Until 1976, the city was called Lourenço Marques. The name was derived from the Portuguese trader who first explored the region in 1544. The port city with a population of 1,122,000 as of 2021 is the capital of Mozambique. It is an Indian Ocean port with preserved Portuguese colonial architecture. Many turn-of-the-century buildings are in the downtown Baixa neighborhood.

Streets of Africa presents places in Africa how I see them. It is not my priority to look for touristic or famous spots. I just walk or run or drive by car and I film what I see.

Mozambique - Travel Tips for Surfers & Divers | TOFO & VILANCULOS
As a surfing and diving couple, we explored the southern coastline of Mozambique for 2 weeks. We stayed most of the time in Tofo and made a short trip to Vilanculos to end our trip. In this video we show you the beauty of the Bazaruto Archipelago, the red sand dunes, the two mile reef and some of the best dive and surf spots around Tofo like Tofinho. It should give you a good overview of the things to do, where to stay, where to eat, how to get around and what to take care of. Enjoy!

Mozambique UWA 2017
This new year, I spent 2 months in what turned out to be one of the most amazing places I've been -- Mozambique. As it is always said, it's the people who make a place (and in this case also the sea creatures), and that is certainly true for this adventure. While interning with Underwater Africa I met some of the most amazing friends, who I cannot thank enough for making my journey in Mozambique wonderful. I can't wait to see you all again, and I can't wait to make my way back to Tofo!

Some years old, but interesting to compare now and then. Scenes from the upper and lower city, just like Lisbon. Walking along Baía de Maputo seeing beaches like Costa do Sol, Mira Mar and taking ferry to Catembe village and beach. Downtown to Mercado Municipal, Mercado do Pau (wood market), Casa de Ferro, Maputo Cathedral, Independence Square, the railway station, some roads with communist names like Avenida Vladimir Lenine.
