My sister visiting on Maria's sailboat in the CARIBBEAN - UNTIE THE LINES III #24

It looks like my sister forgave me for that crazy hike in Colombia since she is back for a visit. Karl is still engine-less, so we are invading Maria's space on good old JoJo and untie the lines to move to the San Blas islands for some vacation time!

Enjoy & ahoy,
Nike & Karl

Traditional Sailboat Charter In Paradise - UNTIE THE LINES III #27

Before our new guests for the Untie The Lines charter arrive in the beautiful San Blas Islands, we have to prep Maria's traditional sail boat Joana a little bit. We quickly repaint the galley and take off to fill the boat with water and refill our propane tanks.

If you wanna know what it's like to charter a traditional sailboat in the San Blas islands, then check out this week's episode! Or book your own charter vacation on or sailjoana@gmail.com

Solo Sailor Girl Adventures: Arriving in a new country with my sailboat - UNTIE THE LINES III #44

Life as a solo sailor girl is always a rollercoaster and I hope you understand that I live the highs and the lows to a full extent. It's crazy how the lows get blown away by the excitement, the beauty and the total bliss you get to experience as a sailor.

Thank you for all your beautiful comments last week!

Costa Rica!!! Here we come!

Girls Sailing Without An Engine - UNTIE THE LINES III #17

One last voyage without a working engine from Isla Otoque to Isla Taboga where I have found a safe mooring for Karl so I can fly home and earn some extra $$$ for a new engine.

Since winds are always low and turning in this area, it was a challenge to leave the anchor bay with the currents pushing...After a tiring and blood pressure raising maneuver we had to give up and throw an emergency anchor to keep Karl off the rocks. Wanna know how we got off? Then check out this week's episode.

Enjoy & Ahoy,

Family Time On Karl - UNTIE THE LINES III #18

It took more than three years, but finally my parents come to visit me and set eyes and foot on Karl for the first time.

We explore the island of Taboga and enjoy some quality family time together. My mom loves Karl's homeyness and my dad seems surprised how sturdy my good old boy is.

It was beautiful and precious for me to have my family visit my floating home and I hope to welcome them on board again some time in the future when Karl is actually able to move around a bit.

Enjoy & Ahoy,
Nike & Karl

Girl Power: Aligning the NEW ENGINE of my sailboat - UNTIE THE LINES III #33

The engine repower fun goes on. Now that Karl is back in the water, it's time to tackle the alignment. First we need to build some extra spacers to raise the engine a bit more before we can move it slightly up and down and left and right to manage to get the transmission flange and shaft coupling aligned with gaps smaller than 4 thousandth of an inch.

Will we succeed? Well, you have to watch to find out...

Enjoy and Ahoy,
Nike & Karl

Boom! There goes my starter unit... - UNTIE THE LINES S3E06

Karl's engine had come to a stop in a big storm in Portobelo. Time to go and look for the cause...and try to fix it. It's always an adventure to figure out how to get parts / repairs done in Panama. Come and join me in the search for the cure!

Circumnavigating The Golfo Dulce - UNTIE THE LINES III #45

You might remember Manny from one of the earlier San Blas charter episodes on Sail Joana. After booking a charter on Maria's sailboat Joana in June 2017, he had asked me if he could come and visit me on Karl one day. And here he is! Manny jumped on board in Golfito (Costa Rica) in the Golfo Dulce and since he only had a couple of days of vacation, we decided to make little baby jumps around the Golfo Dulce and explore the area a little bit.

It was his first time on a small sailing vessel and he took it all in. It was inspiring to see how much he enjoyed it all and how he dove into the freedom and tranquility of this salty lifestyle.

Enjoy & Ahoy,
Nike and Karl

This SUCKS! 30 gallons of DIESEL in my bilge and my parents come visit next week. S4E01

UNTIE THE LINES is BACK!

