Nighttime OMANI STREET FOOD in Muscat!! Mishkak, Omani Burgers & Lamb Chops | Oman

????????OMAN TRAVEL:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

After exploring the Wahiba Sands and the coastal city of Sur in Oman, I made my way back to Muscat to have some street food at night! Come with me on my nighttime Omani street food tour of Muscat, Oman!

My friends at Oman Travel and I would be having mishkak, burgers, lamb chops, and more. There were tons of outdoor street food vendors lined up along a road. Lots of people pull up here in their cars to place their orders!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My friends Mohammed and Osama first took me to Asoom Burger. They were making tons of mishkak (skewered meat), including lamb, chicken, and squid. They dip them into a delicious tamarind sauce that pairs so well with the heartiness and smokiness of the lamb! I also liked the chilies in it.

The squid mishkak was really tender and tasty, and a little spicy! It was really amazing! One of the guys there is a famous Instagrammer and makes viral videos! He was really nice and didn’t charge us, even though we had 7 skewers in total.

At Hilal Burger, they make mishkak, kababs, and lamb chops, but they’re also famous for their burgers. They put 44 burgers on the grill at once. They had chicken and lamb, and topped them with cheese and peppers. There were also kids selling refreshments.

The lamb burgers came with some spicy tamarind sauce. I loved the fluffy bun and the huge lamb patty. The onions and olives were also a nice touch. Adding the tamarind sauce added a sweet and spicy kick!

I followed that with a small bottle of milk with nuts I’d bought from one of the kids. It was good, almost like almond milk! It helped calm down the heat. In total, the burgers would have cost us about $3 USD but they wouldn’t let us pay either!

Next, we went to a juice cart selling fresh juices. He made us one with mint, ice, 7-Up, passionfruit syrup, strawberry syrup, and raspberry syrup. They cost about $3 USD each. It was really nice. It reminded me of a virgin mojito with strawberry and raspberry. We also had a delicious fresh passionfruit juice!

Our next stop was Burger & More, where they had a huge grill full of lamb, shrimp, and squid mishkak, as well as lamb chops and burgers. The guys there were so friendly! The lamb chops looked really nice and spicy! They also gave us chapati and pasta.

The pasta was creamy and delicious. I was surprised at how good it was! The shrimp mishkak was smoky and succulent, and the tamarind sauce blew me away.

I couldn’t get enough of the lamb chop with the sauce. The freshness of the meat, plus the spice, the tamarind, and the smokiness, was excellent! The flavors were so unique! It cost us roughly $7 USD for three shrimp mishkak and three lamb chops.

Finally, we headed over to a vendor selling local chai. I went with a chai with saffron. It was piping hot, but I loved the cardamom and saffron in it. It was the perfect way to end our food tour!

Endless OMANI FOOD TOUR of Muscat - Mishkak, Shakshuka & Zarubian Rice in Oman!!

???????? OMAN TRAVEL:
????????‍???? DUKANAH CAFE:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

I couldn’t explore the beautiful city of Muscat, Oman without going on a proper food tour of the city. It’s an absolute must to get a real feel for the capital. Come with me on my wild Omani food tour in Muscat, Oman!

My guides Ahmed and Hussain from Oman Travel would be taking me to three famous restaurants in the city Cheese & Jam, Dukanah Cafe, and Lahab Kitchen Restaurant. I couldn’t wait!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

We started at Cheese & Jam, a small but popular local coffeeshop where we’d have some cheese and jam sandwiches. It would be fluffy and made with white bread. One of them even contained Omani chips!

Ahmed added some hot sauce to my chips sandwich. It was both fluffy and crunchy. The egg sandwich contained hard-boiled egg and butter. But the cheese and jam was really sweet and creamy from the cheese and butter.

There was also a cheese and butter sandwich. I wish they had been toasted on a panini press, but they were still OK. I really liked the karak! Everything we ate came to roughly $3 USD.

