We had a list of things we wanted to buy before going on a trek and we explored the bazar in Thamel which is the main tourist hotspot in Kathmandu Nepal. We were surprised at how cheap everything was.

■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: This Sunday evening I was invited to wine and dine with my favorite Nepali citizen. Since I'm not one to show up without presents, I decided to go shopping at Kathmandu's Bhrikuti Bazaar first. This is perhaps the cheapest market in Nepal's capital so I decided to truly investigate how low the vendors would go for a Northface Winter jacket here.
To my amazement it was the vendors that operated with fixed prices that had the best bargains of all....

In this video we are heading out in the city of Lalitpur, just south of Kathmandu in Nepal to find a couple of bargains in a famous street market.
First, we head to Hamro Vegan for breakfast to try some tofu chilli, corn dogs and best of all, Biryani.
Then, we head towards the market, getting a little lost on the way but also finding ourselves in the middle of a Hindu celebration known as Krishna Janmashtami.
Finally, we arrive at the market and navigate the crowds to find our items.

Nepal Knife Shop: $300 Kukri ????????
■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: I spent today wandering around Kathmandu's many markets looking for unique shops to buy Nepalese souvenirs from. To be honest I didn't find many stores that piqued my interest. But one stood out, the Ghurka knife shop selling Kukris in the centre of Kathmandu.
Kukris come in many shapes and sizes. Some are ceremonial. Others are used for hunting and in combat. This shop had it all so I felt compelled to investigate and make a purchase.

■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: My favorite food in the whole world, as far as taste is concerned, is that of India. Seeing as Nepal is right next doors, expectations were thus sky high as far as the local food is concerned. The hotel I'm staying didn't do much to put a dampener on said expectations either when the receptionist stated upon check-in that; Nepalese cuisine is identical to that of India.
Yaay! This was going to be swell I thought. So I ordered a Butter Chicken to my room right then and there. I ate it but wasn't impressed. So out I ventured to try the restaurants. I walked into one of the most highly rated on Tripadvisor and whilst not horrible, I wasn't impressed.
I therefore decided to go for the Nepalese street food options. However Saturday being a holiday here, the once that caught my attention were all closed. So it wasn't before today (which is Sunday) that I finally was able to try some authentic dirt cheap Nepalese street food.
I decided to go for two dishes. The first, Chow Mein. Whilst not quintessentially Nepalese (it's not) I was highly impressed. So impressed in fact that I decided to go for another dish this street food stall had on offer: Samosa! But which was better? The Chow mein or the Samosa?

Nepal is home to over 100 different ethnicities so it's safe to say that the food culture of this country is immense and diverse. We're in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal to explore the food culture of this vibrant city. We start with a traditional Nepali breakfast at the bazaar of sel roti, gwaramari- a traditional Newari food and chiya (tea). We then head to a locals favourite for one of Nepal's most beloved foods- momos (dumplings). We visit Patan, one of the three cities that make up the Kathmandu Valley to delve into Newari food- the Newar are the indigenous inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley- and eat woh (often called bara), a lentil pancake at a hole in the wall Newar restaurant. We finish at a 4th generation family bakery that specialises in traditional Newar sweets and eat lakhamari, a sweet bread.