After some time back home in Germany and helping Maria with charters on Joana, I am finally returning to my floating home Karl. As usual, he has not been too impressed with my absence and has prepared a fairly annoying surprise for my return...

I guess this new season starts off just as you all know Untie The Lines...boat problems ????.

Watch the first episode of Season IV now to find out what smelly surprise I had to deal with upon my return.

Enjoy and Ahoy,
Nike

Solo Sailing: The Daily Struggles - UNTIE THE LINES III #43

Karl and I are still on our way to Costa Rica. It's the typical crazy up and down of cruising life...Some things went really well and some things went not so fantastic. Travelling by myself always throws me from one mood to the other, sometimes feeling totally on top of my stuff and sometimes feeling overwhelmed with everything that is happening.

Let me know what feelings you experience when you are out there in the comments, would love to hear about it!

DIRTY JOBS on Joana. Putting the CREW to work on a TRADITIONAL SAILBOAT - UNTIE THE LINES IV #24

Karl is floating happily again and now it’s time to give Maria a hand with her sailboat Joana for a change.

Simon and I head down to Vista Mar Marina and tag team a couple of jobs on the to do list.

And of course there is some good home made food involved, too.

Facing Reality: Do I have to give up my dream of living on my sailboat? - UNTIE THE LINES IV #20

Time to get my shit together again, I guess! This salty life is for sure a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, it’s all part of the deal.

After a week of hibernation and procrastination, it’s time to face reality again and to move forward. Which direction forward will be still has to be figured out, I guess.

San Blas Charter On A Traditional Sailboat - UNTIE THE LINES III #28

We have had a great week with our Untie The Lines charter group. They were really eager to lern how to run big old Joana and we had a fun time exploring the Kuna culture together.

If you would like to book a charter for next season, then head over to or drop Maria a line at sailjoana@gmail.com. And by the way, I will be working charters with her again early 2018, so maybe I will see you then!!!

Sailor Girls Exploring Boobie Island - UNTIE THE LINES III #16

The engine-less journey continues. We have to wait for some wind to get out of the anchorage in Isla Bona, so we decide to explore the island by land and by sea.

With the smallest of a breeze we set sail to Isla Otoque, only 5nm north from Isla Bona and make it just before sunset. The life of a purist sailor definitely requires a lot of patience and some strong nerves at times where u sail so close to shore that you can already hear the water rush through the gravel on the beach...

Enjoy & Ahoy,
Nike, Maria & Karl

Coming Down The Final Stretch - UNTIE THE LINES III #08

Jeff, Maria and I hired a car to head up to Panama City to pick up some stuff I had ordered from the states.

Back in Shelter Bay, we went through a ton of last minute boat projects and then Karl got measured for the upcoming Panama Canal Transit. Busy times on Karl...

Sailing Around Beautiful Islands: The San Blas Experience - UNTIE THE LINES III #21

My friend Maria needed some crew for her charter business and I still had to pay off my new engine, so I jumped on a car, made it over to the beautiful San Blas Islands and worked some charters with her.

It was a great experience and fun working on Maria's side watching her handle big old Joana. And it was awesome to see the smiles on the happy faces of our first guests.

Enjoy & Ahoy,

Loading up my sailboat with tons of food. Ready to go offshore! - UNTIE THE LINES S3E05

After a squally sail buddy boating with Joana from Guna Yala to Portobelo, it's time to fill Karl's belly with some goodies for the Pacific. But where should all this new stuff go? Guess I need to find some new storage solutions...

It only took three years, but Karl and I are finally crossing the Panama Canal...

Just A Little Sprinkle - UNTIE THE LINES III #46

Many dared to go on a little hike with me in Bahía Rincon and of course we got a little lost.

Unfortunately, it was already time to say goodbye again to Manny...

My Kayak got stolen in Golfito and after some dull and angry days of trying to get it back, I decided to take up anchor and head to the surfspot Pavones for some days of relaxation and fun.

Enjoy & Ahoy,
Nike & Karl