We were near the ministry of defense and a castle. From there, we drove through Moutrah, which is where the Omanis lived back when the Portuguese were in Oman. The architecture here is different from what you see elsewhere.

We arrived at Dukanah Cafe, a famous brunch spot in a traditional mud-style house. The mud insulates from the heat in summer and from the cold in winter!

I loved the wooden beams overhead and the mud walls. The decor was a mix of traditional and modern. First, I tried some kahwa coffee, which is made from green coffee beans.

I followed with with some dates. In the kitchen, they made us some lamb mishkak, chicken mishkak, beef mishkak, and a breakfast platter with bread, honey, and more.

We took the paper thin Omani bread and started with the shakshuka (scrambled eggs with tomatoes and vegetables). It felt very Mediterranean. The ful (kidney beans) were nice and hearty and came in a thick gravy I loved.

Next was the donga (chickpeas), followed by some spicy chilies that were so hot, I needed some cream with honey to cool down my mouth!

The ful mudammas (fava beans) were sweet and flavorful. Then, I used the thicker chapati to try the yellow dal. The feta with za’atar and oil was creamy and flavorful. It wasn’t as salty as Greek feta.

The lamb mishkak with tamarind sauce blew me away. The sweetness enhanced the flavor of the meat! The chicken mishkak was smoky and charred.

The beef mishkak was excellent with some honey! The earthy and gamy meat with the sweet and sticky honey was a n amazing contrast!

Next was the qurus with date syrup. They were basically small wheat pancakes. I loved the date syrup and honey with them, but the honey was better!

Then, we had the swaywieh, which are fried vermicelli noodles cooked with milk and sugar and topped with sliced almonds. They were very sweet and contained cardamom!

Finally was the khabeesa, which is a sweet wheat pudding with milk and sugar. It wasn’t too sweet and had pistachios on top.

From there, we drove to Lahab Kitchen Restaurant, a traditional family restaurant that has modern tables and traditional private dining rooms. Some of the dining rooms are like tents!

In the kitchen, we watched them make Zarubian rice, which is filled with Arabic spices. It smelled amazing and contained almonds, bell peppers, onions, crispy onions, cashews, and lamb shuwa,

We ate it on the floor with the owner and his brother. The lamb shuwa was so tender and flavorful. I loved the gelatin-like fat, saffron, crispy onions, and bone marrow!

Then, they added salad and raita on top. It was great with the spicy chutney, too! We finished with lamb mishkak and tamarind chutney and red tea!

Omani STREET FOOD TOUR of MUTRAH SOUQ | Muscat, Oman

????OMAN TRAVELS:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

My adventures in beautiful Muscat, Oman continued with an Omani street food tour of the Mutrah Souq. Let’s head out and explore it!

Mutrah Souq is a traditional Arab market under wooden timber roofing. You can buy clothing, souvenirs, home goods, street food, and much more there!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

It’s right by the Mutrah Cornich, which is an oceanside boardwalk. Inside the souq are tons of shops. Immediately, we found Al-Raha Fast Food, where they were selling Indian snacks like samosas and pakoras.

Further on were vendors selling spices and incense, as well as a coffee shop (Abna Haji Bin Beri Trad. Coffee) selling rose milk. My guides Ahmed and Hussain said it’s their favorite place to buy it. They only cost us about $0.40 each!

The rose milk was creamy, frothy, and cold. They also gave us some crispy veg samosas. I liked the potatoes and onions inside.

Next, we saw shops selling jewelry, lamps, chess boards, magnets, knives, and more. At Saffron Leading Village, they sold Indian and Iranian spices, including turmeric, black pepper and saffron.

They sell 3 different varieties of saffron. It’s the most expensive spice in the world! In another shop, we saw some oil lamps like the ones from Aladdin, a sword, and more. I got 3 pairs of earrings for my daughters for about $16 USD.

The guy showed me some anime drawings his daughter did. They were really good.

