Top five movies: blockbusters filmed in Namibia, southern Africa

What are the top five movies filmed in Namibia, southern Africa? See our video.

#Top5Movies #Namibia #SouthernAfrica

Top 5 movies shot in Namibia:

10,000 BC (2008)

Namib Desert, Namibia
The production team of ‘10000 BC’ filmed a significant portion of the film in the Namib desert in Southern Africa to lense some pivotal sequences. Although the massive desert stretches for over 2,000 kilometers along the Atlantic coasts of Namibia, South Africa and Angola, it seems that the cast and crew members utilized the portion of the desert that is situated in Namibia.
In particular, they also taped several important scenes on the Spitzkoppe. It is a group of granite mountains located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib Desert of Namibia. The pyramids, God’s palace, miniature replicas of the pyramids, the slave quarters, and even the Nile River were all constructed by the production team in Namibia. As per reports, the buildings were built in Munich and then transported to Namibia via 15 different sea containers.

Beyond Borders (2003)

Beyond Borders is a 2003 American romantic-drama film about aid workers, directed by Martin Campbell and starring Angelina Jolie, Clive Owen, Teri Polo and Kate Ashfield. The original music score was composed by James Horner.
The Ethiopia part of the movie was shot in the Namib Desert behind the Rossing mountain, about 30 km outside of SwakopmUnd. A huge refugee camp was built there. Thousands of movie extras were employed for the film. Ethiopian officials complained that a movie starring Angelina Jolie being filmed in Namibia gives a biased portrayal of their country. Ethiopia lodged a complaint with the Namibian government, saying Beyond Borders only shows the 1984 drought and starvation in the country and none of the progress made since then.

Flight of the Phoenix (2004)

Flight of the Phoenix was filmed on location in the Namib Desert, and was released in the United States on December 17, 2004, by 20th Century Fox. The film was a box office failure, and received generally mixed reviews; criticism was geared toward its similarity to the 1965 film, while praise related to the acting, direction and visuals.
Director John Moore scouted locations in Morocco and Australia before looking at, and quickly choosing, Namibia as the crash site. Where most of the film takes place, was only a 20 minute-drive from the coastal town of Swakopmund. The Namib Desert location caused problems: cameras and other equipment had to be constantly cleaned of sand, and a couple of hundred people were employed as 'dune groomers' so that visual continuity could be maintained.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic action film co-written, co-produced, and directed by George Miller. Namibia’s desolate yet strikingly beautiful desert landscape provided the ideal dystopian setting for the latest installment in George Miller’s Mad Max saga. In a post-apocalyptic world, Max (Tom Hardy), his companion Furiosa (Charlize Theron), and her band of fellow fugitives unite to defeat a ruthless warlord who pursues the fleeing rebels across the scorching dunes in an explosive blockbuster.

The Mummy (2017)

Principal photography on the film began on April 3, 2016, in Oxford, United Kingdom. Pinewood Studios and Shepperton Studios were also used for production, with underwater scenes shot at Pinewood. Filming on the movie concluded on July 17, 2016, in London. Production then moved to Namibia for two weeks, with principal photography wrapping up on August 13, 2016.

WINDHOEK: One of the Cleanest Cities in AFRICA | 10 INTERESTING FACTS

The name ‘Windhoek’ is derived from Afrikaans meaning ‘windy corner’. Situated roughly in the center of the country, Windhoek is the largest and capital city of Namibia. This is an African country located on the Southwestern coast of Africa bordered by Angola to the North, Botswana to the East, Zambia to the Northeast, South Africa to the Southeast and South and Atlantic Ocean to the West. Windhoek is the social, political, economic and cultural center of Namibia. Its population in 2020 was 431,000 but is continually growing.

The tourist portal on the official city of Windhoek website reads; ’Windhoek is often described as one of the cleanest capitals in Africa and visitors are surprised that this city, considered to be part of deepest Africa, offers all modern amenities that conform to some of the world’s highest standards.”

