Minsk, Belarus 2017 - Where Soviet Communism meets Capitalism

This VLOG is about my visa-free visit to the beautiful city of Minsk, the capital of Belarus, in April 2017. The video features the main sights, Soviet architecture, Belarusian churches, Communist monuments, Capitalist businesses, Minsk metro (subway) and much more (contents with time code see below).

Minsk is a city with an interesting history. The city was destroyed and fought over many times. 80% of the city were destroyed in World War II. Minsk also lost a huge part of its population in the war. It recovered during Soviet times from 60,000 to around 1 million inhabitants. It still has a Soviet vibe - here you can experience a Communist country in the 21st century. But there are also many other things to do in Minsk: there are great bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants - and there are various modern shopping malls that offer anything you desire.

Minsk is a heavily patrolled and very safe city. I had no issues walking around town day and night. The streets are VERY clean and people very friendly and helpful. The metro system is efficient and cheap. Whenever public transportation was not available, Uber worked very well. I was positively surprised about Belarus in terms of hospitality. It was quite the opposite of the terrible reputation of “the last dictatorship in Europe”, as Western media outlets sometimes like to call it.

It is now possible to visit Belarus for five days without a visa, as long as you enter the country at Minsk National Airport. I spent three days in Minsk and another day in Brest to see the massive Brest Fortress (not included in this video). There is a lot to discover in this beautiful country, far off the beaten path, and I can’t wait to come back another time to see more of Belarus!

Here’s what to expect in the following eight minutes:
00:00 Flight to Minsk with Belavia Airlines

Walking around Minsk - 2017

Visiting Minsk in July 2017. It's a truly amazing place, clean and peaceful. While parts of it reminds you of the Sovjet times, it it astonishing how much is new. The city is developing quickly with construction projects being visible everywhere. Compared to Kiev, things in Minsk are a lot more in order. It seems that the whole city is functionning like a Swiss watch. Traffic is running smoothly and there is no visible crime. Also economically Belarus is better off than it's neighbor Ukraine. GDP per capita is 6200 USD and official unemployment is just 1%.

Belarus introduced visa-free travel for up to 5 days for citizens of many countries. Still, I did only spot very few foreigners. I do recommend visiting this great country and amazing city.

???????? Minsk, Belarus - Unbelievable post soviet city

Minsk (Belarusian: Мінск [mʲinsk], traditional Belarusian: Менск [mʲensk], Russian: Минск, Polish: Mińsk, Lithuanian: Minskas) is the capital and largest city of Belarus, located on the Svislač and the Nyamiha Rivers. As the capital, Minsk has a special administrative status in Belarus and is the administrative centre of Minsk Region (voblasć) and Minsk District (rajon). The population in January 2018 was 1,982,444,[5] (not including suburbs) making Minsk the 11th most populous city in Europe. Minsk is the administrative capital of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and seat of its Executive Secretary.

The earliest historical references to Minsk date to the 11th century (1067), when it was noted as a provincial city within the Principality of Polotsk.[6] The settlement developed on the rivers. In 1242, Minsk became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It received town privileges in 1499.[7]

From 1569, it was a capital of the Minsk Voivodeship, in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was part of a region annexed by the Russian Empire in 1793, as a consequence of the Second Partition of Poland. From 1919 to 1991, after the Russian Revolution, Minsk was the capital of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, in the Soviet Union. In June 2019, Minsk hosted the 2019 European Games.