The Mutrah Souq reminded me a lot of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Then, at Mohammed Ridha Bin Khamis Bin Ali Al-Lawati Trad. Shoes, I got me some Marc Comfort Omani-style sandals for about $25 USD!

At the next shop, we found some traditional hats called kummas. I tried a few on and went with a blue-and-white one. Then, I got a traditional white dishdasha, which extends to your ankles, and a head turban called a massar.

Ahmed tied a couple of different massars around head while I was wearing the hat. I went with two kummas, two massars, and the dishdasha, for $50 USD. He gave me a small deal!

From there, we continued through the souq. A lot of the items we saw were imported from India and Iran. Then, we stopped at a spot making beef shawarma with cabbage, hot sauce, and tahini.

The cabbage was nice and crunchy, and the beef really tender. The toasted pita was almost paper thin! I loved the juices from the meat mixing with the hot sauce! It was a great deal for under $1 USD.

Finally, we exited the souq and headed to a nearby spot to get some chicken shawarma! The cook mixed it with cabbage and tahini. We had some chilies and hot sauce on the side.

The chicken shawarma was meatier than the beef one, and fattier as well. It was tastier and had more sauce, too. It cost us $4 USD for four.

Then, we stopped at a 70-year-oldcoffee shop that sells samosas, small sandwiches, and more. I saw them grilling some thin chapatis. We tried some small veg samosas. Then, we watched them make some sandwiches using the chapatis.

They added cream cheese, chips, and hot sauce to the chapati. Of course, we added hot sauce. It reminded me of the rolled sandwiches I ate in Lebanon.

The hot sauce reminded me of tabasco. I loved the contrast between the flaky parotta, the crispy chips, and the velvety sour cream!

Finally, we finished with some karak tea. It was frothy and contained lots of milk and cardamom. I loved it!

Endless SHAWARMA in Oman - The Ultimate Shawarma Tour of Muscat, Oman!!

???????? OMAN TRAVEL:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

With my final day in Oman upon me, I knew I had to go on an endless shawarma tour during my last few hours in Muscat! Come with me as I try a bunch of different varieties!

My guide Mahfoodh at Oman Travel and I would be hitting up four local spots, starting at Al Karawan Al Turki, one of the top shawarma spots in Muscat. They sell a mix of Turkish and Arabic shawarma. I met a pair of employees from India. One of them was from Hyderabad!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

There, we watched them cook and shave the chicken shawarma off the spit. They add fries, lettuce, a Turkish sauce, some chicken grease, and a creamy sauce to a warm pita.

At our table, Mahfoodh and I had our small chicken shawarmas and a plate of toum (garlic paste). We added a bit of toum and a piece of chili, as well as a few drops of hot sauce. I loved the soft pita bread. It wasn’t too spicy, and the toum was fantastic. Then, I added a whole chili to it to make it spicier!

We washed it down with some water. They were so kind and didn’t charge us at all! Then, we headed to our next restaurant, Filful, which was Lebanese. There, we met up with my friend and guide Ahmed.

Filful is one of the best places for Lebanese shawarma. They have beef, chicken, and lamb, and also sell an amazing rose drink. Inside, the restaurant felt very Lebanese. I saw some kaak bread and lamb pies called laham bi ajeen, which are also known as sfeeha. I ate some delicious ones in Baalbek!

They also had sabanekh (sour spinach pies), and manakish (small, pizza-like pastries with za’atar and cheese). In the kitchen, we watched the shawarmas cook, and they made us a rose lemonade. It was citrusy and refreshing with a nice rose flavor. It was the best lemonade I’ve ever had!

Then, they built our shawarmas with toum, lettuce, tomatoes, and fries. They also made us some tabbouleh and hummus. They added chickpeas, basil, and olive oil to the hummus. They also baked us fresh bread and gave us some lettuce.

