Top of my agenda was thus to scour through Saigon's famous 'fake' clothes market (Ben Thanh) for a 2nd, 3rd and 4th outfit. From Nike shoes, Tommy Hilfiger t-shirts and Calvin Klein underwear this market has it all.
So what do the products cost? What is the starting price? And what can for example a t-shirt be haggled down to? This and much more in episode one of my mega Vietnam fake market hunt.

■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: This Sunday evening I was invited to wine and dine with my favorite Nepali citizen. Since I'm not one to show up without presents, I decided to go shopping at Kathmandu's Bhrikuti Bazaar first. This is perhaps the cheapest market in Nepal's capital so I decided to truly investigate how low the vendors would go for a Northface Winter jacket here.
To my amazement it was the vendors that operated with fixed prices that had the best bargains of all....

■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: After checking in to the world's greatest five dollar hotel room, my new friend from the reception wanted to take me to the market. Given the state of the hotel room, I could only imagine the state of the local market. So this was something I had to see with my own eyes.
My new friend didn't speak a word of English but he is one of the most jovial characters I've met in a while. He was therefore mighty excited when it finally sunk in that I wasn't shopping for myself at this bargain Nepalese market but for him....

Gift for honest Nepali store owner ????????
In Thamel, the most touristy part of Kathmandu, there's a shop that sells real hemp backpacks. After Tanya bought a small bag from the shop the day before, and the owner didn't try to rip us off, in fact, the prices were fantastic, we decided to go back and buy a couple more bags from him.
Business isn't very good at the minute due to obvious reasons, so I was glad to help a bit, and hopefully some of you guys head there to give him some business if you're ever in Kathmandu.
I gave the guy in the shop a peshwari hat that I bought in Pakistan a few weeks ago, and in return he gave me a Nepal flag and a little keyring with the Gurkha sword on it! Excellent.

■ ITALY, PALERMO: You can get some some true bargain apartments on Sicily. This one that I rented in Palermo though doesn't fall into that category but given its location, size and rooftop balcony I'd say it's still a pretty fair deal.
With Airbnb fees and everything added in it came out to about $80 per night. What adds a lot of extra value to the apartment IMO is that it is located in a street where cars are not allowed to drive but is packed with restaurants serving delicious local Sicilian food.

To start off, we need some delicious naan, and end up finding pani puri street food, as well! You know how we love to eat! Plus, we can’t do any shopping on empty stomachs, or everyone will have a meltdown. Then, the kids need warmer jackets and rain ponchos for the start of the monsoon, so we go to a few shops to compare prices and styles. We end the day with hot cups of chai in a small mom-and-pop shop. Now, we are ready for sleep and the big trek ahead of us. Namaste!

Bittersweet moment: Our last 24 hours in Kathmandu, Nepal! Good thing we have so much to do, preparing for our next travel day, before heading to the airport. Join us as we spend the day shopping in Thamel trying to get everything ready before heading to our next destination! We need to go shopping in Thamel for passport photos, laundry, sunglasses (Kelly lost hers), Jonathan needs a shave, and Forest needs ice cream! Granite and Cedar help Kelly shop for airplane snacks at a local grocery store. We end the night being grateful for this time in Nepal together as a family, eating momos and chicken lollipops!
