Atiu, Cook Islands, South Pacific

Atiu is also known as Enuamanu which means land of the birds. But there's much more to this, the third largest of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. This is an introduction to a unique place where tourism is still in its infancy. Visitors can expect to be treated as guests and discover fascinating places and warm and friendly people.

The music is Atiu Enua (Kapa Rim) bny Piritau Nga. It's from the the islanders' award winning performance at Te Maeva Nui, 2007.

I gratefuly acknowledge the opening footage of the kopeka from the Cook Islands Biodiversity and Natural Heritage website (cookislands.bishopmusuem.org) - an extraordinary piece of work by Gerald MaCormack of Rarotonga which I urge you to look at.

You can find out more about Atiu and the other 14 islands of the Cook Islands at -- the most detailed guide on the net to an unspoiled South Pacific paradise.

Atiu Cook Islands

Atiu is the actual island Captain Cook found when he discovered the Cook Islands. It is inhabited by less that 500 people.

As with the other Cook Islands I have filmed, Atiu has a coastline unique to itself. The coral reef shelf surrounding the island is closer to the shore than Rarotonga and Aitutaki and varies from beautiful beaches to coral cliffs. The island is also known for its Anatakitaki Kopeka Bird Caves and locally grown coffee.

This is part of a series of videos on the Cook Islands.

Mitiaro, Cook Islands

Harbouring some of the most stunning subterranean limestone caves and pools to be found in the Pacific, Mitiaro is a natural playground with cave pools, white sandy beaches, and fossilized coral formations.

The caves and pools are fed by the islands’ underground water reserves. Vai Nauri – a deep emerald cave pool, is a must-do when visiting. With a population less than 200, the gentle warmth of the community and the pride in their island is a marque of the island people.

Humpback whales can be seen passing the Cook Islands from July right through to October. The whales often swim close to the reef so you can watch them from shore.

Mitiaro in the Cook Islands

From Here is the short interview I had with Glenda Tuaine of Cook Islands Tourism about her favorite place in the islands and why you should consider it when traveling to the South Pacific. It really is beautiful. Sorry that this video was so dark. It was at dinner and a spur of the moment interview request on my part.

What to see in Atiu | The Cook Islands

Home to approximately 400 proud warrior people, there are few untouched places left in the world like Atiu. Over 8 million years old, our 3rd largest island is one big adventure playground, ancient and unspoiled. Rich in culture and history, Atiu is an eco-lovers paradise.

As one of the three Southern Group islands known as Nga-Pu-Toru, Atiu attracts the spirit of the explorer. With no nightclubs, virtually no township and a couple of cafes along with precious little traffic – this is a true escape. Life is pretty much the same as it was some 25 years ago and therefore offers a really genuine insight into island living with its five small villages of Tengatangi, Areora, Ngatiarua, Mapumai and Teenui nestled in the centre. Gardens thrive on Atiu’s rich soil and on certain days the soft aroma of organically grown coffee beans roasting wafts past from plantations that produce some of the best Arabica coffee in the Pacific.