The garlic, fries, spice, and chicken in the chicken shawarma were all fantastic. I added pomegranate molasses to give it some sweetness. I also loved adding the tabbouleh to the lettuce. The tomatoes and parsley really popped! The hummus had some spice to it and was great with bread.

The beef shawarma was perfect by itself. The parsley, tahini, and beef were an amazing combination. I liked it better than the chicken! Then, I headed back into the kitchen to watch them make nutella kaak. They cut it in half and spread the inside with nutella and bake it in the forno.

Then, they sprinkle grated hazelnut on it and then make it a sandwich with the other half of the kaak. It took me back to my childhood. I loved the nutella, sesame seeds, and hazelnut!

Our next stop was Baba Salem Turkish Food, the top rated spot on Trip Advisor. They have a massive shararma on a spit there. It was wider than my body! I’d never seen on that big! It feeds 3,000 people!

Here, they mix beef and chicken. They lets me shave some of the chicken off. The guy even fed me some, which was incredible. They also had some massive, 2-meter-long bread, a lamb bread, and kebabs!

Mahfoodh and I loved the creamy, spicy sauce. The crispy pita, creamy garlic, and mix of chicken and beef were amazing. Adding peppers was really good.

Finally, we stopped at Fairoz Cafe, where they made toasted chicken shawarma on lavash with toum and Omani chips. I loved the crunchy texture and the creamy garlic and mayo.

What an incredible shawarma tour in Muscat!

Authentic ZANZIBAR FOOD in OMAN!! East African Food Tour in Muscat, Oman!!

????????OMAN TRAVEL:
????????‍???? KILIMANJARO RESTAURANT & CAFE:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

No deep dive into the world of Omani cuisine is complete without having a taste of Zanzibar cuisine! Come with me as I enjoy authentic Zanzibar food in Muscat, Oman!

The island of Zanzibar lies over 2,000 miles from Oman, off the coast of Tanzania in eastern Africa. But even though it’s so far away, it was became part of the Oman Empire in the late 17th century, and so its cuisine has made its way to Oman!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My friend and guide Ahmed from Oman Travel took me to Outer Space Restaurant. The cook there was from Zanzibar, and showed me kachori, chicken mishkak, coconut fish, biryani, chapati, Zanzibar-style tandoori chicken, pulao, tamarind juice, and more!

In the back, they were making fresh kachori and Zanzibar-style samosas. They basically had a mini buffet. They also had knafeh (a sweet, cheesy dish), falafels, and more. It was a bit mix of African, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Omani influences! And a lot was fried!

The chicken cutlet with coconut chutney was soft with light spices. But it was also very flavorful! The kachori was basically a fried mashed potato ball. I loved that the coconut chutney took it to the next level!

The katlesi za samaki was basically a crispy, fried fish croquette. It was salty and fishy but very nice. Next was the katlesi za nyama, or beef cutlet. It looked identical to the fish one but wasn’t fishy or salty.

The spring roll contained cabbage and carrots. Next was honeycomb bread, which is like a dinner roll stuffed with cheese and drizzled with honey. It’s creamy and crispy!

Next, the ndizi tamu (plantains in coconut milk sauce) was sweet and full of cinnamon. I followed that with the biryani and pulao. The cumin and onions in the pulao were excellent, and I liked the light biryani with the chicken.

I also loved the crispy and meaty samaki wa kukaanga, or fried fish. It went great with the pulao and coconut chutney! I finished with some refreshing and tangy tamarind juice!

Then, my guide Hussain showed me their chili achar and mango achar. I had to buy some to take home! After that, we drove to Kilimanjaro Cafe & Restaurant.

It was a nice cafe with lots of Tanzania-inspired decor on the walls, including images of elephants and giraffes, Maasai warriors, and Mount Kilimanjaro.

In the kitchen, they were grilling octopus; a dish of stir-fried greens, carrots, onions, and coconut milk called michicha; a spinach, nuts and carrot dish with coconut called kisamvu; a massive grilled lamb chop called nyama choma.

