Back to the Roots: Black Americans Exploring their Heritage in Ghana

Gullah Roots: How to go to Africa on a Roots Tour

Sierra Leoneans and Gullahs have known about their family connection for more than 30 years, and people on both sides of the Atlantic are eager to learn more about it. This is what Fambul Tik (“Family Tree”), a Sierra Leonean cultural organization, will address when we lead an historic study tour of Sierra Leone in December, 2019. Our visitors will include Gullah people, Gullah performers, historians, historical preservationists, and cultural activists.

We call our tour: “The Sierra Leone-Gullah Connection: The Next Step.”

Homecoming : Exploring My African Roots

Demontray Lockhart always knew his disconnection with the USA, his birthhome, was more than just a passing phase. With a wanderer’s streak, his experiences teaching in South Korea and Thailand told him one truth : He did not know who he truly was. But that’s about to change.

This is the story of a man’s journey to discover his identity, his name and his culture. From dark dungeons to slave-cleansing waters, Demontray takes us on a journey to Africa where it all began. In Ghana, West Africa, where the horrors of slavery evolves into Demontray’s need for understanding, belonging and finally, peace.

I Spent a Day in Haiti's Most Dangerous Slum

Get Access to my (updated) Travel Hacking Course!
First 100 New Members Get a Personally Signed Book of my Top 100 Best Travel Photos!

Guys I have to be honest with you in this one. After visiting all 197 countries and thousands of cities around the world, I can say with 100% certainty that Port au Prince, Haiti, takes the crown as THE MOST DANGEROUS. Yes, more than Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Syria and Iraq COMBINED.

I've never experienced before what I just experienced in Haiti... 80% of the city is controlled by violent street gangs, and when we crossed the sketchy checkpoint to enter the biggest slum called Cite Soleil, we had to get permission from the gang-leading chief to enter. I can't make this stuff up.

I'm just glad that I made it out alive and am here to tell this story. My heart aches for the people in Haiti, who are living through this disastrous situation. I hope the country will return to its thriving days like it was a few decades ago. There is so much potential with stunning beaches, smiling faces, and Caribbean vibes.

Thanks for watching - it took my team of 4 and myself more than 3 weeks to get this story edited. My hope is that this video sparks conversations that contribute to a broader understanding and ultimately, a positive change for the future of Haiti.

Real Talk:
Despite our attempt at keeping our Morocco Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting videos. What you don’t see are the hours spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the unpleasant challenges we faced.

Did we like everything about Morocco?
Far from it. As mentioned in the video, the huge amount of trash definitely dampened our experience. Additionally, we were surprised by the sheer number of begging children. During our trip, we counted a minimum of 500 children asking us for money or sweets. While Morocco undoubtedly has to combat poverty, this behavior often seemed less dictated by need and more by opportunity. Stopping and giving is an individual choice, of course, but when we didn’t we were regularly flipped off, kicked after, or hurled insults at.
In general, though, we perceived most Moroccans as extremely friendly and helpful. The best example is the three local men who selflessly helped us to change our ruptured tire. We cannot thank them enough.

Full Disclosure:
This trip was entirely self-funded. However, we did enjoy a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Oualidia and a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Marrakech.

Kurd Video A01: Kurdistan - Journey From South Africa To My Ancient Roots

Discover the greatest scholarly ancestral history. My 27th ancestor father founded the greatest - territorially speaking - educational endowment in history. This was on the greater part of the Harir Plain in Southern (Iraqi) Kurdistan in the year 1129. It is located at the exact center of the African Eurasian landmass. After seven hundred years tragedy struck - in 1831 - that eventually caused us to end up in South Africa in the year 1863. The Kurds have rediscovered this magnificent history of theirs and have produced a documentary about it. I was extended an invitation to Kurdistan to attend the premiere. In all of recorded history, it would undoubtedly rate among the most hospitable welcomes of its kind. I intend to create a comprehensive account of it all - 'in shaa' ALLAAH/God Willing. This is the first video - numbered and named -: Kurd-Video-A01- Journey From South Africa To My Ancient Roots.
