Campsite Review: Tashinga Camp (Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe)[Overlanding Africa]

Camping in Zimbabwe, in the very difficult to get to in the rainy season Matusadona National Park, at the furthest point in the park, Tashinga Camp, right on the shores of Lake Kariba.

Camping at Tashinga, and experiencing this part of Matusadona, is well worth the trip, and definitely recommended. It's probably best to travel there outside of the rainy season, especially if going by road.

Zimbabwe - Matopos National Park

The Matobo Hills just south of Bulawayo are composed entirely of granite, weathered into fantastic shapes. San bushmen lived in the hills about 2,000 years ago,and left hundreds of rock paintings.

We visited Zimbabwe on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our playlist

Umfurudzi National Park, Zimbabwe (Redux)

We recently revisited Umfurudzi Game Park, one of our favourite National Parks Here In Zimbabwe. Poaching has had a massive impact on the game in the area, but the landscapes are as beautiful as ever. Hope you enjoy watching our adventures, be sure to let us what you make of it. Gone to Gona: Gonarezhou Zimbabwe Adventure - The Place of Elephants (Gonarezhou National Park)

We travel to Gonarezhou National Park, the Place of Elephants. And certainly, the name rings true. Back to Beitbridge and the new border, finding our way through the new border procedures there. Arriving at Chipinda Pools a little later than planned, with a night-time river crossing providing some adrenaline on the way!

And what you've heard is true - the elephants can be quite aggressive; mock charging, chasing vehicles, trumpeting, and generally being rather grumpy, especially the fierce males. But what an incredible destination. An absolute must-visit, we recommend you put it on your bucket list today! Gonarezhou is worth the visit, and the spectacular Chilojo Cliffs must be experienced at sunset, so definitely consider booking a campsite there.

We hope you'll enjoy this extended episode on our Gone to Gona adventure, including a very entertaining river crossing of the Limpopo on the 'ferry' upon our return. Let us know in the comments what you think of this longer format movie.

Discovering Chizarira National Park, Zimbabwe

Hi friends and followers, we are back! During these qieter days of lockdown, we re-discovered some of the footage we took during our recent conservation expedition, but that has never seen the light of day! We wanted to share it with you now, and bring some adventure into your homes during this difficult time.

In this episode, we travel off the beaten track to Chizarira National Park in Zimbabwe. Known as The Hidden Gorges, Chizarira is Zimbabwe’s third-largest national park but arguably its most remote wilderness area! Join us on this adventure as we battle some tough terrain and get rewarded some very special views!

To Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

The last part of our transfer day from Zambia to Zimbabwe. We enter into the Hwange National Park to go to Kashawe Tented Camp. On the way we see the controversial coal mines that have caused so much strife in the country. It's amazing to see so much desolation just before one of the largest and most important national parks of the country that is supposed to protect so much wildlife. We wanted to get to camp before nightfall, so the drive was pretty fast, but there must be lots of animals around. At night we got escorted to our rooms by an armed guard!

Beautiful Zimbabwe: Episode 5 - The road to Gonarezhou: A place of Elephants

In this final episode of Beautiful Zimbabwe, Ryan convinces me, to travel with him to Gonarezhou. We then take the route less travelled to get there and obviously arrive late again, but we have the most amazing adventure through the most incredible lands.

Thank you to Ryan from @4x4ventures for some of the great footage in this episode.

Big 5 Volunteering in Zimbabwe National Parks

Be a wildlife conservation volunteer in Zimbabwe and join this unique project, dedicated to two of Zimbabwe's most unspoilt and iconic National Parks.

Work as a field assistant in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe's oldest and largest park, a park the same size as Belgium! Home to all of Africa's iconic Big 5 game, volunteers support local staff in their day-to-day activities.

The focus of this conservation volunteer project is to assist with the operation and rehabilitation of two of Zimbabwe’s National Parks - its largest, Hwange, and one of its most neglected, the Zambezi National Park. The project supplies game water for wildlife, particularly to support Hwange’s ever-growing elephant population. It also assists National Parks rangers with park maintenance, deployment of personnel and environmental monitoring.

What will volunteers be doing?
This is a unique opportunity to volunteer as a Field Assistant, supporting the daily operations of the project staff. You will participate in park infrastructure and development projects, wildlife monitoring, bird and animal population surveys, and ranger field support. Learn about the work being done to sustain Zimbabwe’s wildlife and natural environment, and the challenges facing conservationists working to support animals in vast National Parks.

This project is perfect for zoology and biology students, post-graduates, mature volunteers and career break travel.

Be a conservation volunteer in Zimbabwe, and join the team today!

Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe. Travel guide.

The Matusadona National Park is situated on the shores of Lake Kariba between the Ume and Sanyati Rivers.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Zimbabwe:
It covers an area of 1407 sq. km of which only a third is provided with roads for visitors. The other two thirds consists of very wild, rugged and inaccessible country.
The park has a beautiful, shady camping ground at Tashinga on the lakeshore.
There is an ablution block with hot and cold water, showers, toilets, wash basins and baths.Firewood and braai facilities are available.
Some of the campsites boast sleeping and dining shelters.
For the adventurous canoes are available for hire to explore the shores of the park.
The colours of an African sunset over water will provide spectacular memories of Lake Kariba and the unspoilt beauty of Matusadona.
Visitors are allowed to get out of their cars and view game on foot, but this is done at their own risk.Wild animals are dangerous and unpredictable.
Elephant, buffalo, impala, kudu and waterbuck are plentiful, whilst rhino, lion, sable, eland and zebra are frequently seen.
Escorted walks with a game Scout are possible, subject to availability of staff at the time.
Free fishing throughout the year is obtainable in the Kariba Lake.
Tiger, bream and vundu provide good sport but a word of warning, look out for crocodiles when standing at the water's edge and avoid swimming in shallow/shoreline areas.