The nyama choma is then chopped up and comes out tender and smoky. I loved the spices in it! They also made shark curry with coconut, ugali (cornmeal paste ball), and more.

At our table, we had ugali, michicha, kisamvu, mchuzi wa samaki (shark coconut curry), grilled octopus, and nyama choma. We started with the grilled octopus, which had a smoky charcoal flavor and was super tender.

It’s a best seller there! I loved it with the mango chili chutney. The nyama choma also had a beautiful charcoal flavor. It went well with both chutneys, especially the tamarind!

Next was the ugali with mchuzi wa samaki. The coconut flavor was unreal. Eating the ugali with the kisamvu and michicha blew me away. The michicha was the best spinach dish I’ve ever had!

The carrots and coconut in the michicha were great, but I liked the michicha by itself better. The shark in the kisamvu was outstanding, but the octopus was my favorite!

For dessert, I had a passionfruit juice and lemon. It was cold, refreshing, and a bit sour and tangy.

From the restaurant, I could see the sand dunes, which are in the middle of the city. What an amazing sight!

Omani STREET FOOD at NIGHT!! Endless Mishkak + Omani Burgers | Muscat, Oman

???? OMAN TRAVEL:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

Of course, a trip to Oman wouldn’t be complete without exploring this beautiful country’s street food scene! Come with me as I enjoy traditional Omani street food in Muscat, Oman!

We’d be having mishkak, which is basically Omani skewered meat. My friend and guide Ameer from Oman Travel took me to a local street food hangout where lots of vendors sell food at night.

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

The first vendor had beef, shrimp, and squid mishkak. Mishakeek is the plural form of the word. The beef skewers alternated meat and fat. The squid was so yellow, it looked like pineapple.

The mishkak is very inexpensive, too, at only $0.50 each. The vendor dipped the beef in a chili tamarind sauce. I loved its tenderness and the spicy sweetness of the sauce!

Next, I tried the squid with the chili tamarind sauce. It was just right and wasn’t rubbery like squid sometimes is. Then, we headed to Street Burger to watch the vendor inside the truck prepare the burger and dynamite fries.

The Cheetos burgers have cheese, red sauce, jalapenos, lettuce, and mayo on them. Meanwhile, the dynamite fries contain minced beef, sauce, and jalapenos.

We got the Cheetos burger’s bun was fluffy, while the meat was tender and flavorful. It reminded me of a juicy American burger and only cost $5-6 USD.

Then, the mishkak vendor gave me a shrimp mishkak. I loved that they drenched it in the spicy tamarind sauce. It was so good!It was nice and crunchy with the shell. The shrimp were succulent and meaty!

The next vendor also sold dynamite mishkak along with grilled corn on the cob. It’s basically dynamite fries with mishkak, along with chips, tamarind sauce, and cheese in it!

I loved the tamarind and the soft, fluffy fries. The combination of it all was like a tasty fry dish with gravy. They were so creamy and the tamarind added a sweet tanginess.

Then, we saw the vendor add some lemon juice and chili powder on the grilled corn. I enjoyed the spiciness and the sweetness of the tamarind. It’s the spiciest corn I’ve ever had!

Across the road, we got more mishkak at a different vendor. They cook on top of the hood of a car! They had so many beef mishakeek grilling there.

It was nice and charred, chunky, and juicy. The tamarind marinade was incredible. It was my favorite of the night!

The vendor was also cooking ears of corn on the grill as well. But his mishkak was amazing. It cost us $5 for 6 skewers.

Our final stop was Cholo Burger, which is more traditional . They added lettuce, onion, mayo, and cheese. It was tasty and different from the other burger. The bun was very soft and fluffy! But now I was full! It only cost us $2.50 USD!

