Sossusvlei Namibia ???????? Desert Dunes of the Namib

Sossusvlei Namibia overland road trip. We spent 2 days and some wonderful hours exploring the red dunes of the Namib desert around Sossusvlei and the incredible Deadvlei, with it's 800 year old camelthorn trees.

Entrance is at the Sesriem gate and while there is camping and accommodation available within the park, we opted to stay in a self catering chalet at Desert Quiver Camp, which is around 5km from the entrance gate.

It was a huge privilege to witness water in Sossusvlei, something that only happens very occasionally when good rains inland bring water down the Tsauchab River into the desert, where the massive red dunes of the Namib stop it's flow to the sea.

Sossusvlei is one of Namibia's most popular tourist attractions and while there were a few other visitors, it was uncrowded, unlike our past visits in years gone by, when getting a photo of Deadvlei without people was a challenge. It's well worth going if you can, before the crowds start to make their way there again.

NAMIBIA - FLIGHT OVER SOSSUSVLEI AND NAMIBIA COAST

Exquisite Sossusvlei and Namibian coastline with flamingos, shipwrecks and cape fur seals.

Sossusvlei Dunes and Skeleton Coast Namibia - Low Flying Over Desert & Ocean

Low flying over the ancient red dunes of the Namib Desert at Sossusvlei, Namibia. We took off from the gravel airstrip at Sesriem, flew low over #Sossusvlei then towards the deserted Skeleton coast. Skimming the waves so that you almost feel like you could reach out and touch them is a once in a lifetime experience. Then back again with the late afternoon light illuminating these ancient dunes. If you get the chance I highly recommend this, it's money well spent. Sorry about the quality of the movie, it was a little rough at times.

Driving the 4x4 sand road to Deadvlei/Sossusvlei in Namibia (all 4km)

The dead camel thorn trees at the white clay pan Deadvlei surrounded by high sand dunes is one of the greatest sights in Namibia. Deadvlei, and the nearby salt pan Sossusvlei, are located in the Namib-Naukluft Park. To reach Deadvlei, you drive a 60km sealed road from Sesriem until you reach a car park. That's as far you can get with a 4x2 car, but to continue further on to the Deadvlei parking, you need a 4x4 vehicle. The tar road ends at the 4x2 parking and from there you will have to drive 4km on a sand road. This video covers the full 4km of sand driving between the two parkings.

Deadvlei and Sossusvlei in Namib Naukluft National Park in Namibia.

Namib Naukluft National Park in Namibia with its majestic sand dunes.
one of the most surreal places in the world is Deadvlei - a valley with dead tree trunks where water once used to flow. above it are 2 towering sand dunes - Big Mama and Big Papa.
Sosousvlei is where the water ends. because water is more available here, it attracts wildlife.
to arrive to both places you will need a 4x4 vehicle or take the park 4x4 shuttle service from the parking lot at the end of the tar road.

Flying over Sossusvlei, Walvis Bay, Damaraland Namibia -- Astonishing Scenery!

Leaving Cape Town, we fly at only 500-900 feet over the Sossusvlei Desert with its dramatic red and yellow dunes, then up the Atlantic coast to Swakopmund and on to Damaraland in central Namibia. The painterly geometrics are thanks to the saltworks near Walvis Bay. Credit to the mighty zoom lens of the Canon SX10IS and Sefofane air charters.

Travel Activities in Sossusvlei

My Safari tour with wild dogs safari touragency in Windhoek the capital of Namibia took me to Sossuvlei - deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon.
Also in this video a quick stop in Solitaire desert town and the few sights of Windhoek like the Christuskirche and the national museum.

More about my Travel in Namibia and the Namibian desert tour check polmeetsworld.wordpress.com direct link to my Namibia blogpost here :

Sossusvlei a 3 day Trip to the Namib Desert

Namibia Africa for beginners

After leaving Windhoek first from the Wild dog safari office, which is the tour agency I booked the trip with, we were heading towards Sesriem, travel over scenic roads with view on mountains and desert, to make a photo stop in a small town Solitaire. Photos of car wrecks with the desert landscape in behind is what most tourist take, reminding me about some of these ghost towns in the US.

After few hours of driving, our little tour bus arrived to the campsite. Here we had to set up our tents. 14 people on these trip, about 7 tents with 2 persons in each tent.
When our tents were set up, we headed to see the sunset from the nearby dunes. Once we came back the dinner was ready, barbecue and then to sleep cause the next day we head to get up early to climb the famous Dune 45.

Climbing Dune 45 was a real physical test, climbing a dune looks easy but, it ain’t cause you sink away in the sand, your shoes get filled up with the sand making it more heavy for you to walk and since its very cold in the morning, flip-flops are not an option at all. I don’t wear flip-flops anyway but I remember our guides saying to bring closed shoes to climb the dune. You got to have a jacket, I had a training vest and I still had it very cold as the wind was blowing. However once I arrived on top of the dune, it was all worth the hassle, superb view and colors changing the view of the desert area when the sun came up. Once of the best sunrises I have seen. If you remember the opening scene of Disney’s Lion King well for me it kind of felt that way. That opening tune in the Disney movie it played in my head at that moment. Here I am on this massive sand dune 45, my introduction to Africa.

After that we were on our way to Sossusvlei to have a 5km walk through the dunes. On the way I saw some animals like the Oryx, some little snakes, luckily not poison once and a jackal before arriving at Death Vlei. It means dead valley, between two high dunes of orange sand, the sand has this dark orange color because of the iron in it.
The death trees standing in the valley are there for more than 1000 years, Some are 500 years dead now and still standing. Those trees could live over 1000 years because they have deep roots and could find water very deep in the ground, but now that the desert dried out there is no water anymore, and it all died. Because of the dry temperature the ground is also very hard and has this white color. This landscape is surreal it’s like walking into an art painting. It was very hot that day so bring at least 1L of water.

Later that day we got to see the Sesriem Canyon and walked down the canyon to see the forms and curves of the stones. Watching the Sunset at Sesriem canyon before going back to our campsite for our last dinner and night with the group.
