Myanmar's MOST DANGEROUS Pagoda?! | How To Get to GOLDEN ROCK (Is It Worth It?) ????????

The Kyaiktiyo Pagoda aka the Golden Rock is Myanmar’s most surreal landmark. A giant bolder resting on a steep cliff edge - seemingly defying the laws of gravity! We visited during Thadingyut Festival (the Myanmar Festival of Lights) where thousands of candles are lit underneath the pagoda - a truly UNMISSABLE experience!

Although it’s an important buddhist pilgrimage, the pagoda isn’t often visited by foreign tourists. So how do you get to Golden Rock from Yangon? And is it really worth it? In this travel guide, we give a foreigner's first impressions of Kyaiktiyo and the Thadingyut festival itself.

EVERYTHING FEATURED IN THIS FILM:

0:00 - What is the Golden Rock Pagoda?
Some background on one of the most mystical sights in Myanmar and the legend that surrounds it.

0:55 - How to get to Kin Pun: Base camp for the Golden Rock
We took a bus from Yangon bus station to Kin Pun: a bustling market town at the base of the mountain.

1:50 - Getting up the mountain
From Kin Pun you need to take a special truck up to the rock. Not for the feint of heart!

3:18 - Golden Rock Myanmar Hotel. Where to stay at Kyaiktiyo Pagoda?
We stayed on the mountaintop at an expensive, but pretty nice hotel called Kayak Hto. We booked though booking.com and it cost us £65 for one night. This was a slightly higher price due to the festival, but worth it for the short walk to the pagoda!

4:07 - You can also camp at the Golden Rock!
And it’s free! As far as I can tell, you just have to pay an entrance fee.

4:25 - First impressions of the Golden Rock
Walking up to the temple and paying for entry. My thoughts on seeing the rock for the first time.

7:05 - Sunset at the Golden Rock
The best time to see the pagoda. This is also when the festival started.

7:25 - Thadingyut Festival at the Golden Rock
The lights under the rock at night - incredible!

8:30 - Sunrise at the Golden Rock
We woke up at 5am for this…

9:15 - The journey down the mountain
Worse than the way up! I also give my final thoughts on our whole experience.

Golden Rock, Myanmar [Amazing Places 4K]

The Golden Rock is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Myanmar. The huge bolder, covered with golden leaf, is balancing on the edge of a rock since antiquity. Small pagoda (Kyaiktiyo Pagoda - 7 meters/24 ft) is built on top of the boulder. The site is at elevation of 1,100 metres / 3,600 ft.
In the video: views of the rock and the Buddhist pilgrims at sunrise, sunset and after dark.

Bagan Temples are CLOSING... This is Why! (Myanmar HONEST Review) ????????

The iconic Bagan temples in Myanmar are a must see for any world traveller. But what is Bagan REALLY like to visit in 2020?

The experience of exploring the ruined temples is not what it used to be. Climbing temples to find rooftop views is becoming a thing of the past, with most temples now locked up and restricted to tourists.

But can you still find temples in Bagan with rooftop viewpoints? And should you STILL visit Bagan? We spent 3 days exploring the plains to find out.

Should you visit Myanmar? South East Asia’s most controversial country has faced tourism boycotts over the last few years, but what is it really like to visit? We headed to the capital city of Yangon to find out.

Our Yangon city tour led us to stunning Pagodas, beautiful public parks and some more off the beaten track areas - including a rural township called Dalla.

You can book a tour with HTOO HTOO here:

The most beautiful public park in the city is home to a massive lake.

5:12 - MAHA BANDULA PARK
The most lively spot in the city for mingling with the friendly locals, very close to most of the city’s most popular sights.

5:38 - MEETING A LOCAL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Htoo Htoo approached us and ended up shaping the rest of our time in Yangon.

