Is it worth visiting Uruguay for just 1 day? Your Ultimate Montevideo Travel Guide!

If you're in Uruguay for just one day, or 24 hours, here is what I would recommend doing.
Of course there are so many more things to see in the country, including Colonia del Sacramento and Punta Del Este, but if you are on a time crunch, then stick to the suburbs of Ciudad Vieja, Parque Rodo, Pocitos and Carrasco, to pack the most into your vacation.
Everything from coffee spots, lunch ideas, museum lists, walking paths and of course, the nightlife. So whether you're coming with your family and kids, or you're young, single, and ready to mingle, there is something here for everyone.

Travelling to MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay + Trying URUGUAYAN STEAK + Tannat Wine in the Capital!

In today's video, we'll be travelling from Colonia del Sacramento to Montevideo - the capital of Uruguay - and then we'll be trying Uruguayan steak! So we started the day off in Colonia where we had a few hours to spare before catching the bus to the capital. We spent the morning enjoying a leisurely stroll through the old town, and we also made time to climb the lighthouse, which offers beautiful views of the River Plate and Colonia's old town.

We then made our way to the bus terminal, where we enjoyed a quick lunch of empanadas before getting on the bus to Montevideo. It was a 3-hour journey across farmland and rural towns. Overall, a very enjoyable and easy trip.

Once we arrived in Montevideo, we checked into our apartment overlooking Plaza Independencia, and then it was time to start thinking about food. Of course, for our first meal in the capital, we decided to try Uruguayan steak. Much like neighbouring Argentina, Uruguay enjoys a very high reputation for the quality of its beef.

We ate at a steakhouse called El Fogón, where we ordered the 'entrecot', which is the ribeye steak and one of the most popular cuts of meat in Uruguay. We paired this with a Tannat wine, which is the national grape of Uruguay. Overall a great meal and a wonderful start to our trip in Montevideo!

Restaurant address: El Fogón, San José 1080, 11100 Montevideo, Uruguay

A day trip to Uruguay (Buenos Aires to Montevideo)

We’d only been in Argentina a couple of days, but it was already time to move on, albeit temporarily, to the next country, as we took a day trip to Uruguay. We travelled from Buenos Aires to Montevideo and got there early, so we could check out as much of the Uruguayan capital as we possibly could.

MONTEVIDEO IS ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF URUGUAY

As the southernmost capital city in the Americas, Montevideo has pleasant weather year-round, and it is ranked first for quality of life in Latin America, according to Mercer’s report. Montevideo is the country’s capital city and is home to 1.3 million people, which is almost half of Uruguay’s population. If you are looking for a pleasant and comfortable city with a calm feel yet plenty to do, Montevideo is your ideal destination.

WHY INTERN IN MONTEVIDEO?
Montevideo is often thought of as the “little sister” to Buenos Aires. While both cities share similar cultures, delicious cuisine, intriguing history, and of course, the Rio de la Plata, Montevideo encapsulates a more tranquil, low-key vibe. There are a nice variety of activities, since Montevideo has a vibrant music, theater, and arts scene, as well as many museums, notable sports teams, and outdoor leisure spaces. As one of Latin America’s most liberal cities, you’ll feel right at home in no time.

The city also has an international feel to it, thanks to its many cultural centers and its role as administrative headquarters for Mercosur and ALADI, Latin America’s trading blocs, which has led to Montevideo being compared to the role of Brussels in Europe. Due to its location and economic stability, the city is also becoming a huge player in the entrepreneurial and technological spaces.

One of Montevideo’s greatest assets is its location on the coast and its vast open spaces, inclusive of the “Rambla” that runs the whole coastline of the city. This 22-kilometer ocean-side promenade is a perfect place to take a break from the office, do some fitness, or watch the sky change colors during sunset. Plus, Montevideo is known for being one of the safest capital cities in all of Latin America, as well as South America's highest-ranking city for quality of living.

FUN FACTS ABOUT MONTEVIDEO
Montevideo hosted every match during the first FIFA World Cup in 1930.

Montevideo was established in 1724 by a Spanish soldier, Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, as a strategic move amidst the Spanish-Portuguese dispute over the region.

The Solís Theatre is the most prominent theatre in Uruguay and the oldest in South America.

Uruguay is the most secular country in Latin America.

Tango, candombe, and murga are the three main styles of music in Montevideo.

Top Tourist Attractions in Montevideo: Walk around Plaza Independencia, Have Lunch and Dinner at Mercado del Puerto, Take Photos of the Historical Salvo Palace, Bury Your Toes in the Sand at Pocitos, Explore Museo del Gaucho and Currency, Have a Picnic at Prado Park, Have Fun at the Carnival Museum, Stop by the Pittamiglio Castle

Montevideo, Uruguay guide and walking tour

Montevideo is kept very clean. It appears friendly and inviting, it is opposite Buenos Aries, and where the Tango was first danced by European immigrants, slaves, and the working classes.

The Tango is one of the most sexual, artistic, and influential dances in history and both sides of the river argue as to where it was developed. The first thing that hits you is how clean and friendly Uruguay is. As you walk from the port there is a tourist office and helpful guides, and the city has a walking tour map to help you orientate yourself. Jean will walk you around that, which we managed to do before breakfast and our plane home.

Terminal Tres Cruces bus station is very centrally located in Montevideo. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach the city center by taxi.
The city center is small enough to be explored on foot.

• Solis Theater: Solis Theater is the oldest theater in Uruguay. It was built in 1856.
• Plaza Independencia is the most important square in Montevideo. Palacio Salvo, once the tallest building in South America, is located here. You can take a tour to see the magnificent view of the city from its roof.

My experience immigrating to Uruguay | 2 year Update | Expat Diaries

If you're new here, I'm maddie, and 2.5 years ago I moved from Australia to Montevideo Uruguay with my Fiance. We moved here because Alejandro has family here, but we never expected things to be quite so difficult. So living here, as foreigners, with very little support during one of the most dramatic changes in the world (2020) this was my experience!
Of course I could talk about so much more, so if you have any questions please comment and I will reply.

Visiting MONTEVIDEO's Attractions + Eating CHIVITO (Uruguay's National Dish) ????????

Hello from Montevideo! In today’s video, we'll be visiting some of the city's attractions and also sampling Uruguay's national dish - chivito! We started the morning with a visit to the iconic Palacio Salvo, which is a landmark in Montevideo’s Old Town. This was the tallest building in all of South America up until the year 1935. If you think Palacio Salvo looks familiar, that’s because you can find its twin, Palacio Barolo, across the pond in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Both were designed by the Italian architect Mario Palanti. Originally, the idea for this particular structure was to build a hotel, however, in the end only one floor ever functioned as that, and all the other floors were turned into apartments and office space. During our tour, we also visited the viewing deck on the 25th floor, where you get a bird’s eye view of Montevideo.

Then, we continued to Bar Hispánico for lunch, where we ordered chivito - Uruguay's national dish! Chivito consists of a beef steak, which can be served in sandwich or plated form. It is then topped with a mountain of mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, mayonnaise, olives, bacon, beets, eggs, ham, fries and just about anything else you can imagine. It's a must-try dish for anyone visiting Uruguay.

The following day we explored the beachside neighbourhood of Pocitos, which is beautiful for a stroll along the waterfront. Fun fact: Montevideo's rambla is the longest continuous sidewalk in the world stretching 22.2 kilometres in length down the coast! This is also where you'll find the Montevideo city sign for that classic postcard shot of the city. The sign gets repainted quite often, so you never know what colours or patterns you'll get on your visit.

We hope you enjoy this video and we'll see you again in the next one!
