NAGALAND - DZULEKE & KHONOMA | Travelling in North-East India | Indian Travel vlogs

Welcome To Nagaland! (2/3) DZULEKE & KHONOMA - The villages in Nagaland.

I visited Nagaland in the month of April and had the opportunity to open my mind to endless experiences! For the longest time, Nagaland and the whole of North East has been so neglected: tourism wise and also culturally :(. So I took the plunge to discover the beautiful state myself, with two other creators- Tanya Khanijow & Namrata Menon. These girls have been the most lovely to travel with :)
This is Part 2 of the Nagaland series #TakeMeToNagaland! there are 3 in total! please watch part 1 because it's super fun and features the cities - Dimapur & Kohima ( the capital of Nagaland)

????????Things to remember when you plan your travel:????????

????Dzuleke has a total of ONLY 5 homestays. You have to book your stay in advance because you do not want to be stranded in the village with no roof. Try the homestay I stayed in, or Anisie Homestay on Airbnb.

????There is absolutely no internet or phone signal in Dzuleke. LOVELY!

????You need an ILP-(Inner Line Permit) to enter the state of Nagaland. You can apply here—

????Commute in the city is pretty straightforward. You can use the local rickshaws, or hire a car to go around. The roads are super bumpy especially in Dimapur & Kohima, so be prepared :D

????The food scene is very much different than mainland. Vegetarians options are available, but make sure you mention you’re vegetarian since they also tend to cook their veggies in pork fat. Nagaland thrives on pork and beef, and a lot of things you don’t see in the rest of the country. I suggest that you visit with an open mind, else it will be super difficult to survive. I personally loved the food. :D

????Make sure you have enough cash on you. It’s advisable to carry cash from home since it was even hard to find ATMs.

????Homestays are the best way to experience the local living. Since the people are super friendly, the hosts are lovely to interact with and know so many things about the Naga culture.

????Do a lot of research before you visit. The state has 16 different tribes and they speak different dialects. Read about their lifestyle and food.

????Carry your rainwear and warm clothes since the weather is pretty unpredictable. The best time to travel according to me is December (for Hornbill festival ) and also April.

????Nagaland is a dry state! :P

????Nagaland is a state full of beauty and the nicest people I've ever come across. The misconceptions about this magic land are hilarious! So do not believe anything else you hear about this place. We stayed here for 10 days and had no issues, problems at all! Trust me! Your next travel, must be planned for the north-east especially NAGALANDDD!

????Also, thanks to Tanya and Namrata, for helping me film so many shots!

Life in Naga Villages & Kohima | Backpacking in Nagaland, North East India-Jakhama, Khonoma, Dzuleke

Naga Villages are the gold mine to understand the life of Naga tribes. I visited villages like Jakhama, Khonoma (Asia's first green village), Kigwema, Kisama, Dzuleke (community tourism) and met the Agami tribe apart from seeing the modern version of their lifestyle in Kohima.
In Kohima city, I went to Nagaland state museum, Kohima War Cemetery and Kohima Cathedral Church. All throughout this, it was an attempt at completing my one-month backpacking trip in North East India.

►Check Out 'FINDERBRIDGE' here. I did Dzukou Valley trek with them.

The Episode is the last from the series called #ThisIsNagaland
After this, I moved to Arunachal Pradesh later to complete my month-long Solo Backpacking Trip and attend Ziro Music Festival as well.

Welcome to DZUKOU VALLEY: Most Unique Place in India! || Exploring Nagaland || Ep. 2

Learn how to save $$ on EVERY trip!!:

#nagaland #travelAMore #dzukouvalley #magical

———————————————————————————
You may argue that there are “more beautiful” locations in India, but to me, this is the MOST BEAUTIFUL place in India!! Let me tell you why ????????

After having an amazing time exploring the Dzuleke village, we headed to the campsite in Zakhama where we begin the trek to the MAGICAL Dzukou valley!!????

On that trek I realised what it means to feel truly ALIVE.

