Shirakawago Travel Guide (白川郷) | Most Beautiful Place We Visited in Japan

Join us on a day trip to Shirakawago in this travel guide as we explore the most beautiful place we visited in Japan. Shirakawa-go (白川郷) is known for its traditional Japanese farmhouses (gassho) - also known as the praying hand houses for its a-frame shape - in a valley surrounded by mountains. The trip from Takayama was approximately 50 minutes away and cost roughly $20 USD per person.

Our first stop in Shirakawa was the observatory where we had sweeping panoramic views of the incredible architecture and mountains from a high vantage point which cost 200 Yen per person for the local bus. In terms of getting back down, we decided to walk which ended up being a great idea.

Walking around Shirakawago Village you notice houses, shops, rice paddies, and people out doing laundry. We visited in summer; however, every season offers a unique atmosphere in the village. Something fascinating is that cold drinks are refrigerated with mountain running water and trash is to be carried and disposed of by guests.

To cool down we grabbed our first bite which was a refreshing green-tea matcha ice cream for 350 Yen per person. Our next stop was the outdoor open-air museum (600 Yen per person), which ended up being one of our favorite attractions, visiting temples and crossing bridges along the way. We grabbed soba and tempura for lunch.

In the open air museum we visited waterfalls, streams and gassho houses. We ended up just hopping from farmhouse to farmhouse to call down enjoying some free tea along the way.

We visited the Old Fujisaki House where it was free and cool inside.

Shirakawago Travel Guide (白川郷) | Most Beautiful Place We Visited in Japan:

Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world. Our most recent trip was to Japan where we spent 2 months traveling around the country and visiting the following destinations: Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Nikko, Takayama, Yokohama, Odaiba, Shirakawa-gō and Takao.

During our stay, we visited a mixture of big cities and small rural towns, where we enjoyed eating Japanese street food, trying traditional Japanese cuisine, visiting local attractions and staying in unique accommodations (such as capsule hotels and ryokans) that we are now going to share with you on this channel. The combination and contrast of visiting futuristic cities and traditional countryside areas is what makes travel to Japan so fascinating. Ultra modern versus traditional. This is the essence of Japan.

Our trip to Japan was unforgettable and until now it is one of our favorite countries that we have come to know. However, we only feel as though we just scratched the surface on this trip to Japan. If you want to see more videos from Japan in the future, let us know in the comments that places you'd like us to travel to and food experiences you would like to see on this travel channel.

Have you traveled to Japan before? What was your experience like? Please share your Japan travel tips, advice and experiences in the comments below.

Japanese Town You Must Visit | Takayama

This video shows some of the highlights of visiting Takayama in Gifu prefecture, Japan. We visited Japan in spring of 2019 and stayed in an Airbnb in the historic district of Takayama Japan for three nights. Compared to the busy cities of Kyoto and Tokyo, Takayama was quiet, much less crowded and rivals other historic cities with its impressive old Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples and beautiful surrounding mountainous nature.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Places we mentioned in this video include:
- Hida folk village (Hida no Sato)
- Shinhotaka ropeway at Okuhida region
- Higashiyama walking course with numerous shrines and temples

Travel to Shirakawa-Go via Takayama in Winter Snow (Japan)

We travel to Shirakawa-Go via Takayama where non-reserved bus options are available (guide here: and by luck, given it is peak season in winter in Japan, we find two free seats for travel. Where one-way tickets cost only 3,400 Yen. After a 30-minute bus ride we arrive to the picturesque Shirakawa-go Unesco Village, which is famous for its unique winter housing, at around 14:50PM giving us just a 2-hour window before onward travel as our bus leaves (pre-booked) to Toyama, a quaint coastal town on the Sea of Japan. Fortunately we have been to Shirakawa-Go before in spring (full post on Shirakawa-Go in spring) and we are familiar with the layout and what we planned to see. So we circle the town twice, do a quick cross over the rope suspension bridge, and we rush to the viewpoint above the village for photography from above. And we are leaving again by 16:50PM

Travel to Japan #4 [SHIRAKAWA-GO & TAKAYAMA]

-Takayama signifie d'ailleurs littéralement haute montagne.

✨ 22 Nov → 04 Dec
It's our second trip to Japan, so we didn't visit some of the more obvious attractions in each area. It was still really fun and we particularly enjoyed the peaceful mountainside areas ~ Hope to be back again someday, especially to Kawaguchiko which we haven't toured fully!!

It's great to be out of cities and into the rural countryside of Japan. Today we visit Shiragawago and Ogimachi village with its steeply pitched thatched roofs. This region was almost cut off from the outside World until the 1950's. Here they used to harvest silkworms up in the attic of these Gassho- zukuri style houses.

It's a beautiful village in a stunning location surrounded by mountains. Typically for us, there's not much let up in the rain. But it doesn't dampen my picture taking too much!

Later its off to nearby Gokayama for Rice Paper making!

Road Trip Japan! Shirakawa-go - Jigokudani - Nagano - Matsumoto - Gero Onsen - Nara

Follow our Japan Travel adventures. Our road trips can serve as a Travel Guide in Japan and things to do while living or traveling in Japan. We live in the Japanese Countryside and enjoy visiting Temples and Shrines in Japan and collect a Goshuin Stamp after paying our respects. While traveling around Japan we enjoy an Onsen and Ryokans.

I am an American (of Mexican descent) living and working in Japan. My wife of 32 (plus) years is from Japan. We bought a vacant or empty house Akiya in the countryside of Japan near Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture for $35,000 (5 million Yen as of August 2022). The property consists of a 2-story house built in 1975, small guest house, large 2 car garage, storage building, and 3/4 acres of land with many fruit trees.

As very common when purchasing an Akiya in Japan, the personal belongings of the previous owner were still in the house. It took multiple trips to the local recycle center to dispose of all the property.

The grounds were overgrown with many weeds and vines. This will take a while to get under control, but it is looking much better around the property, and I think the neighbors are happy to see us cleaning up.

This traditional Japanese house also features a gorgeous Japanese Garden in much need of cleaning up and bringing it back to its glory. I am still working on the garden, but it already looks stunning under a beautiful maple tree and huge decorative stones.

We performed an extensive renovation in the entire house. We focused on keeping traditional Japanese features such as the engawa, shoji doors, ranma, shikkui, tatami room, but incorporated modern features making a very comfortable house for years to come. Walls, ceilings, floors were insulated. New modern kitchen, toilets and bathroom units were installed. We installed a wood burning cast iron stove (Quadra-Fire, Explorer II). New electrical throughout the entire house and guest house. Double pane windows and doors installed and much more.
