Cooking and showering facilities are housed in separate buildings. Kanak families welcoming you to their tribe will share their customs, their way of life and their know-how during your stay, allowing you to learn more about traditional life in New Caledonia. An experience quite unlike any other, the time spent getting to know the locals certainly won’t be forgotten any time soon. Look forward to activities such as traditional fishing, pandanus plaiting (making baskets, mats and more), preparing bougna (a traditional Kanak dish) and visiting yam plantations.

Flying over New Caledonia

????

Discover New Caledonia’s incredible diversity of landscapes from above.
Close to Australia, New Caledonia is like nowhere else: a lagoon registered on the UNESCO world heritage list, a main island, Grande Terre, with spectacular natural scenery, a true adventure playground and jaw-dropping islands. New Caledonia is also a land of welcome and authenticity where people and cultural influences blend in together, making your trip an unforgettable one.
Named by Captain Cook because of its apparent similarity to Scotland, this French South Pacific region has it all. A stunning blue-green lagoon surrounds the whole island and contains one of the world’s best natural aquariums.
Grand Terre is dominated by an impressive mountain range. A thick forest and grasslands dotted with paperbark trees decorate this range and act as a refuge to a unique ecosystem. The plant and animal life in New Caledonia is rarely seen anywhere else in the world. Hiking paths and natural reserves showcase and preserve New Caledonia’s fascinating geography—mountain ridges look out toward untamed shorelines so, wherever you travel, you can feast your eyes on the best of both worlds!
On the West Coast, discover the « Caledonian Far West », with its large livestock farming domains and its hills covered of niaoulis. On the northern tip of Grande Terre, enjoy shimmering hills, small sandy coves, and a spread of islets, set in the backdrop of the lagoon. The East Coast presents landscapes of luxuriant forests along a narrow coastal strip inserted between the mountains and the ocean. The Great South, is the most symbolic region for New Caledonia’s three main colours: blue, green and red. From the rainforest to the mining lands there are a thousand shades of green, while the ocean offers a dazzling palette of blues. But if one colour dominates the Great South, it is the specific red of its ground. The Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands represent the best of any trip to the South Pacific, with immaculate white sandy shores, crystal clear waters and Kanak traditions.