#mrtaster #muscat #traditionalfood
Tasting the famous Ragag or Rakak bread, Shuwa, the national Omani dish, camel soup and Arsiya, and other famous Omani dishes at the spectacular Rozna restaurant in Muscat, Oman and visiting the traditional market of Muscat were all part of our plans on the second day of our stay in Muscat.
The magnificent Rozna restaurant is designed as a big castle, it is magnificent, and Mr. Suleiman, the owner of Rozna, explained some key points about this complex.
The restaurant has a large door and a small door. The smaller door is for the public and the big door is for famous people or an army.
There are 30 rooms here, each room has its own name. Names such as grandfather's room, grandmother's room, Busher's room, which is one of the areas of Muscat. The rooms are considered for different families with different income levels, depending on the decor and ceiling height and many other things. Some people like to sit in more private rooms.
It was time to taste different foods and items that were prepared in the restaurant every day, such as the famous Ragag or Rakak bread, which is a famous bread made from thin dough on a hot taweh, along with eggs and Omani chips, it was extremely delicious. We also tried the Omani camel soup, an extremely delicious combination of fresh camel meat, salt and pepper. The way to make this soup is to boil the meat for an hour, then throw away the juice and add water again with garlic and ginger, turmeric, pepper, salt and a whole onion in the pressure cooker.
When the camel meat is tender, they add herbs like mint and coriander and let it cook well. The soup has a unique taste.
They also prepared other various items for us, such as sambusas, kachori, masanif, which is eaten with tamarind sauce. Arsiyah that's much like harees made with wheat but arsiyah is made with rice, it also has meat and cardamom, which are mixed together, with Omani ghee and special spices and salt. We even tasted shuwa, the national dish of Oman.
The recipe of this dish in this restaurant is that they marinate the lamb meat or a part of the meat with special Omani sauce and spices, then they wrap it in banana leaf and put into the oven. It takes about 9 hours for it to slowly cook.
Shuwa is eaten with majboos and a special sauce and I must say it was extremely delicious. Next, we tasted some drinks, such as karak tea, which is a combination of milk and tea with Mandazi a type of sweet from Zanzibar, and also Soleimani tea, which were all very tasty.
Next, we went to visit the traditional Omani bazaar in Matrah Corniche, which is the old texture of the city and Matrah Bazaar, is where all Omani handicrafts are sold, all kinds of rosaries and beads, jewelry, etc.
Traditional coffee houses are located at the entrance of this market, which have been places for people to gather and meet each other since back in the day, and nowadays most of the old people welcome new tourists.

Oman STREET FOOD & ATTRACTIONS TOUR - Nizwa Fortress & Souq Experience in Oman!!

????????OMAN TRAVEL:
????SILVER CITY:
????????‍???? AL SAIFI:

After exploring Muscat, the Wahiba Sands, and Sur in Oman, I headed over to the city of Nizwa to explore the historical side of this incredible country. Come with me on my Omani food and attractions tour of Nizwa, Oman!

Nizwa is one of the most important tourism locations in Oman. It’s located just 90 minutes southwest of Muscat, which makes it a great day trip.

???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My guide Ahmed from Oman Travel and I began our day at Nizwa Fort. It’s a shining example of Omani architecture and is unique due to its massive cylindrical defense tower. It’s part castle, part fort, and part museum.

It costs 5 OMR for tourists and 2 OMR for locals to enter. Building materials included mud, rocks, and later, cement. Inside, we saw a well and several woman making crafts.

We saw a cross section of the tower showing the stairways, dungeons, and more. They used to drop hot oil on invaders through holes in the floor. There are also traps set into the floor and others that come down from the ceiling.

At the top of the tower, we saw the city, the souq, a nearby mosque, and the mountains beyond. Further on were student accommodations and a guestroom with beautiful carpets, bookshelves, and pillows.

Outside was a woman making a flatbread called rakhal by rolling a ball of dough around on the surface of a hot griddle. They add eggs, sour cream, and honey to it. It was paper thin, hot, crispy, rich, savory, and sweet! It cost us a little over $1.

