The highly anticipated Montserrat St. Patrick's Festival celebrations. Montserrat is the only island outside of Ireland that celebrates St. Patrick's day as a national holiday. Montserrat is known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean because of its lush green landscape and the fact that many of its early settlers were from Ireland. It’s the only place outside of Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s day as a national holiday.
On Montserrat, Saint Patrick’s day became a national holiday in 1985 but not to celebrate St. Patrick, who is patron saint of Ireland. And the 10-day festival which takes is not just about parties and fetes although speaking from experience they are really good.
Montserrat’s St. Patrick’s festival actually commemorates the enslaved Africans known as the freedom fighters who lost their lives after their planned Saint Patrick’s ay slave rebellion set for March 17th, 1768 was discovered. Although unsuccessful, it was the beginning of movements for the abolition of slavery on the island.
So the St. Patrick’s festival is really about honoring the memory of those freedom fighters.
Black people, people of African descent and the role they played in helping to bring an end of slavery. On Montserrat, the holiday weaves together two heritages, acknowledging the early Irish influence while honoring the enslaved Africans who rebelled against it.

Getting to Montserrat
We leave the bitter cold of Quebec's winter and head to Montserrat in the Caribbean. Our trip is home from Montreal airport to Antigua, and from Antigua we take a small plane to Monserrat. It was a long and stressfull day due to a storm in Montreal which made us take off close to 2 hours late. The next few videos will show more of the island.

Since the volcano started erupting, the beaches have become deserted. After a recent storm washed all kinds of driftwood up on the quiet beach in front of our house we made a small fire and picnic for the 4th of July.

Le 18 juillet 1995, le volcan de la Soufrière, jusqu'alors en sommeil, entra en activité et une première éruption causa des dégâts à la capitale Plymouth.
Le 25 juin 1997, une violente éruption entraîna la destruction totale de Plymouth, de son aéroport, et ravagea toute la moitié sud de l'île, la rendant inhabitable. 19 personnes ont perdu la vie lors de cette éruption.

Take a 3 hour hike in 16 minutes. Former students and teachers of the Montserrat Secondary School hike from Drummonds to Rendezvous Beach, the only white-sand beach on Montserrat. The hike was led by James 'Scriber' Daley.