When Windhoek was selected to host the Africities 2000 Summit, the Mayor of Windhoek at the time, Immanuel Ngatjizeko, positioned the city in terms of its “cleanliness” as an attribute setting Windhoek apart. It was regarded as a jewel to be jealously guarded. Its status as the “cleanest city in Africa” was peddled by City of Windhoek officials for a while until Kigali snatched the “crown” from Windhoek around 2015/2016. Arguably, this status did not come by chance, but was (and is) a result of an entrenched culture of cleanliness among people living in Windhoek.

Slogans such as ‘My Waste, My Responsibility’ have really helped. Windhoek still features among the top 10 cleanest cities in Africa, coming in at number 5 after Kigali, Tunis, Port Louis and Cape Town. In March of this year, city of Windhoek councilors embarked on a clean-up campaign to reclaim its former glory. This campaign is supported by various stakeholders like Rent-a-Drum, Shoprite Namibia, Plastic Packaging, Namibia Recycling Forum, Development workshops and learners from schools in the Garoeb/Moses constituency. If everyone else gets on board, great change will definitely be observed in the city.

The National Botanic Garden of Namibia (NBGN)is situated on a hill between Klein Windhoek and the city center of Windhoek. This is the only botanic garden in the country. It is one of five subsections within the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) and is administered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Forestry. The mission of the Garden is to protect and promote the Namibian flora while functioning as a research, educational and recreational facility for Namibians and tourists as well.

The estate is about 12 hectares big. The larger part of the area is unlandscaped and serves as a study area for local students. A number of walking trails lead through the Garden where the most common woody plants are clearly labeled. Bird and plant lists are available at the reception. You’ll see the desert house, rockery and nursery house which are a comprehensive collection of Namibian succulents, many of which are rare and endangered.

The garden also claims to have one of the densest areas of the Windhoek Aloe. In the early 1970s a forest of quiver trees and bottle trees was planted and today, this forest is well worth the visit. Early in the year, after good rains, you can admire some of the garden lilies flowering along the Lily Walk. The garden is also home to a variety of insects, birds, reptiles and mammals. The picnic area provides the perfect spot to end your visit as you relax in the tranquil atmosphere of the garden.

The Gardens are open from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every first Saturday of the month from 8 to 11 a.m. Entrance is free, save for the weekends. Just don’t litter, don’t damage any plant or plant materials and stay on the marked trails.

With the rapidly growing population of Windhoek and increased investment and development of the city, there was increased pressure on the supply of water. In 1968, the municipality built the plant making Windhoek the first city in the world to produce its own drinking water from wastewater. In 2002, the city built a new DPR plant next to the original one which is still in operation but only producing water for irrigation.

The Goreangab plant is often referred to as ‘the cradle of water reclamation’ and is believed to be the world's only pipe to pipe DPR facility. It produces purified water for over 400,000 city residents. This water is not treated again at conventional water treatment plants but goes directly into the distribution system. It is reported that no illnesses have plagued the city due to this purification system.

Namibia Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Namibia.
Windhoek is the flourishing capital of Namibia and it is from here that we begin a journey through this country and experience some of the magic of the Dark Continent on a luxurious train - the Desert Express!Dating back to colonial times, the Christ Church is a reminder of the end of hostilities between the Germans and the indigenous population during the period when it was known as ‘German West Africa’, and indeed German influence in this part of the world is still very much in evidence today. A short journey leads into the isolated loneliness of the prairie and to lion feeding at the Okapuka Ranch in which an Austrian keeps lions in their natural environment. A popular holiday resort on the mouth of the River Swakop and the final destination of the rail journey, Swakopumund, through whose harbour everything that was used in German West Africa was transported, resulting in a regular trading route between Swakopmund and Hamburg for more than ten years - a hint of Germany on the edge of the desert! In Swakopumund there are architectural treasures that were rented out in the days of the Kaiser and are reminiscent of various houses in Berlin. This is a part of Germany that no longer exists in Germany itself. Moon Valley is bizarre and extra-terrestrial and for millions of years it has withstood the erosive power of the Swakop. With its deep-cut valleys and no vegetation in sight, the endless rocky landscape seems unfriendly, life threatening and impassable. Namutoni Camp is situated in the centre of the Etosha National Park and has a history that dates back to 1851. Thirsty antelopes and zebras rendezvous at a watering hole while a herd of elephants drink at another. Namibia is, quite rightly, a much sought after tourist destination. White deserts, wild animals, mountains strewn with ravines, and white beaches - Africa’s south west is full of more than a few colourful surprises!