I hiked on that serene and beautiful trail with no one in sight and lunched in the middle of the hills and all I could hear was the wind whistling in calmness.
At our humble stay for the night, I cut wood for fire and sat with strangers who decided to let go of their inhibitions and light up the kitchen with some dance & music.
And then with groggy eyes, I woke up at 4:30am to see what turned out to be the BEST sunrise that made the moonlike landscape sparkle - I FELT FCKN ALIVE!

Definitely 1000% worth it.

Sometimes you need to break away from the matrix of the city, the office, the comfortable home to feel this way. It’s a natural high!
So grateful for Chalohoppo for making me experience MAGIC✨
Big shoutout to Aphre! Her campsite is the FIRST and BEST place to stay for your trek to Dzukou. It’s super cozy, comfortable with the cleanest washrooms????

Nagaland is mesmerising and you guys have to watch this series as I uncover it all for you.
Please subscribe and press the ???? icon, I’ll see you in the next one!

If you’re planning a trip to the north-east of India, I’d really recommend going through ChaloHoppo. They provide customised itineraries, group tours and even day experiences.

????????Things to remember when you plan your travel:????????

????The Visvema route (the one I took) is much easier compared to the Jakhama route.

????You can camp the previous night at Campsite Yedika just like I did, before you trek to the valley.

????Drones are not allowed in the valley (we had special permissions to use them)

????You can get in touch with @tirelessfoot_nicholas on Instagram, incase you're interested to trek to the valley. He's a good buddy, and will help you in the best way

????Entry to the valley is INR 20/- only

????Carry your sleeping bags and down jackets cuz it's super windy and extremely cold at night. I went in the month of April and it was super cold.

????The best option would be to trek early in the morning and reach the dormitory by or before 2pm.

????DO NOT trek to Dzukou without a local guide.

????You need an ILP-(Inner Line Permit) to enter the state of Nagaland. You can apply here—

Nagaland | Dzuleke & Khonoma Village | Less explored villages of Nagaland

Hello Dear Friends,
We hope that you enjoyed last three episodes of our Kohima trip. Now with this video, our Kohima series comes to an end.
In this video, you will see our journey from Kohima to Dzuleke village and #Khonoma Village.

The road was under construction from Kohima to Peren town. On this road, first comes Khonoma Village 20 km from Kohima and then comes Dzuleke village 40 km away from kohima.
First we went straight to Dzuleke and while returning we covered Khonoma.

Let's talk about these two villages.

Dzuleke: This small village has 30-35 homes; located around 40 km away from Kohima but due to maintenance of the road this journey takes around 2 hours by car. This village is damn beautiful and the route is mesmerizing. You can experience the beauty of various grassland enroute to Dzuleke.

People come here to stay or for picnic #dzuleke has 4 to 5 Homestay options, no hotel is available. People here are welcoming and loving.

We spent around 2 hours here but I will suggest you to stay for one night in this serene village.
Hunting, gathering forest products or any other act against nature is strictly prohibited.

Khonoma Village: This village is just 20 km away from #kohima and comes before Dzuleke. Khonoma is India's first Green village as hunting and harming nature is completely banned here. During our visit to this village we experienced real Nagaland and came to know about many local customs which were unknown to us in the first two days of our trip.
This village is located on a small hill in a circular shape, the paddy and other crop fields will take your breath away as it looks so beautiful.
Khonoma is known as the only village which didn't surrender to Britishers during their North East evasion.

We started our day at 7 am and finished these two villages by 2 pm, as we were in a little hurry, otherwise one full day is enough.

For these two villages we hired one Local boy(guide):Kevin
He is from Khonoma village only, He works as a guide in Nagaland and he came out as an informative asset to us on this day.

Kevin's contact number : +91 93832 35007 as he remains on various trips, his mobile may not connect every time, you can drop him a msg too. He has vast experience of local places.

This is KHONOMA- Asia’s FIRST Green Village! || Exploring Nagaland || Ep. 1

Learn how to save $$ on EVERY trip!!:

#khonoma #nagaland #greenvillage #northeast #travelAMore
———————————————————————————
Here I am in Nagaland and this vlog is about the FIRST green village of India - KHONOMA!

