2019 New Hiking Gear | Things I Will Be Testing / Replacing

For the 2019 hiking season I plan on putting a few new pieces of gear to the test. The backpacks are little on the larger side to accommodate extra gear and food in the event I happen to do another long distance trail. I also wanted a backpack that worked for carrying my entire winter load for overnights.

Not sure if I will do an entire full gear load out video this year as aside from the things shown here my gear load out is essentially the same as last year. Will see how it goes though.

Nemo Banshee Quilt - don't buy
Nemo Switchback or
Liteaf Bear Bag -
Granite Gear Crown VC 60 at Amazon -
Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest or

Full disclosure - The links in this description are more than likely affiliate links. This means if you click on one of these links and make a purchase I make a commission from that sale. As much as I love money, I would highly suggest giving yourself at least 48 hours before any purchase decision and asking yourself “Do I really need this?”. I hope more times than not, you find yourself saying “I Definitely do NOT need this”. If you find yourself still in need, shop around and find the best deal for your money.

Please note that I am not recommending any of the gear seen in any of my videos. The gear I use is what I have found works best for me at the time period I am using it. I have come to these gear choices through vast levels of trial, error, and experimenting with gear out on trail.

Gear, clothing, footwear, etc. are not one style works for all. Do as much research as you can, try out things in person if able, and make the best informed purchase decision for YOU. Do not buy gear just because it worked for, was showcased by, or recommended by someone on YouTube

Backpacking: My Favorite Piece of Gear for 2019

Recently, while I was out on a backpacking trip, i reflected on what my favorite piece of backpacking gear was for 2019. I had a lot of choices to make the top of the list but what it all boiled down to was what had made me the most comfortable on my trips. What I arrived at was the Nemo Cosmo 25L (now called the 3D) Insulated Sleeping Pad, the long/wide version. I bought this pad as a desperation type purchase at the gear store in Yosemite a couple of years ago. I have used it consistently since then (especially in the winter) and I have to say it is an awesome sleeping pad. It is quiet, comfortable and easy to use. The 3.5 loft really picks you up off the ground and there is no shoulder or hip rubbing. The integrated foot pump is very convenient as well. The temperature range of 15F to 25F is perfect for winter camping. I wish it were cheaper obviously, but I do see the value for the price with regards to this pad. It is currently listed on the Nemo website at $179.99. I paid much less than that though (still figuring that one out). On Amazon, it is also listed at that price. I am going to go ahead and leave a link for it below if you are interested. I highly recommend this pad.