10 Africa Destinations You Must Visit Before You Die | NC Top 10 | News Central TV

If you’re an explorer and you haven’t been to these destinations in Africa, then you really should not call yourself an explorer.

Few life experiences compare to travelling and seeing the amazing wonders of nature. There's serenity and bliss that can’t be explained without experience. I’m not talking about anything gotten from just psychedelics, I mean travelling to the most amazing destinations in Africa. If you’re planning to experience this, here’s a list of 10 destinations that must be on your list.

10: Blyde River Canyon, South Africa
The Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world, with deep gorges that were cut by running water over 3000 years ago. This mystery is cloaked in beauty and glory.

9: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
Next up is the home of Simba! You’ll get an immersive Lion King experience at Serengeti National Park. There’s more than enough here to make you fall in love with Africa! The Park offers a beautiful blend of blue skies, green vegetation and wildlife.

8: Etosha National Park, Namibia
Etosha National Park is the only destination on the list that is identifiable from space. Well, it’s a tourist destination, not a hideaway, and I guess you didn’t offend the Russians, so you shouldn’t be bothered.

7: La Digue, Seychelles
When it comes to nature’s best-kept secrets, Africa is definitely the home! Our next destination is a beauty to behold. La Digue is one of 115 islands in Seychelles and it has arguably the most beautiful landscapes in the world!

6: Siemens National Park, Ethiopia

The next is ስሜን ተራሮች
Don’t get confused. That’s Amharic for Semien, where our next destination is found. The Semien Mountain National Park is home to Ethiopia’s highest point, the Ras Dashan.

5: Yankari National Park, Nigeria

Our next destination is in Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria! The Yankari game reserve is an intriguing expanse of land with signs of historic human settlements. Yankari has four warm springs, over 130 wells and underground caves that feature early rock paintings.

4: Kruger National Park, South Africa

From one African giant to another, we swing down south to South Africa. This time, it’s the Kruger National Park, described as South Africa’s most exciting safari destination. Kruger is home to Africa’s big five; Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo

3: Djemaa el Fna, Morocco

Our next destination is Morocco. Now everyone needs to visit Marrakech and you can’t leave without experiencing Djemaa el Fna at night! Whoever said the night was for sleeping has never been to Djemaa el Fna.

2: Victoria Falls, Zambia/Zimbabwe
I can use all the words I know to describe this place but it still won’t match the experience. It’s Mosi-oa-Tunya, loosely translated to English as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ but popularly called Victoria Falls.

Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

This is arguably the most iconic destination in Africa! The pyramids of Giza are a window into an intriguing part of Africa’s history. The tombs of these 3 Pharaohs is more popular than the seat of power for most modern presidents and attract more visitors than.

Where cold Atlantic Ocean meets hot Namib Desert in Namibia, southern Africa-2

Video of Namib Desert and Atlantic West Coast of Namibia - where hot winds meet cold ocean waters in southern Africa.

#AtlanticOceanMeetsDesert #TravelNamibia #SafariSouthernAfrica

Skeleton Coast:

The coastal desert of Namibia is located along Africa’s Atlantic coast towards the south-west. The high sand dunes of Namib Desert and the point where the desert meets the sea are the key attractions of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, there is more to it than what is known. Below, check out the key facts about this amazing destination.
Do you know that the Namib Desert is one of the driest destinations on the planet? Its Mars-like landscape features nothing except high sand dunes, barren mountains and gravel plains extending to about 81000 sq km across three nations.
Namib Desert is believed to be as old as 55 million years; thus, it is the oldest desert in the world.
Summer temperature at this desert often reaches 45 degree Celsius and night-time temperature can be as low as below freezing.
A desert that meets the sea: Namib Desert and Atlantic Ocean.
Apparently, Namib Desert is not suitable for human inhabitation. Nonetheless, a number of living beings such as ostriches, antelopes, rodents and birds have managed to adapt to this desert.
Interestingly, the geomorphic phenomenon created in Namib Desert, called fairy circles, has intrigued many researchers and scientists across the globe. Also called fairy rings, these are barren patches of sand encircled by grass of a single variety. Many researchers believe that the fairy circles could be the result of alien activity in this region, though there is no evidence that proves it.
Namib gets its water supply from fog, which means the reptiles and mammals living in the desert area have developed a survival mechanism to live with less water consumption.