I spent my day walking around and exploring this beautiful sustainable eco-village of Khonoma. And can you believe that this same village used to be a Hunter’s village?!

In earlier times, the main livelihood of the people here came from hunting and animal trade but the village collectively decided to change their ways to save the environment. All the Hunters are now forest rangers and their main livelihood now is organic farming!

I visited the garlic fields, local houses and the Khonoma Fort; tried one of the SPICIEST chillies of the world which is grown here in Nagaland; ate some of the sweet dried apples too; explored a tiny waterfall in Dzuleke and visited the very FIRST self-payment shop I have ever seen!

It amazes me that there is so much trust within the community to take care of their homeland and their neighbours. The part that I LOVED the most is that each house here uses fruits trees and flower plants to decorate their surroundings instead of artificial materials.

This definitely was a beautiful day for me and I can’t wait to show you guys all the other MAGICAL experiences that Nagaland has to offer!!

I FELL IN LOVE WITH KHONOMA VILLAGE | NAGALAND WEB SERIES - Ep 2 | Exploring North East India

Music I use - Subscribe FOR FREE 1 MONTH TRIAL

This is Part 2 from my Nagaland web series where I had explored this beautiful small village with only 35 houses and we also visited khonoma village.
Watch the complete web series here -

Dzuleke, in Nagaland, is unique. Not only for its flora and fauna but also because this hunting village has banned hunting to protect wildlife.
Sotuno lives in the village of Dzuleke about 40 km from Kohima in Nagaland. The village gets its name from the river Dzuleke that, during its course, goes underground once it reaches Dzuleke. ‘Dzu’ means water and ‘leke’ means underground in the local language. This is an Angami (one of the major tribes in Nagaland) village. In this small village of 200 households, everyone is known to each other.

My trip to Nagaland from December 4 to December 10, 2018 was organized by ChaloHoppo, a travel company that specializes in crafting authentic local experiences in Northeast India. During this trip, I stayed at Camp Yedikha in Jakhama village. ( ) and visited the villages of Dzuleke and Khonoma. This experience was raw and nothing like anything I have experienced before.

It is the first green village in India.
From 1830 to 1880, Angami Naga warriors from Khonoma fought a series of fierce battles against the British to stop them from force recruiting Nagas as bonded labourers. On 13 October 1879, Guybon Henry Damant, a political officer of the Naga Hills, led a troop of 87 British soldiers to Khonoma to enforce a tax and the British recruitment of bonded labour. The British troop was ambushed by the Angami warriors on 14 October and in the ensuing battle, 27 British including Damant were killed.
Thereafter, the British called in reinforcements and laid siege to the tiny village. After holding out for four months, a peace treaty was eventually signed with the British on 27 March 1880. Known as the 'Battle of Khonoma' this was the last organised resistance by the Nagas against the British.
In 1890, the British introduced Christianity, and over a period of time, most of the villagers became Christians.
The terrain of the village is hilly, ranging from gentle slopes to steep and rugged hillsides. The hills are covered with lush forestland, rich in various species of flora and fauna. The state bird, Blyth's tragopan, a pheasant now nationally endangered, is found here.
Khonoma is a medium size village located in Sechü Zubza sub-division of Kohima District, Nagaland with total 424 families residing. The Khonoma village has population of 1943 of which 919 are males while 1024 are females as per Population Census 2011.
The village is divided into three clans (thinuos), namely Merhü-ma (M-Khel), Semo-ma (S-Khel) and Thevo-ma (T-Khel).
Khonoma village has higher literacy rate compared to Nagaland. In 2011, literacy rate of Khonoma village was 83.41% compared to 79.55% of Nagaland. In Khonoma Male literacy stands at 93.72% while female literacy rate was 74.19%.
In 1998, alarmed after 300 endangered Blyth's tragopans (Tragopan blythii) were killed by the villagers in one week as part of a hunting competition, the village council demarcated a 20 sq km area within which hunting was banned and the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS) was created. In 2005, due to the successful conservation efforts of the village, the village was named India's first green village.
