We have arrived in New Zealand, the first stop on our travel year! We’re here for the next 3 months and will be traveling to the North and South Islands in a camper van. This video documents our first 2 weeks in the North Island.
After picking up our van, we visit Rangitoto island to climb Auckland’s largest volcano, explore Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach in the Coromandel Peninsula, and visit two geothermal parks in Rotorua, before heading to Taupo to see New Zealand’s most popular natural attraction, Huka Falls.

Pristine Blue Spring Putaruru & Cambridge in WAIKATO New Zealand | NORTH ISLAND NZ TRAVEL VLOG 1/5
NZ road trip time again! We had so much fun on our previous Northland road trip that we were itching to do more domestic travel around the North Island of New Zealand while we could take advantage of clear weather spells.
We're slowly working our way to the South Island eventually again too but for this particular road trip escapade we visited the Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty regions of North Island, NZ.
In this video we visited the town of trees and champions, Cambridge in Waikato, as well as finally seeing for ourselves the insanely clear, blue waters of Blue Spring in Putaruru. We couldn't believe our eyes how beautiful, pure and clear the water was.
Cambridge is known as the town of trees and champions in New Zealand because of its scenic sights but also because it's home to many national sports organisations and events, and a ton of NZ olympic gold medalists too.
After a few hours of driving from Auckland, our first stop in Cambridge was Hanoi Boy. Delicious, fresh Vietnamese street food served out of a food truck. It was so tasty and the perfect meal to rejuvenate us. We both got bun cha which is one of our favourite Vietnamese dishes.

A few minutes drive away we stopped off quickly at Lake Karapiro before we made our way over to the Blue Spring. Note that there is a longer walk you can do along the Waihou River but if you just want to do a much shorter walk and see the Blue Spring sooner, you can park at the Leslie Road car park like we did and go from there.

The Airbnb that we stayed at in Cambridge was clean, cosy and comfy. Lovely hosts and it was great for an overnight's stay.
During our short stay in Cambridge we also spent some time chilling out at Lake Te Koutu (also very near our Airbnb) and it's pretty much in the middle of the town centre. We had dinner at a popular local, modern Italian restaurant called Alpino. Definitely make a booking for this place. We both got pizzas and loved our meal.

Redwoods treewalk and geothermal hot pools ROTORUA, New Zealand | NORTH ISLAND NZ TRAVEL VLOG 5/5
This is the final vlog from our North Island NZ road trip that we shot a couple of weeks back. We've been to Rotorua many times before, but there's always so much to see and do in this city renowned for its fascinating geothermal activity. Rotorua is located in the Bay of Plenty region in New Zealand.
En route to Rotorua from Gisborne, we decided to make a quick stop to check out Lake Okataina but it wasn't much longer before we finally arrived at Redwoods Treewalk. This was something on our 'must do' list for Rotorua especially since there was a special on where you could do both the day and night time walks for $30 per person (normally you would have to pay for each walk so $60 per person).
Redwoods treewalk is a unique tree top walk suspended high up above the forest floor and takes roughly 40 minutes to cover the course. We recommend going later in the afternoon so that you can enjoy both the day and evening views as the sun goes down. It's quite a different experience at night when all the lights come on too. You'll want to line up relatively earlier for the night walk as the queue can get pretty long if you go too late.
Redwoods Treewalk

Hours: Monday - Sunday 9:30am–8pm (up to 9pm on Saturdays)
Rotorua is famous for its geothermal activity, hot pools, mud pools, and geysers and there are a few main places where you can check this out but Peter's favourite to see all this is Wai-O-Tapu. Here you can see acidic green lakes and the massive champagne pool where the natural colours are very vivid and striking. With 3 different walks you can do around Wai-O-Tapu, you can easily spend around 2 or so hours wondering about.

Something we really enjoy doing in cold weather is going for a soak in mineral hot pools. We find it's a great way to relax muscles and joints. An awesome thing about Waikite Valley Thermal Pools and what drew us to it is that it has private hot pools that you can book for 40 minute time slots and that also gives you access to their public pools. Best of all it's only a few bucks more than the general admission price and pools are drained and refilled daily.

To wrap up our time in Rotorua and our North Island road trip, we went to Saigon '60s for some delicious Vietnamese cuisine. We love Vietnamese food and were very happy to come across this place. Highly recommend their spring rolls! It transported us right back to Vietnam.

Railbike adventure & feeding wild stingrays GISBORNE, New Zealand | NORTH ISLAND NZ TRAVEL VLOG 4/5
Following on from our previous vlog we depart from Napier in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand and make our way over to Gisborne. Gisborne is on the east coast of the North Island in NZ and we found a couple of great activities that we lined up to enjoy as soon as we arrived.
First up we experienced a reef ecology tour at Dive Tatapouri. We got kitted up in waders and walked over the reef at low tide to go out to meet and feed some wild stingrays. We were able to learn about, observe and safely interact with these eagle ray stingrays in their natural habitat under the guidance of Dive Tatapouri. The stingrays are not enclosed within the reef and are totally free to come and go as they please. It was a really fun and awesome experience.

You should definitely book in advance if you're interested in doing this feeding stingrays in Gisborne activity with Dive Tatapouri.
After feeding stingrays it was time we got ourselves a feed too so we headed into Gisborne city centre and luckily came across Fusion Takeaway. We got ourselves a satisfyingly hot, tasty, filling lunch and even a sweet boba tea too.

We booked a cosy self contained Airbnb studio for our Gisborne accomodation and Janine and Jel even had homemade treats waiting in the fridge for us. It was delicious (thanks again guys!) :)
The next day we did an incredible Gisborne railbike adventure. It's a tandem guided bike ride tour done on abandoned railway tracks. We were blessed with brilliant clear weather to enjoy this 32km scenic bike ride. We did the beach loop track where we got to see a whole lot of beautiful countryside, ride through some cool pitch black tunnels and then get rewarded with a breathtaking view of the coast.
This railbike activity was awesome and it can be enjoyed whether you know how to ride a bike or not (you literally just peddle, no steering required) and if you're worried about your fitness level, get the e-bikes which give you a nice cruisy and easy ride. We opted for the standard bikes though for some extra exercise.

They're just some fun local experiences that we came across, liked the sound of and wanted to support. We loved both and can highly recommend them if you like a bit of adventure and to do something a little different.
Last stop for us in Gisborne NZ was to visit Kaiti Hill (aka Titirangi Hill) to get panoramic views of the city and Poverty Bay. From Kaiti Hill you can also see the city's three rivers.

Sharing with you the awesome experience New Zealand has offered during our recent trip last May 2023. We started the Journey in Gisborne for my cousin's wedding. Rotorua was amazing and I ultimately loved my Luge experience but nothing will beat the adrenaline rush I got from jumping off a plane in Taupō!