The sand dunes of Sossusvlei area in the Namib region are also called star dunes. Due to the wind approaching from all directions, the sand dunes are formed in star-like shape, and consequently, they are quite immovable.
The sand in the desert gets its reddish colour from the layer of iron oxide covering it.
The colour of sand is different across the desert. Towards the inland, the sand looks pinkish in colour, while it is whiter near the sea.
During an unusually heavy monsoon season, Tsauchab River flows to the pan and tourists from all over the world visit this place to witness the sight.

The Living Museum of the Ju/'Hoansi-San Bushmen in Omatako, Namibia, southern Africa

Video of the Living Museum of the JuHoansi-San located in the northern Namibia near Omatako, southern Africa.

#JuHoansiBushmenLivingMuseum #OmatakoNamibia #TravelSouthernAfrica

Tsumkwe:

The Living Museum of the Ju/'Hoansi-San
The Living Museum of the Ju/'Hoansi-San is the first Living Museum of Namibia. It is a cultural highlight in Namibia as well as a good example for a sustainable development.

The presentation of traditional San-culture
The Living Museum of the Ju/'Hoansi-San gives visitors an interesting insight into the life of the friendly San. The Living Museum is an authentic open-air museum where guests can learn a lot about the traditional culture and the original way of living of the San. The Ju/'Hoansi bushmen demonstrate and describe everything with great dedication and the guide translates into english. Almost every offered program is interactive, because it is also great fun for the Ju/'Hoansi when the visitors try to shoot an arrow, experience the special Ju/'Hoansi rope skipping or try to sing a an original song.

You won't forget a visit of the Living Museum.

Traditional culture
The Living Museum of the Ju/'Hoansi-San was initiated by the Namibian tour guide Werner Pfeifer and the teacher Ghau N!aici from Grashoek. Since July 2004 the ju/'Hoansi run their museum completely on their own. The Living Museum - the Ju/'Hoansi call it /Xao-o Ju/'Hoansi-Ga (the life of the Ju/'Hoansi) - consists of several huts, but actually this is only the surrounding of the open-air Museum: the San focus on showing their original lifestyle. They present the old, almost forgotten culture in traditional dresses in the midst of their reconstructed nomad-village from the ancient days. The San of the Living Museum set a high value on presenting the hunter-gatherer culture as authentic as possible.

Campsite
Under the shades of majestic Mangetti trees right next to the Living Museum you will find a beautiful camp site. Three sites are available, each with a dry toilet, bucket shower and braai facilities. Water and firewood is available.

#ZambeziQueen #Namibia #Chobe

The Zambezi Queen Collection comprises of a fleet of houseboats, operating on the Chobe River, within the wildlife rich Chobe National Park that borders Namibia and Botswana. The trademark of the Zambezi Queen Collection is the luxury houseboat Zambezi Queen and her 3 Chobe Princesses.

Experience unique holidays, comfort and an extraordinary view of the wildlife that find sanctuary in the Chobe National Park in Botswana. Feel completely recharged as you embark on a soul-stirring adventure down the Chobe River, the perfect vantage point from which to watch an astounding array of bird and animal species.

Boarding one of our deluxe houseboats, you will be immersed in this extraordinary wilderness, whilst enjoying all the comforts of an exclusive boutique hotel.

Moving along the banks of the great Chobe River, the Zambezi Queen is a 42-metre long luxury houseboat offering unparalleled sophistication in one of the most remote locations on the planet. The Zambezi Queen navigates up to 25 km of the Chobe River, allowing guests to explore different vantage points and enjoy authentic game viewing in complete comfort and elegance.

