Minsk (Things to do - Places to Visit) - MINSK Top Tourist Places
Capital of Belarus
Minsk, capital of Belarus, is a modern city dominated by monumental Stalinist architecture. Many of its museums, theaters and other cultural attractions line Independence Avenue (Praspyekt Nyezalyezhnastsi), a wide, 15km-long thoroughfare leading to vast Independence Square.

Looming over this iconic plaza are massive KGB Headquarters and the neo-Romanesque Church of Saints Simon and Helena, also known as Red Church.

Minsk, Belarus 2017 - Where Soviet Communism meets Capitalism

This VLOG is about my visa-free visit to the beautiful city of Minsk, the capital of Belarus, in April 2017. The video features the main sights, Soviet architecture, Belarusian churches, Communist monuments, Capitalist businesses, Minsk metro (subway) and much more (contents with time code see below).

Minsk is a city with an interesting history. The city was destroyed and fought over many times. 80% of the city were destroyed in World War II. Minsk also lost a huge part of its population in the war. It recovered during Soviet times from 60,000 to around 1 million inhabitants. It still has a Soviet vibe - here you can experience a Communist country in the 21st century. But there are also many other things to do in Minsk: there are great bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants - and there are various modern shopping malls that offer anything you desire.

Minsk is a heavily patrolled and very safe city. I had no issues walking around town day and night. The streets are VERY clean and people very friendly and helpful. The metro system is efficient and cheap. Whenever public transportation was not available, Uber worked very well. I was positively surprised about Belarus in terms of hospitality. It was quite the opposite of the terrible reputation of “the last dictatorship in Europe”, as Western media outlets sometimes like to call it.

It is now possible to visit Belarus for five days without a visa, as long as you enter the country at Minsk National Airport. I spent three days in Minsk and another day in Brest to see the massive Brest Fortress (not included in this video). There is a lot to discover in this beautiful country, far off the beaten path, and I can’t wait to come back another time to see more of Belarus!

Here’s what to expect in the following eight minutes:
00:00 Flight to Minsk with Belavia Airlines
00:24 Walking around Minsk including the National Library Observation Deck
01:13 Where Communism meets Capitalism
01:44 Island of Tears – Afghan War Monument
02:06 Opera House and Ballet Theatre
02:22 Yanka Kupala Park, squirrels
02:57 Change of guards at Victory Square
04:17 Minsk metro (subway) ride
05:02 Holy Spirit Cathedral and Old Town
05:13 Free Walking Tour around the city center – highly recommended! (freetour.travelbel.by)
06:11 Independence Square
06:54 Stolitsa Underground Shopping Center
07:04 Old Town by night
07:31 Victory Square by night
07:52 Another Minsk metro (subway) ride

Minsk in One day - Trip Belarus | Wanderer's Bag

When nearly all Belarusians fly from Vilnius or Riga, the two of us landed a great ticket for Sri Lanka..from MINSK! We hopped on an early morning train from Vilnius, equipped with transit visas for Belarus and in just 2,5h we were ready to explore Minsk. Politics aside, it is a super cozy and one of the cleanest cities I have been to and makes for a wonderful weekend city break. While if you ever FLY from or to Belarus, the airport is about an 1h ride - there are minibuses departing central bus station for a few bucks per person.

TIP: On our way back from Sri Lanka, at the Minsk airport they stamped my passport as visa upon arrival, with which I can only leave the country through Minsk's airport. I had a double entry transit visa, and the officer for some reason ignored it, but luckily noticed her mistake and stamped the visa, else I would have been turned around at the border - we were taking a bus back home to Vilnius.

Grodno Belarus Travel Guide - City Highlights & How To Enter Visa Free | 90+ Countries with 3 kids

Today we decided to explore the city sitting on the final frontier between the current European Union and what was once the former Soviet Union. Grodno is a city in the far west of the country, just 12 miles from Poland. Some also call Hrodna and it is a hidden pearl in Belarus. Most tourists visiting Belarus stick to Minsk and the country’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites at Nesvizh and Mir but if you ever have a chance to visit we would definitely recommend visiting Grodno as well.

One of the reasons is for sure the Jesuit Cathedral. This amazing church is situated in front of the Soviet Square with its verdant green and white architecture gazes down upon everything around it. The interior is even more stunning. This church is the city’s main cathedral and dates back to 1678. A few hundred years on, it still acts as a central monument in the city and is popular for all visitors. It is known as the St Francis Xavier Cathedral and regular services are held.

Another reason why we loved Grodno were the leafy parks. The Zhilibera park is the most central and it features an important Soviet War memorial. It’s also the venue for many fun fairs and markets. It is located just right by the river and it has quite a few cafes and cosy bars with beer gardens.

We hope you enjoy the video!

Belarus Travel Video

Belarus Travel Video - Eastern Europes outcast, Belarus lies at the edge of the region and seems determined to avoid integration with the rest of the continent at all costs. Taking its lead from the Soviet Union rather than the European Union, this pint-sized dictatorship may seem like a strange choice for travellers, but its isolation remains at the heart of its appeal.

While the rest of Eastern Europe has charged headlong into capitalism, Belarus offers a chance to visit a Europe with almost no advertising, litter or graffiti. Far more than just the last dictatorship in Europe - Condoleezza Rices phrase has come to haunt Alexander Lukashenkos democratically challenged country - Belarus is a land of earthy humour, friendly people and courage in the face of bleak political adversity.

Outside the capital, Belarus offers a simple yet pleasing landscape of cornflower fields, thick primeval forests and picturesque villages. While travellers will always be subject to curiosity, theyll invariably also be on the receiving end of extremely warm hospitality.

While the countrys flattening in WWII means that theres relatively little of historic interest to see, Belarus three most appealing cities - Minsk, Brest and Vitsebsk - offer a surprising amount to visitors - from nightlife and cosmopolitan spark in the capital, to the tragic remnants of the Brest Fortress, and the childhood home of painter Marc Chagall in Vitsebsk. The country also offers two excellent national parks, both well worth a visit. Europes largest mammal, the zoobr, or European bison, can be seen at Belavezhskaya Pushcha National Park, while the Pripyatsky National Park, the lungs of Europe, offers great birdwatching in its vast w
