Nepal Street Food: $0.20 Samosa vs. $0.80 Chow mein ????????

■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: My favorite food in the whole world, as far as taste is concerned, is that of India. Seeing as Nepal is right next doors, expectations were thus sky high as far as the local food is concerned. The hotel I'm staying didn't do much to put a dampener on said expectations either when the receptionist stated upon check-in that; Nepalese cuisine is identical to that of India.

Yaay! This was going to be swell I thought. So I ordered a Butter Chicken to my room right then and there. I ate it but wasn't impressed. So out I ventured to try the restaurants. I walked into one of the most highly rated on Tripadvisor and whilst not horrible, I wasn't impressed.

I therefore decided to go for the Nepalese street food options. However Saturday being a holiday here, the once that caught my attention were all closed. So it wasn't before today (which is Sunday) that I finally was able to try some authentic dirt cheap Nepalese street food.

I decided to go for two dishes. The first, Chow Mein. Whilst not quintessentially Nepalese (it's not) I was highly impressed. So impressed in fact that I decided to go for another dish this street food stall had on offer: Samosa! But which was better? The Chow mein or the Samosa?

Luxury Nepal 2: Nepalese Dinner ????????

■ NEPAL, DHULIKHEL: As the sun set on this ultra luxurious resort on the outskirts of Kathmandu I started getting hungry. But there was only one problem. I didn't feel like sitting in the restaurant as I was still dead tired and not in the mood to leave the comfort of my luxurious executive suite.

Enter room service to the rescue. Turns out there was no need to journey down to the restaurant as they'd bring everything to your room. The menu consisted of two set option. A locally sourced Nepalese 3 course dinner or some Western cuisine. I opted for the former as I had yet to truly investigate the Nepalese kitchen.

Praying that it'd taste like Indian food I sat down and waited....

It's my Indian wife's first time in Nepal! So I take her out to Bhaktapur, an ancient city 13 km from Kathmandu, to get her reactions as an Indian in Nepal.

Foreigners NOT Welcome: Indian Street Food Ahmedabad

■ INDIA, AHMEDABAD: You have to try Gujarati food people have been tellin me ever since I touched down in Ahmedabad. So I thought I would do just that by going to the famous Manekchok Streetfood market which opens at night. What I wasn't anticipating though was that my first dish there would be Punjabi. After a little trouble ordering due to my non-existant Hindi language skills I finally was served a delicious Veg Manchurian.

I took a stranger shopping in Nepal ????????

■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: After checking in to the world's greatest five dollar hotel room, my new friend from the reception wanted to take me to the market. Given the state of the hotel room, I could only imagine the state of the local market. So this was something I had to see with my own eyes.

My new friend didn't speak a word of English but he is one of the most jovial characters I've met in a while. He was therefore mighty excited when it finally sunk in that I wasn't shopping for myself at this bargain Nepalese market but for him....

$5 Hotel vs. $100 Hotel Nepal ????????

■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: Wherever I go in this world I like to stay in hotels in the $30 to $40 range. Even in Europe or America it's generally possible to find something in that range. You just have to compromise a lot on quality, amenities and comfort.

But how cheap can a hotel room get if you're willing to compromise on hygiene, cleanliness, amenities, quality (essentially everything) in a country like Nepal?

Well, that's what I set out to investigate as I left the relative comfort of my $100 suite hotel room to search for Kathmandu's cheapest hotel room.

■ More updates from the road:

Himalaya Gongo Hotel ????????

■ NEPAL, HIMALAYA: Ever since I'd ran into an Indian trekker coming back down along the Langtang river on my first day of this Himalayan excursion, I've had one thing on my mind: get to Tibet Guesthouse at Lama Hotel rest-stop and try their Gongo (or Roksi as it's called in Nepal).

I always like to sample locally made brews when I'm in a new country and according to this Indian who had just spent the previous night at Tibet Hotel, the owner there had made the best Gongo he'd ever had in his entire life.

In fact, and I quote: He has brewed it to perfection!, he said.

That's why I set out from Bamboo Lodge so early in the morning without even eating anything other than a granola bar. I wanted to get to Tibet Guesthouse as soon as possible to start the day like any real man should: with a fresh shot of Gongo!

What I didn't expect though was to run into the coolest and nicest couple I met on my whole Himalayan trekking adventure. A couple that started the very first lodge at the Hotel Lama location over 40 years ago and are still running that same guesthouse today.

■ Now before you watch, or after for that matter, I'd like to comment on what you see in the very beginning here, which I actually fully understand given the hard times hotel and guesthouse operators face, but still rubs me the wrong way. As I'm walking into this area here called Lama hotel I already knew where I was going: Tibet Guesthouse.

Every-time I entered a cluster of guesthouses like this, the people who run the first hotels and restaurants will of course be outside trying their best get you to stop at theirs. In this case however I knew where I was going and clearly stated I was going to Tibet Guesthouse, although I didn't know exactly which building that was.

Instead of simply pointing it out for me, they answer evasively on all my questions and instead say something along the lines of why don't I stop at their hotel instead.

Normally I am fairly good and ignoring such people but in this case I was so obsessed with hunting for Gongo that they nearly got the better of me. Especially when I saw that big barrel of I almost set up shop there and as you can see for the next 5 minutes even after getting away, seriously pondered going back to eat at said hotel.

Luckily I came to my senses and both drank and ate at Tibet Guesthouse which was the original plan. My point is when someone already know where they're going I wish they'd simply say sure... that's the hotel you see 3 buildings down there on the right; enjoy!

■ Updates from the road on my instagram:

This man won't leave you alone! ????????

■ SRI LANKA, HAPUTALE: After unsuccessfully trying to find something that looked edible and unlikely to make for a troublesome return bus journey to Ella, I opted for the safety of a Snickers and Mars bar. With my newfound sugar high it was time to check out the local Haputale market.

Perched high on a cliff side adjacent to the train station, this market offers stunningly high views and correspondingly low prices. A rare combination. So just how cheap is this market and what do they sell here? Why is the Yes Man of Haputale following me? And did I manage to escape the Yes Man of Sri Lanka in the end?

Hard Rock Cafe Himalaya ????????

■ NEPAL, HIMALAYA: I thought the American hard rock cafe chain was the real deal..... that was until high up in the Himalayan mountain range I discovered a cafe that goes by the same name, but the famous American restaurant chain, is actually built into a huge rock. That's right... the Himalayan Hard Rock Cafe is literally a cafe that is built into a hard rock.

If you saw my videos from a few weeks back, you'll have seen me walk by the Himalayan Hard Rock Cafe starving... only to discovered that it was closed. That coupled with the fact that I never swam in the river at the highest point kept bothering the hell out of me after I'd returned to Kathmandu.

It made me want to go back to complete my physical and culinary mission. Then as I started uploading my Himalayan videos... people from the Langtang mountain range started reaching out telling me how grateful they were for marketing their region and sending tourists back up their way.

One of the people who wrote me runs a bakery in Kyanjin Gumpa. He mentioned he knew the owner of The Hard Rock Cafe that was closed when I did my trek. After giving her a call he told me she'd open the restaurant just for me.

It was time to return to the mountains...