The Zambezi Queen offers luxury accommodation in the form of 14 tasteful and luxurious suites – ten suites and four luxury suites, all with outer decks so you can soak up the revitalising Chobe River breeze and appreciate uninterrupted views of the unique African landscape beyond.

The suites on the Zambezi Queen features stylish interiors, air conditioning and spectacular panoramic views with your own private balcony. On the top deck you are transported to a sophisticated leisurely space with a separate dining area, bar, rear viewing deck, intimate lounge and a large front deck with loungers and plunge pool.

It’s the kind where you get to decide if you want to be up with the birds, or prefer to laze all morning watching game from the comfort of your bed. Our itinerary is flexible so while we have a range of activities on offer, you can choose just how much you want to pack into your holiday or how relaxed you want to be.

Don’t think of your time on Zambezi Queen as a river cruise. Instead, think of it as a floating boutique hotel that departs and returns to the same point, navigating roughly 25 km of the Chobe River weather permitting. You’ll first arrive at the Zambezi Queen via a short tender boat ride from the Kasane Immigration Office. We offer staggered transfer times on the hour between 13:00 and 16:00, so you can arrive at your own pace and don’t have to worry about missing the boat.

Let us take you on a uniquely African adventure with uninterrupted views of the Chobe National Park, home to over 120 000 elephants and more incredible wildlife.

The Zambezi Queen sails on scheduled weekly departures every Monday (two-nights or four-nights), Wednesday (two-nights) and Friday (three-nights).

Solitaire fuel station in the Namib Desert, Namibia, southern Africa

Video of short stop at Solitaire in 2021, on the way to Walvis Bay, Namibia, southern Africa.

#Solitaire #Namibia #NamibDesert

Solitaire, Namibia:

Solitaire
This remote settlement, at the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, has been a welcome stopover for more than 60 years. A thirsty traveler will find cold drinks, ice cream, baked goods, coffee and lunch. You can fill up on petrol, have tyres repaired, and stretch your legs during the long drive from Sesriem to Swakopmund. There are also 2 popular lodges for overnight guests.

The Namib-Naukluft area includes Kuiseb Canyon, spectacular Spreetshoogte Pass and Namibia’s Sossusvlei dunes. One can explore thousands of acres of Namib desert, grasslands, and rocky foothills on mapped hiking trails, fat tire bikes and scenic drives.

Solitaire sits just below the Tropic of Capricorn at the center of the 45,000 acre Solitaire Land Trust, dedicated to preserving the grassland ecosystem and the wild animals that reside here. Land Trust holdings reach from the base of the Great African Escarpment to the Namib, the oldest desert in the world.

Solitaire Services
Enjoy fresh baked goods and espresso, our famous apple pie, plus take-away sandwiches and cold drinks from McGregor's Bakery.

We're open daily for outdoor lunch and dinner at Cafe van der Lee, serving burgers, salads, fresh pizza, fish & chips, and specials with cold draft beer and fine South African wines.

You'll find ice, snacks, water, sodas, beer, and a nice selection of wine from the western Cape in the Tsondab General Dealer. Plus sunscreen, hats & t-shirts, an ATM and phone recharge time.

The Namib Desert is hard on automobiles. Solitaire sells petrol and diesel, and provides tyre repair and sales, oil and miscellaneous fixes. It’s the only petrol stop between Sossusvlei and Swakopmund.

In 1948 Willem Christoffel van Coller bought 33,000 hectares of land from the South West Administration (the government of Namibia at the time) for the purpose of farming Karakul sheep. The land was previously an undeveloped area called Areb situated between the Ababis region to the South and the Koireb region to the North.

The area was named Solitaire by Elsie Sophia van Coller (wife of Willem Christoffel van Coller). The name was chosen because of two meanings. Solitaire can mean a single set diamond and Solitaire can also mean solitude or loneliness. Combined these two meanings create the definition of being unique or one-of-a-kind and a precious but solitary place.