Kyaiktiyo - the GRAVITY DEFYING Golden Rock Pagoda | Myanmar Travel Guide | What to do in Yangon

Kyaiktiyo, also known as the Golden Rock Pagoda, is a small pagoda sitting on a giant golden boulder perched precariously at the edge of a cliff, seemingly defying gravity. Legend says that the golden rock is held by a strand of Buddha’s hair, which is why Kyaiktiyo is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Myanmar along with Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and Mahamuni Pagoda in Mandalay. Its golden colour comes from hundreds of years of golden leaves pasted on by male pilgrims who come from all over the country, where ride up to the top of the mountain is just as much of an adventure in itself!

Looking for a convenient and informative tour around Yangon? Check out this Private Yangon Highlights Tour by Klook!

Not many people go to Myanmar in the first place, so there is even less information available for a remote place such as Kyaiktiyo. It is more than 200km away from Yangon, the capital of Myanmar and is not an easy place to get to if you're not a local! Luckily I've created this detailed guide for a day trip for you so you can visit this magical place as well!

One day Kyaiktiyo itinerary
• 3:50 am – wake up (yes I know this absolutely sucks)
• 4:00 am – picked up by my taxi driver (arrange this in advance, don’t count on taxis to be around the streets at 4 am in the morning!)
• 4:45 am – arrive at Aung Mingalar Bus Station. This is the long distance bus terminal in Yangon, it’s pretty big and confusing so ask your taxi driver to drop you off at the Win Express terminal, which runs direct buses to Kinpun
• 5:30 am – first Win Express bus to Kinpun leaves, you book tickets online at
• 9:00 am – arrive in Kinpun village, buy a return ticket right away at the bus stop (runs regularly between 2pm and 5pm), get some breakfast and head to the pickup truck terminal located behind the KFC and line up (yes there’s a KFC in this village!)
• 9:45 am – get in the pickup truck, go for the “window” seat for best views!
• 10:30 am – arrive at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo, there’s a bit more uphill to go
• 11:00 am – arrive at the Golden Rock Pagoda, I think 2 hours is enough at the top
• 1:00 pm – take the pickup truck back down in time for 2 pm bus back to Yangon
• 7:30 pm – arrive back in Yangon, the return journey takes longer as there is traffic and it includes a stop for dinner

Locations visited:
Aung Mingalar Bus Station –
Kinpun Truck Station –
Kyaiktiyo –

[Year 2002!] The Golden Rock with the Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda

With a lottery in a holy area.

One of the most sacred places in Myanmar, the Kyaik-htiyo-pagoda is situated on the top of the Golden Rock, 1.100 m above Kyaikto in the Mon-state, approximately 60 km E of Bago.

The golden rock is a large boulder of granite, which is supported by an extremely small area of contact with the rock beneath. It seems to be just before falling down, but it has been lying there for hundreds of years already. The pagoda upon it is erected upon one hair of the Lord Buddha.

Kyaik-htiyo means pagoda upon an hermit's head.

Kyaik Htee Yoe Pagoda- Myanmar

Mount Kyaiktiyo (Kyite Htee Yoe), famous for the huge golden rock perched at its summit, is one of the three most sacred religious sites in Myanmar, along with the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Temple. Pilgrims come here from far and wide to worship and add gold leaf to the rock, which seems to defy gravity by delicately balancing on the edge of the 1100-meter high mountain.
For many visitors, the rock (standing 7.6 meters tall) and the gilded pagoda which sits on top of it (itself 7.3 meters tall), which are said to cover the hair of the Buddha, are the main draw, but another reason to make the journey are the panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding Mon State mountains from the summit. Bear in mind that the summit area can get very crowded during the peak season from November to March.
The Kyaiktiyo Pagoda Festival (also known as the Nine Thousand Lights Festival) takes place at Mount Kyaiktiyo late in the year and features food offerings at dawn and candle lighting after dark, illuminating the mountaintop. For exact dates and full Myanmar festival listings, go to our festival calendar.
