The History, Geography, and Climate of Napa Valley Wine County California

There’s no region more iconic in the American wine scene than the Napa Valley. Napa is credited with giving American wine the street cred it needed to hang with the France and Italy’s of the world. It has an allure and prestige surrounding it that screams luxury. Consequently, the price of land is through the roof. Wineries who own it tend to be split into 2 camps: wineries who bought their land when it was cheap, and are now mega producers (think Mondavi) or new money from tech or celebrity, making wine as passion projects. Nothing wrong with either, but in order to find wines that have some value and craft to them, you gotta dig a little deeper.

Napa Valley Wine Train Yard walk around

The Napa Valley Wine Train is a luxurious and iconic excursion that takes passengers on a scenic journey through the picturesque Napa Valley wine country in California. As the name suggests, this experience combines the elegance of vintage rail travel with the world-renowned wine culture of the region, offering a unique and unforgettable way to explore the area's vineyards, wineries, and stunning landscapes.

The train is normally pulled by two of the four late-1950s era Alco FPA-4 engines in the company's inventory. These engines were originally built by Montreal Locomotive Works and first owned by Canadian National Railway and later by Via Rail.

The Napa Valley Wine Train said that its new locomotive will be “nearly silent and odorless,” enhancing the passenger travel experience as it complies with environmental regulations.

Manufactured by Rolls-Royce and commissioned through the Knoxville Locomotive Works, the 1864 engine is designed to run with low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions that meet or exceed current EPA and California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 4 emissions classifications.

The train itself is a beautifully restored vintage railcar, reminiscent of the golden age of train travel, with luxurious interiors featuring plush seating, polished wood paneling, and panoramic windows that provide sweeping views of the Napa Valley scenery. Passengers can relax in comfort as they embark on a leisurely journey through rolling hills, vineyards, and charming towns, enjoying the scenic beauty of the region from the comfort of their seat.

But the highlight of the Napa Valley Wine Train experience is undoubtedly the onboard dining and wine-tasting experience. The train offers a variety of gourmet dining options, ranging from multi-course meals prepared by talented chefs using locally sourced ingredients to more casual dining experiences featuring California-inspired cuisine.

Napa and Sonoma | California Wine Country

On my last day in the bay area I thought it would be fun to drive north and visit one of the most well known wine regions in the United States. Sonoma and Napa are home to over 800 wineries in a beautiful hilly area. It's a little expensive, but a great place to relax and enjoy tasting wine at a few vineyards. Be sure to do some research first and make reservations in advance.
