Big Botswana Baecation, Pt 4: Moremi Game Reserve & Okavango Delta (Overlanding Botswana Self Drive)

Overlanding Travel in Botswana

In Part 4 of our Big Botswana Baecation travel vlog, we head to the Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve. En route there, the sandy roads of Botswana nearly rattle us to pieces. And surprisingly, the Wild Dog does something it's never done before: it fails to start. Car trouble right at the start of our Moremi Adventure! Granted, our Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series is a bit of an elderly gent.

Do we manage to coax the 4x4 back to life so we can make it to our intended destination of Third Bridge?! A little bit of yes and a little bit of no, and quite a bit of smoke from one attempted rescue plan!

This part of the trip proves to be extremely adventurous and entertaining (to say the least): Car trouble! Lions at the gate (of an unfenced camp!). Wild Dog pack sighting to outshine our own Wild Dog; And the frequent and very nearby sounds of a big male lion roaring and patrolling right past our camp site. The Okavango Delta lions sure live up to their reputation, and Third Bridge, when we eventually get there, does not disappoint.

93 - Visit to Moremi Game Reserve

Six of us started for a day trip to Moremi Game Reserve during the holidays of Good Friday and Easter in 2019. On 21st of April, we started at 5AM from Maun, reached the park (100KM from Maun) at 8:30AM, returned back to Maun at 5PM. To out utter dissatisfaction could not find a single carnivore or Rhino. This, however cannot be a consolation to the fact that my camera went into coma just before we were going to enter the park.

Botswana/Africa Okavango Delta:
The Okavango River is a river in southwest Africa. It is the fourth-longest river system in southern Africa, running southeastward for 1,600 km (990 mi). It begins in Angola, where it is known as the Cubango River. Further south it forms part of the border between Angola and Namibia, and then flows into Botswana, draining into the Moremi Game Reserve.
Before it enters Botswana, the river drops four meters, across the full 1.2 km-width of the river, in a series of rapids known as Popa Falls, visible when the river is low, as during the dry season.
Discharging to an endorheic basin, the Okavango does not have an outlet to the sea. Instead, it empties into a swamp in the Kalahari Desert, known as the Okavango Delta or Okavango Alluvial Fan. In the rainy season there is an outflow to the Boteti River which in turn seasonally discharges to the Makgadikgadi Pans, which features an expansive area of rainy season wetland where tens of thousands of flamingos congregate each summer.Part of the river's flow fills Lake Ngami. Noted for its wildlife, the Okavango area contains Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve.

The Okavango Delta (or Okavango Swamp), in Botswana, is a large inland delta, formed where the Okavango River reaches a tectonic trough in the central part of the endorheic basin of the Kalahari. All the water reaching the Delta is ultimately evaporated and transpired, and does not flow into any sea or ocean. Each year approximately 11 cubic kilometres of water spread over the 6,000-15,000 km² area. Some flood-waters drain into Lake Ngami. The Moremi Game Reserve, a National Park, spreads across the eastern side of the Delta.
The area was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that mostly dried up by the early Holocene. Although the Okavango Delta is widely believed to be the world largest inland delta, it is, in fact not. In Africa alone there are two larger similar geological features - the Sudd on the Nile in South Sudan, and the Inner Niger Delta in Mali.

FloodsThe Okavango is produced by seasonal flooding. The Okavango River drains the summer (January--February) rainfall from the Angola highlands and the surge flows 1,200 kilometres in approximately one month. The waters then spread over the 250 km by 150 km area of the delta over the next four months (March--June). The high temperature of the delta causes rapid transpiration and evaporation, resulting in a cycle of rising and falling water level that was not fully understood until the early 20th century. The flood peaks between June and August, during Botswana's dry winter months, when the delta swells to three times its permanent size, attracting animals from kilometres around and creating one of Africa's greatest concentrations of wildlife.
The delta is very flat, with less than 2 metres variation in height across its 15,000 km².

Where the water goes
Every year, circa 11 cubic kilometres (11,000,000,000,000 litres) of water flow into the delta. Approximately 60% is consumed through transpiration by plants, 36% by evaporation, 2% percolates into the aquifer system; and 2% flows into Lake Ngami. This turgid outflow means that the delta is unable to flush out the minerals carried by the river and is liable to become increasingly salty and uninhabitable, but this effect is reduced by the low salt content which collects around the roots of the plants. The low salinity of the water also means that the floods do not greatly enrich the floodplain with nutrients.

Private Charter Safari Bush Flight From Maun to Kanana Camp, Ker & Downey Botswana. Flight Review

The thrilling bush flights between safari camps in Botswana is part of the charm and adventure of safaris. This was the charter flight from Maun Airport to Ker & Downey Botswana Kanana Camp, giving us a glimpse into the daily life of a Bush Pilot.

A hidden jewel on the Xudum River, Kanana is located in the southwest of the Okavango Delta. The area encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn, and is home to a myriad of birds, plants and animals. The nature of the habitat means it is the perfect place to experience the diversity of species found within the Okavango Delta. Guests are accommodated in seven spacious twin and double-bedded safari tents, each en-suite bathroom has a large walk-in shower and luxurious fittings.

The annual floods transform parts of this concession into a true water paradise, offering guests the best of both worlds. Due to the camps location guests can experience magnificent game sightings during drives as well as the unique experience of exploring the delta’s beautiful waterways by boat or Mokoro. You may actually enjoy the breath-taking spectacle of the water visibly rising around the camp’s raised teak decks. The Sleep Out Deck offers guests the opportunity to spend the night out under the magnificent African night sky. Birding is spectacular with Kanana hosting a seasonal heronry that is one of the largest in Southern Africa, a highlight that converts all visitors to avid ‘twitchers’. Guided bush walks are highly recommended as is fishing for tilapia, African pike and sharptooth catfish.

Kanana’s private concession location allows guided walks, Mokoro excursions and night drives in addition to game drives, motor boating and fishing. Wildlife is in abundance with frequent predator sightings such as lion, leopard and wilddog all making Kanana their hunting grounds. The camp also affords private access to one of the largest heronries not only in the Okavango Delta but Southern Africa and is an excellent area for birding with regular sightings of Pels Fishing Owl.

3rd Bridge, Moremi. Botswana 4X4 Road Conditions. Travel guide.

Although the distance from 3rd Bridge to Xakanaxa is only about 20km, allow a couple of hours driving time. There are numerous loops and scenic drives along this route.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Botswana:
You travel through Mopani forest and grasslands surrounded by blue lagoons on your way to Xakanaxa. At places the road can be very sandy. Once again it must be emphasized that the condition of these roads can change drastically, and vary from wet to dry season.
It is wise to be prepared. Ensure that your vehicle is equipped with a jack - preferably the high-lift type and engage into the right gear when approaching loose sand or muddy pools.
Don't let the road condition stop you from exploring the wilderness. The harder it gets to reach a destination, the more rewarding the result will be. All you need is a sound, well equipped 4x4 vehicle, common sense and a will to answer the beckoning call of the wild.