From there, we walked toward the souq. Outside it, we saw shops selling jewelry, including lots of silver charms, bangles, daggers, pendants, lamps, and more at Silver City. I bought two camel charmsfor my daughters for $16 USD—he gave me a deal.

Outside were handmade incense holders and water jugs. I loved the different types of pottery!

We entered the official souq and saw vendors selling hats, pottery, ornaments, and more. There was so much pottery, and they were all different sizes! In another shop, I saw some amazing handmade daggers, including an elaborate silver one for $700 USD! He also made an amazing silver sword.

Next was the halwa market. At Saud Al Subhi Sons, they had samples of camel milk, brown sugar, frankincense, saffron, and special halwas! The camel milk was sweet and heavenly, the frankincense was nutty, and the special was my favorite!

I washed it down with come coffee with saffron, cardamom, and rose. The friendly vendor gave me a gift before I left. Elsewhere, we met vendors selling honey; coffee; halwa; and a delicious Omani version of Nutella with black pepper, honey, and cardamom.

Then, we headed to Al Saifi for their special halwas. Their walnut was soft and flavorful, while the date syrup halwa was stickier. The fig contained seeds and was really good, but the honey was the best!

After coffee, we went to Nizwa Al-Khair Restaurant. They had camel meat with bones in rich gravy, chicken, biryani, tuna, and kabuli. I went with kabuli with camel meat and some lamb. They gave us a salad with arugula, tomatoes, onions, and chilies.

The camel was gamy and lean but super tasty. I loved the rice with chickpeas and onions. I loved mixing the salad and sauces into the rice and camel. The lamb was also insane and fatty, and I liked the biryani, too. Everything came to about $15 USD.

We finished with karak, and then we headed to Harat Al Siybani, an abandoned mud village in the Old City. It’s made up of roughly 50 abandoned and crumbling mud buildings on a hill. There’s an irrigation canal with fish and tight passages and staircases between the homes.

We hiked to the top of the village and got some amazing views of the city!

Eating OMANI SEAFOOD for the First Time!! Lobster & Biryani + Historical City Tour | Sur, Oman

????????OMAN TRAVEL:
????????‍???? AL HAWASH RESTAURANT:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

After exploring the city of Muscat and the Wahiba Sands desert, I continued my exploration of Oman with a trip to the coastal city of Sur. Come with me as I check out the city and enjoy some local Omani food in Sur, Oman!

Sur is an historical seaport on Oman’s eastern tip. It lies roughly 93 miles southeast of Muscat. It has a long history with sailors and is also known for its shipbuilding. As early as the 6th century, Sur was an essential center for trade with East Africa. The wooden ships built there traveled as far as China and were even used for pearl fishing.

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

The city is also home to multiple points of interest, including its lighthouse and several forts. But before checking out the sites, my guides Ahmed and Ameer from Oman Travel took me to get a taste of Sur’s famous Omani seafood!

We’d be eating at Al Hawash Restaurant. It had a beautiful interior, like a traditional Omani house. There were Omani flags and pictures of the sultan hanging from the ceiling. On the right were cases of fresh fish and lobster.

In the kitchen, I saw them baking lobster, fish, calamari, and mussels. I was so excited to try them all! Elsewhere, they had some tuna coated in Omani spices, which they fried! Then, I watched them filet a kingfish. The cook de-scaled it, gutted it, butterflied it, and coated it in a masala.

Then, I watched them grill some chicken kebabs, cook some pressure-cooked lamb, and more. We had a whole platter of seafood! We decided to eat it on the terrace. We had lobster, shrimp, calamari, mussels, kingfish, grouper, four rice dishes, and two salads.

The lobster was stuffed with cheese and had a bit of spice to it. I also loved the masala on the calamari! The mussels also contained the Omani masalas. They were meaty and so creamy!

I enjoyed the kingfish a lot. It was meaty and buttery, and the unique masala really gave it a different feel. I loved that we were eating seafood while looking at the sea. The grouper was so tender, it melted in my mouth!

