UNMISSABLE THINGS TO DO ON LORD HOWE ISLAND, AUSTRALIA

If Lord Howe Island isn’t on your bucket list of places to see before you die then add it immediately.

Lord Howe Island is a place that immediately gets under your skin. As I flew into the tiny airport and I saw Mount Gower looming over an island surrounded by gorgeous blue and emerald reefs, I knew this would be a special place.

They call Lord Howe Island the Galapagos of Australia. That’s partly because of its remoteness in the world, but also because of how that isolation has created a place of unrivaled outstanding beauty.

And as if that isn’t enough to hammer home how amazing this place is, Lord Howe Island has just been voted as one of the top regions to travel to for 2020 in Lonely Planet's ‘Best in Travel’ list.

From being in the shadows of places like Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island in Australia, all of a sudden Lord Howe is front of stage in the spotlight. And here’s why.

Take a look at my video showcasing some of the best things to do on Lord Howe Island and you’ll see what I mean!

LORD HOWE ISLAND's Best Self-Guided Day Hike

Lord Howe Island's best self-guided day hike is a blend of a couple of different tracks on this incredible World Heritage listed paradise.
Australia's Lord Howe is just a 2 hr flight off the coast of Sydney. It is a magical place and an outdoor lovers paradise - hiking and bushwalking, snorkelling and bird watching. The Goathouse is the hardest of the self-guided full-day hikes on the island and this variation takes in two other iconic spots: Intermediate Hill and Rocky Run. Pack your lunch, plenty of water and be fully equipped for a full day out in wonderful Lord Howe Island.

Mt Gower Climb Lord Howe Island

Jack Shick, Lord Howe's local guide takes climbs to the top of Mt Gower on Monday and Thursday each week. A sneak preview of what it has to offer.

Climbing Mount Gower | Lord Howe Island

I set the goal of visiting Lord Howe Island and scaling Mt Gower for my 50th year in May 2018.

We started our Lord Howe Island trip with a day trip out to the see the amazing Balls Pyramid with Jack Shick then on our 2nd day I climbing Mt Gower with him.

Mount Gower is rated one of Australia's twenty best day walks/climbs. Jack is a fifth generation Islander and third generation mountain guide, following in the foot steps of his Grandfather and Father. Jack is the most experienced guide on Lord Howe Island with a total of more than 2300 guided trips to the summit. Jack has been a mountain guide for 20 years. There is no one on Lord Howe Island more experienced to guide you on an unforgettable day. Experience breathtaking views, see some of the Islands rarest plants and bird life. All walkers receive a free certificate to commemorate their trip as well.

Mt Gower is an iconic peak at the southern end of Lord Howe Island, rising 875m from sea level. Considered a medium to hard trek. The walk is around 14km return and takes about 8.5 hours to complete, so you need to be in good health and have no knee or back problems. The walks are scheduled for every Monday and Thursday #justdoit

Mt Gower Trek

Mt Gower is one of the hardest day walks in Australia. Those people who reach the summit (and many don't!) have an unforgettable experience.

Lord Howe Island - Start of the Mt Gower trek

Lord Howe Island, NSW, Australia. LHI is a tiny 11 km or ~7 mile long island located in a remote region of the Tasman Sea, South Pacific. Its one of those unique island destinations that is off the grid and still has luxury accommodations. In fact, Capella Lodge on LHI is the most expensive resort in Australia. Video clip is of the palm studded forest that marks the start of the famous 8 km Mt Gower trek.

Meet Dean Hiscox - Mt Gower Guide

Dean Hiscox, Mt Gower Guide, has seen more of Lord Howe Island than most people. As the park ranger for 16 years, Dean explored the remotest parts of Lord Howe on a daily basis. He guided the expedition that rediscovered the Lord Howe Phasmid on Balls Pyramid, and climbed the infamous Razorback. These days, Dean guides (and sometimes “skull drags”) guests to the summit of Mt Gower - arguably Australia’s hardest day walk - and runs, swims, kayaks and free-dives in his spare time to maintain his fitness. Join Dean on one of his 'normal' days, and let his story inspire you to greater things….

MOUNT GOWER CLIMB:

Lord Howe Island - Mount Gower and Lidgbird

Just arrived back into Sydney from literally one of the best trips of my life - Lord Howe Island - an absolutely incredible place! Being one of the most remote islands on the planet, I was without both internet and phone service for the entire week. Video shot while bike riding with a 3 axis handheld gimbal
