Nan Madol in Pohnpei, Micronesia

Nan Madol is an archaeological site adjacent to the eastern shore of the island of Pohnpei, now part of the Madolenihmw district of Pohnpei state in the Federated States of Micronesia in the western Pacific Ocean. Nan Madol was the capital of the Saudeleur Dynasty until about 1628. The city, constructed in a lagoon, consists of a series of small artificial islands linked by a network of canals. The site core with its stone walls encloses an area approximately 1.5 km long by 0.5 km wide and it contains nearly 100 artificial islets—stone and coral fill platforms—bordered by tidal canals.

The name Nan Madol means spaces between and is a reference to the canals that crisscross the ruins. The original name was Soun Nan-leng (Reef of Heaven), according to Gene Ashby in his book Pohnpei, An Island Argosy. The ruined city is one of today's great archaeological enigmas and is sometimes called Atlantis, the eighth wonder of the world, or the Venice of the Pacific.

Nan Madol: Pohnpei Island Tour Part 1 (first time to see sakau plant) Federated States of Micronesia

Declared as a UNESCO World heritage site on July 15, 2016, the mysterious ruins of Nan Madol dates back roughly to the year 1180. It was the home of the paramount chief or nahnmwarki for generations, but the city was deserted by the mid-1800s.

Nan Madol from the sky

Several people requested this video of a flight over Nan Madol. Due to the strong winds coming off the ocean, this video has a good bit of vibration.

I also threw in a few clips from Kepirohi Waterfall.

Nan Madol Dives

First dive was off Na Island, second dive was off Nan Madol ruins complex.

Nan Madol

This is a video diagram to accompany the Nan Madol 1984 series, mostly to help with the spelling and pronunciation, but it also gives an idea of the places we visited. In the words of a prominent archaeologist, it sort of fits they could be there. If you want to be more precise Ive listed the geo coordinates for use with google satellite maps.

Nan Madol 1984: Ch 1 Mysterious Ruins

More video from the dusty old videotapes shot on a trip through the Pacific islands in 1984. By a fortunate chance we happened to be touring at the same time a prominent archaeologist, Dr. Stephen Athens, was conducting his research. He was generous enough to give this boatload of tourists a guided tour and lecture.

This first chapter covers the time before we met Dr. Athens. We were just a mixed boatload of travelers and vacationers; some expecting to see one of the wonders of the ancient world, others just taking a boat ride. All of us were astounded as Nandauwas came into view. The following chapters will cover our explorations in greater detail, as Dr. Athens explains what we are seeing. You can get a quick overview of where this is going from the already posted Sketches of Nan Madol 1984.

MICRONESIA 2013 - Praying at Nan Madol Ruins

Our missionary team joined ranks with the indigenous Pohnpeians to repent, pray, worship and take communion at the mysterious Nan Madol ruins which were said to have been built using demonic powers. Human sacrifices are said to have once been performed at this demonic stronghold, so in the Spirit we exchanged the blood of Christ for the blood of humans that was spilt here hundreds of years ago.