My favorite was the kingfish, but everything was excellent. I loved how fresh and local everything was. Next, I had some veg biryani with the kingfish and a reddish sauce. The chilies in it added a lot of heat! I washed it down with a mango smoothie to calm down the heat in my mouth.

As good as the kingfish was with the biryani, the calamari was even better because of the creamy masala. Then, I tried some of the amazing arugula and pomegranate salad. The owner was so nice! He didn’t even let us pay.

From the restaurant, we went to the dhow, which are traditional Arab boats used for trade and fishing. We visited the shipyard where they make them. The yard was surrounded by buildings I figured were homes for the builders.

The yard was empty since it was the weekend. These boats are engineering masterpieces. They’re beautiful and so well made!

Next, we drove to one of Sur’s three forts. Along the way, we passed some of the towers, which are a Portuguese influence. We came across a fort that was completely in ruin and then drove to Bilad Sur Castle, the main attraction in Sur. Unfortunately, it was closed since it was Saturday.

The 19th-century castle is made of mud and stone and has four towers for defense purposes. It also served as a market, a jail, and was used for festivals.

Then, we drove one hour north to a sinkhole! The road bordered the mountains and the Arabian Sea and was gorgeous. We arrived at Hawiyat Nahm Sink Hole Park. It’s completely flooded with seawater and you can swim there!

The stairs down are steep and the water is very deep!

7 a.m. PAKISTANI BREAKFAST in Muscat, Oman!! Halwa Puri, Chana Dal & Shami Kebab

????OMAN TRAVEL:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

My culture and food adventures in beautiful Muscat, Oman continued at 7 a.m. to have a traditional Pakistani breakfast!

My guide Hussain and I would be eating at Punjab Restaurant & Sweets, a 50-year-old shop that specializes in Pakistani breakfasts. It opens at 5 a.m. every morning and I was feeling hungry!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

Inside, I saw them cooking samosas, aloo parathas, pakoras, shami kebab, laddu, pani puri, karak, and more. As I went further into the kitchen, I also saw them making chicken biryani!

I watched the cooks flatten dough balls into parathas and fry up some puris. Elsewhere, I saw a bunch of Pakistani sweets, and then I sat down with some karak tea. It was frothy, hot, and full of cardamom.

First, they brought us dal chana, raita, halwa, a puri, an omelet, paratha, shami kebabs, veg & meat pakoras, and sweet lassi. The puri was flaky and crispy and amazing with the crumbly halwa. It took me back to my time in Islamabad!

The flaky paratha with the spicy omelet was amazing, as was the savory chana dal. It was light but super flavorful. I also loved the potato and spices in the shami kebab. The pakora actually contained vegetables and meat!

I loved the spices in the pakora. The lassi wasn’t thick like the kinds you get in Punjab. There was also an onion pakora, which I tried with a sweet and sour tomato chutney.

The omelet was amazing with a bit of yogurt and tomato chutney. Then, we had assorted sweets for dessert, including my favorite, rasmalai!

Hussain and I started with the laddu, followed by the decadent rose rasgulla. The barfi was amazing, as was the crumbly and dense milk pira.

The gulab jamun with milk paste was super unique. The milk paste was frozen and tasted so good. The most unique gulab jamun I’ve ever had in my life!

We finished with a hot, thick walnut halwa, which was crumbly, sweet, and decadent. It was my favorite dessert of all of them!

Then, we had some pani puri with a filling of chickpeas, potatoes, onion, cabbage, raita, pani, and the sweet chili chutney. It was a wild, sweet, and slightly spicy combination. The raita cooled it down. I finished by drinking the pani!

The guys there gave it to me for for free and gave us a box of sweets as a gift. We ate roughly half the menu for roughly $10 USD!

Then, we drove to Coffeeologist to get something to help me wake up! I went with a cold saffron latte, which contains saffron cream, milk, and a shot of espresso. It was very unique. They also gave me a blueberry cookie!
