Katse dam overflow | THE OVERFLOW | vlog
katse dam, One of the most ambitious engineering projects ever undertaken in South Africa, Katse is the continent's second-largest double-curvature arch dam. Some 710-metres long and 185-metres high, it impounds a deep, squiggly, multi-tendrilled reservoir that extends back more than 30km along the Malibamat'so River when full and has a total surface area of 38.5 square kilometres.
Katse Dam, Lesotho Reputedly named after a wealthy local farmer, Katse was constructed in the early 1990s as the centrepiece of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). Water from Katse is funnelled through an 82km underground tunnel into the Ash River near Clarens, South Africa, from where it flows along a succession of natural waterways into the Vaal Dam, the main reservoir in the industrialised and densely populated South African province of Gauteng.
Visitors coming on the A25 from Maseru will pass the tunnel's intake tower to their left as they cross the reservoir on Mphorosane Bridge near Ha Lejone, some 30km before reaching the dam itself. Also visible from the bridge is a cluster of circular fish farms that produces the trout for which Lesotho is famed.
Informative guided tours of the dam wall and boat trips onto the reservoir can be arranged at the helpful LHWP Visitors' Centre, which stands right above the dam and has an interior designed to mimic it.

Camping in LESOTHO, the kingdom in the sky | Overland Honeymoon: Ep. 5
Our trip continues through Lesotho - traveling from Thaba-Tseka to Katse Dam. We wild camped here, a few kilometers from the dam. It was a beautiful spot surrounded by water and corn fields.
The next day we traveled to Marakabei Lodge. We had the braai area for ourselves, wood, and clean bathrooms to use. The lodge dog and the cat kept us entertained while we enjoyed a rainy but lovely night's stay.
The next day we drove over the Mohale Dam. Clear skies made flying the drone possible, and capturing that view while we went over was STUNNING.
After a picnic next to the Jordan River and a wrong turn over a beautiful mountain pass, we finally made it to our 19th camp spot at Maluti Stay Lodge. In episode six, we head out to our final destination in Lesotho - SEMONKONG.

We visited the Mohale Dam in Lesotho, Southern Africa but arrived during lunchtime so had to wait for the guide to return from lunch. There was a group there from the National University of Lesotho, waiting for the tour to start. To while away the waiting time, they started singing and dancing. It was great to see them having so much fun and we got a great kick out of watching them.

Tsoelike Pass, Lesotho - Mountain Passes of South Africa
This amazing and very steep (mainly) gravel pass descends steeply to the dual bridges over the Tsoelike River. The newer on is a concrete bridge already showing signs of flood damage, whilst the older, graceful suspension bridge spans the river well above the flood peak level, still stands intact and in surprisingly good condition, considering it was built in 1930 by German missionaries.
The pass is located in the southern quartile of Lesotho, fairly close to the border with South Africa. GPS S30.024641 E28.722584
The climb out to the northern side of the valley is much steeper and peppered with tight hairpins. The photo right at the end of the video puts it all into perspective.
