Elephants of Thailand (Sailing Nandji) Ep 123

With an afternoon off in Thailand, we visit the Ethical Elephant Sanctuary.

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are in Thailand! After needing a mountain of stainless steel fabricated for our refit of Nandji we decided to head to Thailand on Uncles boat as the craftsman ship is much better than Langkawi at a more affordable price. We set off for a week long trip and hoped to get everything made in the short time we planned to stay. After riding around on our scooters for over 4 hours a day chasing up and organising the work to be done, we found ourselves with an afternoon off in Phuket!

Bonita had heard of an ethical Elephant Sanctuary where they care for old disabled elephants. The sanctuary buys the Elepahnts from around Thailand from people who mistreat and abuse the elephants and then offer them a safe natural place for them to live in their normal habitat. Having no idea where to go, we set off on our scooter trying to find and learn more about this amazing place!

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to Malaysia to complete major boat work, ready for the next big adventure. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades! Indian Ocean here we come!!

SAILOR GIRL LIVES WITH MENTAWAI TRIBE | Sailing Indonesia (Sailing Nandji) Ep144

Bonita goes on a solo mission DEEP into the Jungle to live with the remote traditional Mentawai Tribe

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we decide we want to challenge our selves as our sailing plans have changed. So Bonita leaves Nandji on a solo mission into the jungle to live with the remote Mentawai Tribe who live and follow their traditional ways. She leaves Yosh all alone on Nandji who in the next episode performs his first ever offshore overnight solo sail.

Bonita heads deep into the jungle on Siberut island to watch and learn how the traditional tribe live. She stays with the Shaman Cookie, who invites her into his home and shows Bonita some of the daily tasks of living in the Jungle. Cookie teaches the ways of collecting and eating insects, how to make poison arrows to kill animals and goes fishing in the stream with a local lady. This is an experience of a life time as she is the first girl to travel solo to the remote tribe and live amongst them. What a brave lady!

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to the Andaman islands and onto Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trades begin again!

We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!

How to Fiberglass & Engine Room Makeover! (Sailing Nandji) Ep 120

Our engine room has gone form a Oily Greasy mess to a shiny bright white!

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, Nandji is high and dry in the boat yard. With a looong list of jobs we plan to complete whilst on the hard stand, we are busy in renovating our engine room ready to install our new Yanmar Fang. We have been lucky to have a fellow Salty sailor wish to help us install the new engine, Uncle Kevin is also a guru fibreglasser after glassing surfboards professionally for over 30 years. This man knows a thing or two about fibreglassing and he takes us through the types of matting we use to reinforce the bearers ready for the new engine mounts to bolt on too. After two weeks on the hard stand our engine room has gone form a oily greasy mess from our old engine to a glistening white solid room ready for our new motor!

We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! The Prop that gives you an Extra Knot | Sailboat Refit (Sailing Nandji) EP 126

Sail faster by installing a new prop, Yep, thats the plan!

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we install our NEW Autoprop onto Nandji. We are very excited about this upgrade to our sailboat. In our eyes, this is the second most important upgrade we have made to Nandji behind the new engine. The Autoprop from Bruntons is specifically designed for cruisers at it can give an extra knot of speed under sail! That is a massive difference for us slower boats!

To install the Autoprop onto Nandji, we have to make a few modifications to the sweep area of the prop. As the new Autoprop has a little larger blades than our previous fixed bladed prop, it also is a feathering prop requiring a larger sweep area as the blades rotate 180 degrees giving the vessel the same power going astern as forwards propulsion. When under sail, the self pitching blades pitch to a degree where up to 85% of drag is reduced allowing the boat a much higher speed under sail! Stop it you say, well I agree my friend...

If you want to know more about the Autoprop, follow the link below...

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. Currently on the hard stand, we are re-powering and completing a major refit!

SAILING the BEST Catamaran Under 40' [Seawind 1160 Lite Sailing Review/Vlog #2] Learning the Lines

This is the second video in a multi-part sailing/cruising review of the Seawind 1160 Lite. We had the opportunity to cruise aboard a Seawind 1160 Lite for three days alone to really get a feel for if this boat will be right for us. We vlogged about our trip and we'll be sharing what our thoughts are about the boat as much as possible.

We're seriously considering the Seawind 1160 Lite for our next boat because of the long list of positives this catamaran has to offer. Here's just a few of the most important ones to us:

Size - We don't want a huge cat.
Seaworthiness - Plenty of Seawinds have circumnavigated.
Performance - The Seawind 1160 lite is designed to sail well first and foremost.
Livability - She's got a lot of accommodation and room for a 38' boat.
Price point - At a $310,000 base price for a new boat, the Seawind 1160 lite is the most affordable performance cruising catamaran in existence.

All of that combined with the fact that we can set one up with electric outboards, daggerboards, and lifting rudders means we think that the Seawind 1160 Lite might be the best boat possible for our budget and lifestyle.

What do you think?

Base price for a Seawind 1160 Lite:
$310,000

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

:::::::FAQ:::::::

- How do you afford to travel constantly?
A: I travel really cheap, free camping, cooking my own meals, being as efficient as possible. I make my income almost entirely on YouTube but it's really tight. Ad revenue, patreon, paypal donations, merchandise sales and affiliate links bring in about as much as a part time minimum wage job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough I go back to work, doing photography mostly, sometimes commercial video projects, but it takes me away from my travels and videos.

- How much does it cost?
I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work.

- What camera do you use?
Sony A7ii, DJI Mavic Pro, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, DIY tripods and lights.

- What is your bike?
1999 Yamaha Vstar XVS1100 with a Champion Escort sidecar.

- What kind of boat is that?
It's a 1979 Wharram Oro 47

- What're your plans?
Fix it up, run nothing but green power, sail off into the sunset.

- How do you find all these cool places?
To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent:

- What do you do for Internet?
I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna ( and a data package on my phone (10GB)

- How do you live on the road with a dog?
It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make some decisions, avoiding places that ban dogs, and spending more time out in nature instead of in the cities.

- What happened to the girl?
We decided to go separate ways (

- Are you rich or something?
definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible.

- Why don't you have 10x more subscribers?
My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time.

- Where are you now?
The top perk on my Patreon page is a live link of my location on google maps so you can get an active idea of where I am currently. If that's not an option for you there's also Instagram and Instagram stories that give you a much better idea of what I'm up to today.

Perfect overnight sailing passage (Learning By Doing Ep200)

Our first sailing passage in a while, the first for Marie in Australia. 105nm from Magnetic Island to Bowen. It was a dream passage from start to end, we lifted anchor at 1pm and dropped anchor at 3.30am, thats a 7kt average. We had optimum wind and sea state, so good that Marie even had a shower downstairs, a first ever for her while under sail.
So good to be out of the marina and back exploring.
