HELLO FROM COUNTRY #172 - ERITREA!

I'm thrilled to be back in Africa where I will spend the remaining 3 months of the year! Many of you probably haven’t heard of Eritrea before and that’s because it’s a relatively new country and it’s notoriously difficult to enter (top 5 in the world). After 48 hours of roaming around the capital of Asmara and the ancient port city of Massawa, I’ve really enjoyed my time here.

I’m getting flashbacks to when I was in Ethiopia, yet also touches of Yemen Somaliland and Italy. Yes - ITALY! Eritrea is a former Italian colony and their influence is remarkably well-preserved in the form of giant cathedrals, pizza parlors, gelato shops, old Italian cars, appertivos and many people can still speak fluent Italiano.

The capital of Asmara is VERY safe, with kind-hearted people and surprisingly the weather is cold here (2,400 meters high). Unfortunately due to WiFi issues, I haven't been able to upload anything until now, but there’s no hurry because life is wonderful here! More to come soon ????????

Fiat Tagliero in Asmara, Eritrea

Located in the center of Asmara, Eritrea’s capital city, is the Fiat Tagliero Service Station. Designed by famed Italian architect Giuseppe Pettazzi, this Futurist-style gas station was completed in 1938.

Asmara is the largest city in Eritrea and was incorporated as its capital by the Italians during their colonial rule of the African country. Pettazzi built many Art Deco buildings in Eritrea during this time, but this service station— modeled on airplane design as evidenced by its “wings”— is his most famous.

The Fiat Tagliero Service Station is a petrol station that includes a central tower with office space, a cashier’s desk, and a shop. The building’s flighty design is widely understood as a problematic nod to Italy’s Fascist history; it was built just months after the country’s airplanes dispensed thousands of sulfur mustard shells over Eritrea, killing tens of thousands of innocent civilians.

During construction, authorities attempted to convince the architect that the building’s wings required pillars, as a safety concern. Pettazzi refused to comply and went so far as to threaten the service station’s contractor and an unassuming construction worker with a handgun in a dramatic display of conviction standing atop his creation. Clearly, he felt the supports were not necessary, and he won the argument.

Pettazzi’s act is unsurprising, as architects who were too avant-garde for Mussolini’s Fascist Italy (and Europe in general) were sent to Asmara to design wildly imaginative buildings as a way to illustrate Italy’s idea of a modern city in their newly-taken territory. Pettazzi fit the bill.

A remarkable example of Italian modernist architecture, the Fiat Tagliero Service Station remains structurally sound to this day and has survived numerous conflicts and war. It was restored in 2003 and is unable to be altered by law. Thanks in part to this striking service station, Asmara was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2017.

Asmara, the most beautiful African city

While Eritrea was under Italian colonial rule, architecturally conservative early-20th-century Europeans used Asmara to experiment with radical new designs. Nowadays the major part of buildings are of Italian origin, and shops still have Italian names (e.g., Bar Vittoria, Pasticceria moderna, Casa del formaggio, and Ferramenta).
Asmara was populated by a large Italian community and consequently the city acquired an Italian architectural look. The city of Asmara had a population of 98,000, of which 53,000 were Italian according to the Italian census of 1939. This fact made Asmara the main Italian town of the Italian empire in Africa. In all of Eritrea the population of Italians was only 75,000 in total in that year, making Asmara by far their largest centre.

Many industrial investments were made by Italy in Asmara, but the beginning of World War II stopped the blossoming industrialization of the area.

The decision to federate Eritrea with Ethiopia in 1950 reflected the strategic interests of Western Powers, particularly the United States. The US Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, put this succinctly in 1952:

'From the point of view of justice, the opinions of the Eritrean people must receive consideration. Nevertheless the strategic interests of the United States in the Red Sea basin and considerations of security and world peace make it necessary that the country has to be linked with our ally, Ethiopia.'

alas, upon the forced US/UN sponcered federation being complete, which didn't take the Eritrean peoples' desires into consideration, it became the final straw for the Italians living in Eritrea to go back to Italy.

Upon return to Italy, many of the Italians who lived in Eritrea renamed Roman streets, buildings, shops with Eritrean cities, ethnic groups and provinces, to remind them of their distant African homelands they once called home.

Eritrea: The OLDEST new Nation (Part 1/2)

==========================================
What makes Eritrea the Oldest new nation you ask?
==========================================

One of the oldest hominids, representing a link between Homo erectus and an archaic Homo sapiens, was found in Buya (Eritrean Danakil) in 1995 by Italian scientists. The cranium was dated to be over 1 million years old

According to renowned archaeologist, evidence found on the shoreline of Eritrea's Red Sea coast that dates back 125,000 years ago supports the Out of Africa theory of human evolution leaving africa through Eritrea's Red Sea coasts. The first humans to leave Africa and colonize Earth left through Massawa's last beach party in Eritrea some 125,000 years ago.

The Land of Punt Empire found in Eritrea.

Ancient Egyptian sources also give references to cities and trading posts along the southwestern Red Sea coast, roughly corresponding to modern day Eritrea, calling this the land of Punt famed for its incense. Expeditions to this very land were launched by the Ancient Egyptians as early as the 25th century BC and were chronicled in more detail in later expeditions during the reign of the female Pharao Hatshepsut in the 15th century BC. As it stands, Eritrea is the only nation where they have been able to find evidence of Ancient punt artifacts in Eritrea, thus, diminishing the claims by Sudan, Ethiopia and central Somalia as being other possible location for this mysterious empire.

Aksumite Empire, along with the Roman Empire, Persian Empire and the Chinese Empire are said to be the greatest four empires of their time.

Aksum is mentioned in the 1st century CE Periplus of the Erythraean Sea as an important market place for ivory, which was exported throughout the ancient world:

From that place to the city of the people called Auxumites there is a five days' journey more; to that place all the ivory is brought from the country beyond the Nile through the district called Cyeneum, and thence to Adulis....
—Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, Chap.4

According to the Periplus, the ruler of Aksum in the 1st century CE was Zoscales, who, besides ruling in Aksum also held under his sway two harbours on the Red Sea: Adulis (near Massawa) and Avalites (Assab). He is also said to have been familiar with Greek literature:

These places, from the Calf-Eaters to the other Berber country, are governed by Zoscales; who is miserly in his ways and always striving for more, but otherwise upright, and acquainted with Greek literature.
—Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, Chap.5

Eritrea's Capital city of Asmara: Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, bordering the Red Sea, is referred by many expert travelers as the beautifulest city in Africa and is also home to one of the most important and exciting architectural 'discoveries' of recent years. Built almost entirely in the 1930s and early 40's by Italian and Eritrean workers, Asmara has one of the highest concentrations of modernist architecture anywhere in the world, and has evocatively been described as the Miami of Africa. Desperate to build quickly, the colonial government of the time allowed radical architectural experimentation that would not have found favour in the more conservative European environment. Asmara therefore became one of the world's prime locations for architectural innovation during the Modern Movement. That this occurred at all is remarkable enough, but that these buildings should have survived in such numbers today makes it one of the finest modernist cities in the World.