The first man-made structure on the Solitaire farm was a 2-room cottage constructed by Mr. Van Coller who also later constructed the main farm house, a stone kraal adjacent to the farmhouse and a dam wall across the river bed. Later he was also responsible for constructing the current shop and installing the first petrol pump. The shop also acted as the regional post office where weekly postbags were delivered. In 1948, construction of a small chapel was started; it was completed in 1951. The small Dutch-Reformed church is still in use by the local congregation. The church building is also used as a community meeting place, holding Farmer's Union meetings, elections, and health clinics. In 1968 the farm 'Solitaire' was sold to a Mr. Maritz, and has since gone through numerous owners. The two farms that make up Solitaire, the businesses, and other area land holdings, are now part of the 45,000 acre Solitaire Land Trust,[3] which is focused on habitat preservation. This semi-arid region, frequented by drought, is home to healthy populations of wildlife, including the endemic Hartmann's mountain zebra. Farm Solitaire starts at the Great African Escarpment, an important watershed.

Popular Andy's Pub & Restaurant - Klein Windhoek, Windhoek, Namibia, southern Africa

Video report of Andy's Pub outing - a very popular iconic bar and restaurant located in Klein Windhoek (Sam Nujoma Avenue), Windhoek, Namibia, southern Africa. Part 3 of 3.

#GermanBar #Windhoek #NamibiaCuisine

Windhoek:

Andy's Pub is one of the most popular German Pubs in Windhoek with great food and drinks to choose from. Come join us and feel the experience!

Yummy, relaxed, funny.

Andy’s Pub & Restaurant is a European bistro in the capital of Namibia offering everything from Pizza, Schnitzel, Steaks to famous German dishes such as home made Curry Wurst in a comfortable pub atmosphere. Andy’s pub is probably the most famous German Pub in Windhoek with two beer gardens and is said to be the perfect place to watch sports on one of the several big LED TV’s mounted on the walls throughout the pub.

Address 318 Sam Nujoma Drive, Klein Windhoek, Namibia.

Categories: German Restaurant, Sports Bar, Beer Bar.

Local Experience
This is the place to go if you want to feel part of the locals in Windhoek. The service is very laid back but it is only a bad thing if you are in a hurry. Therefore go with an open mind and enjoy the atmosphere. The bar is small and intimate. A bar in the full sense of the word if you take into account that people can smoke in here. The interior is crazy full with very interesting mementos especially car license plates. They are famous for their pizza and curried sausage with chips. Don’t expect French cuisine. The beer is very popular. Enjoy it with a soccer or rugby game on the TV and you will have a real Namibian local experience.

Great Pizza and Curried Sausage
Andy’s is an eclectic mix of characters and loyal supporters that frequent this little pub in Klein Windhoek. Andy’s is a larger than life sort of publican – that serves the best pizza and curried sausage and chips in Windhoek. The food is quick, the beers are cold and the price is great.

Great place - Excellent Food - Bad Misconceptions.
If you are coming to Andy's because you want specifically a meal, please perform this during the earlier hours as the pub gets crowded very quickly which causes delays in service. But that is expected as This establishment is more of a bar then a restaurant and the focus is on sitting with your friends, enjoying drinks and good conversations. The opinions of the other commenters were that they would walk in, receive a meal quickly, eat and have some drinks. That is not what this establishment is about. It is a Beer Garden in the typical German sense. You come to drink, if you want food, order but you are there for the atmosphere, not the haste service.
If you want quick, good food with a nice atmosphere, go to Sardinia's, however if you want arguable the best pizza in town come to Andy's. Just plan to sit down, have a few drinks with friends and be patient. Even in the most crowded of situations, a pizza will take 45 minutes to an hour, enough time to take down a couple pints with your guests and relax.
Andy's has some of the best food in town at great prices but be aware, this is no Nando's with 15 minute service. Come for the beers, cheers and if you want food, order it upfront when you get your drinks, just please, no more tears.

Nice bar to hang out
A funny bar where you don't find too many tourists. It's a nice place to have some beers, watch football and to have fun. The service must have improved. In general the waitresses and waiters are attentive. I like the ribs there.
