El Mirador 5-day hike | Discovering Lost Mayan Pyramids in the Guatemalan Jungle
El Mirador is a preclassic Mayan city deep in the Northern part of Guatemala. The hikes usually start from Flores (the city which is usually a connection to Tikal - another Mayan city but in a more researched state and very accessible). From Flores people are taken to Carmelita, there we could leave our bags with the mules and start trekking. Altogether it takes 5 days and the leghth of the trek is over 80 km.
I'm Liisu, a 26 year-old doctor from Estonia and in December 2021 I quit my job to travel the world.

One of our favourite experiences in all of our travels so far, hiking 100kms over 5 days to the lost mayan kingdom of El Mirador. We got a shuttle from Flores to Carmelita, where the amazing people from the Carmelita Cooperativa guided us on our expedition through the jungle. We stopped off at campsites along the way and made it to the glorious site of La Danta, the largest mayan pyramid in the whole world! Incredible.

Since I was a kid I always dreamed about visiting the ancient Mayan ruins in Central America. This year that dream finally came true during our visit of Guatemala. We had the chance of visiting the great city of Tikal, but even more spectacular was the 5 days jungle trek through the lowlands to reach El Mirador complex, where we climbed the highest Mayan Pyramid ever built: La Danta. The sounds of the jungle, the close encounters with wildlife, especially the terrifying Howler Monkeys, and all the ancient ruins made this experience truly unforgettable!

Aguateca romvárosát kevesen veszik be a túrájukba, pontosan ezért nagy élmény. Rajtunk kívül senki nem mászkált az esőerdő mélyén 2010 decemberében, csupán a majmok. Azok azonban ezerszám. Nagyszerű élmény volt.

MIRADOR ADVENTURES: Yaxha & Topoxte (Guatemala)
Yaxha and Topoxte are rarely visited ruins 20 kms from the Belizian border. 90% of the tourists go only to Tikal and don't visit this miracle. We don't know a lot about these ruins but Yaxha is the 2nd biggest excaveted ruin in Guatemala. You have a great chance to see a lot of animals, not only birds but crocodiles, big cats and other type of mammals too. Topoxte is a pearl on the other side of the lake, worth to see.

The trips to El Mirador and surrounding archaeological sites can be made in five to seven days, depending on the amount of time and energy of the participants.
Our tours are organized by the Tourism Commission of the Carmelita Community that is made up of community tourism guides that are accredited by INGUAT (Guatemalan Tourism Institute). As well as possessing an abundance of first-hand experience and knowledge about the jungle and its animals, the guides have been trained by archaeologists of the Project El Mirador to provide up to date information about the archaeological sites that are visited.Due to the unique features of this tour, it is necessary that participants are in good physical condition and are able to walk between five and six hours a day.

We have just finished our journey of 6days trekking to El mirador, Guatemala! This is the first day we walked 25Km from Carmelita to El Tintal. The trip is intese, but it was definitely worth it!
