Today in Chicago, I had the pleasure to meet a young North Korean girl named Evelyn. 6 years ago, when she was 15 years Evelyn, she escaped North Korea with her mother for a better life. Both without passports, they spent 1 month traveling by foot across China, Laos and Thailand - where the South Korean government officially recognized her as a refugee and she was granted permission to migrate to the United States of America.

In this eye-opening interview, Evelyn tells me her escape story and how she has managed to integrate so well into American society. She lives all by herself and just bought her first car (with her hard-earned income!).

My life in North Korea vs South Korea

UPDATE. A year after publishing this video, I decided to make another video that explains why it might not be a good idea to travel to North Korea yourself: I know it's ironic of me to say it as I've been there myself, but please think twice before making that decision. Also, if you want to learn more about the history of North Korea, watch this other video I made that's only 4 minutes long:

Free $34 AirBnb credit for your next trip:

One year ago I went on a strictly guided 7 day-tour in North Korea where they took away my passport and did not allow me to explore anything on my own. North Korea was definitely the weirdest country I had ever visited and throughout that trip I kept wondering what life was like in the neighboring South Korea, because it used to be the same country just over 60 years ago.

To answer my questions, this year I traveled to South Korea and made this video, where I compare my time in the North and my time in the South. I still have a lot of questions about the whole situation, but one thing was clear - the daily lives of the Korean people couldn't be any more different than they are right now.

My favorite books about North Korea:

Dear Leader by Jang Jin Sung -
Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden -
Nothing To Envy by Barbara Demick -
1984 by George Orwell (I couldn't believe how similar some things in North Korea felt to the ones in the book) -

'The Privileged' Store in North Korea - Part 1

====================================================
Ok, so this is my 46th video that I uploaded, many people asked me..
How could you upload youtube video in NK?.
He uploads the video after he back to Indonesia, because he didn't dare if he upload directly from NK.
Nope..that is not entirely True..

#jakaparker #northkorea #koreautara

The answer is..

I already back to Indonesia, and currently I live in Indonesia..
My first 23 videos was uploaded when I was in North Korea.

The most different thing that when I uploaded video in NK, for a 15 minute video needed two days to upload, because the internet there was unstable due to electricity on off several times in a day..I can’t subscribe for cellular internet mobile because its way too expensive and..not reliable too...
but..when in Indonesia, I can choose which provider for internet and to upload a 15 minute video need only few minutes...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK..
back to this video..
I was going to a store which was located inside the Diplomatic Compound in Munsu District, behind Vietnam Embassy (you can check it out in Google Maps)
Sure..because these videos is about my daily life in NK...so I only posted about my routines things that I am doing in NK).

This store named Pyongyang Shop, which only several people who can access inside, only Foreigners and local Korean people who can get permission to be inside Diplomatic Compound (usually Korean people who works for foreign Organisations and embassies).

Btw.. sorry for bad English and Korean..

Any viewers who understand Korean language might be laughing hearing me trying to make conversations with the locals..please pardon me.

North Korean Living in NYC (Yeonmi Park)

This is my 2nd YouTube channel, if you don't already subscribe to my main channel, you can check it out here:

This is a sequel to the first story I made with Yeonmi Park in Chicago:

I caught up with my friend Yeonmi Park, perhaps the most well-known North Korean refugee. She recently moved from Chicago to New York, and she tells me about her life living in the South Korean neighborhood of the city, and how she is evolving as a newly U.S. citizen (yes, she just got her U.S. passport!)

Yeonmi Park is one of the strongest, most resilient people on this planet, and it was truly a pleasure to get to meet her again. Check out her YouTube channel, where she makes stories about the cruel life in North Korea:

North Korea FACTS: 5 things YOU CAN'T DO or must do

5 unusual rules that a tourist strictly has to follow if going to North Korea. Based on my own experience on my trip in April 2017. How does NK look like from the other side? I will show the contrast with the Chinese bordering city at the end of the video. DON'T MISS IT!

I entered the country with a Spanish passport (note: US passports are not allowed). I was a bit nervous the days previous to the trip, but I haven't felt either fear or danger inside North Korea. There's no danger for a tourist if one complies with all the rules (as it is stated in the Travel Agreements).
There had only been tense feelings at the Mausoleum. Nervousness for the possibility of doing a mistake by accident, and not complying with the strict rules properly.

Here’s a recap of the 105th Anniversary trip:

RESOURCES
· The last update on South and North Korea agreements (as of Dec. 2021)
· Kumsunsan Palace of the Sun comprehensive photo album (all Mauloleum pictures in the video are not mine)

· Books that arose my curiosity before going to the DPRK:
- Nothing to Envy: Real lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick:
- The Girl with Seven Names: Escape from North Korea by Hyenseo Lee:
- Without You, There Is No Us: My secret life teaching the sons of North Korea’s elite by Suki Kim:
- In Order To Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom by Yeonmi Park:
She also has a YT channel Voice of North Korea by Yeonmi Park:
