Montevideo is the southernmost capital city in the Americas and the biggest city in a charming little country called Uruguay. We start walking from the Artigas Mausoleum in Plaza de la Independencia, in the neighbourhood of Ciudad Vieja or Old Town. From this place we can watch beautiful art deco buildings, colonial homes and landmarks including the towering Palacio Salvo and neoclassical performance hall Solís Theatre and Mercado del Puerto, a popular port steakhouses market. Best starting point is the Plaza Independencia (Montevideo main square). From here you can see the remains of the city walls and town gate, which is the beginning of the original Old Town. This is a nice area to walk around in. From old to new parts of the city. Some places to go shopping, a few places to eat as well. Clean area with a lot of people out and about. Locals and tourists all mesh in this area. I found it to be worth the stroll down the street to check it out. Good spot for some pics!
There are two explanations for the name MONTEVIDEO: First comes from the Portuguese Monte vide eu which means I see a mountain and the second could be the location of the city in a map as Monte VI De Este a Oeste meaning The sixth mountain from east to west.

In 2018, it was classified as a beta global city ranking eighth in Latin America and 84th in the world. Montevideo hosted every match during the first FIFA World Cup, in 1930. Described as a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life, and a thriving tech center and entrepreneurial culture, Montevideo ranked eighth in Latin America on the 2013 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.
It is the hub of commerce and higher education in Uruguay as well as its chief port. The city is also the financial hub of Uruguay and the cultural anchor of a metropolitan area with a population of around 2 million.

Then we visited Emilio Reus Street, where ancient houses (in terms of Uruguay because they were built in the late XIX century) were painted in bright colors several years ago (1992) and became a point of attraction. Best starting point is the Plaza Independencia (Montevideo main square). From here you can see the remains of the city walls and town gate, which is the beginning of the original Old Town. This is a nice area to walk around in. From old to new parts of the city. Some places to go shopping, a few places to eat as well. Clean area with a lot of people out and about.
