MICRONESIA: The famous STONE MONEY ???? (Rai), island of Yap (Pacific Ocean)

Rai stones (or fei stones, stone money) on the island of Yap, Federated States of Micronesia, Pacific Ocean - famous stone money (Rai stones or fei stones) of Yap island. Let's travel to the Federated States of Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean and let's go to the island of YAP where we will view the 'stone money' (Rai stones or fei stones) rocks that just lay around and have been here for centuries.
A rai stone (or fei stone) is one of many large artifacts that were manufactured and treasured by the native inhabitants of the Yap islands in Micronesia. They are also known as Yapese stone money or just stone money.
The Yap islands group is part of Micronesia and has a very peculiar currency: stone. Stone money known as “Rai” are large stone disks, sometimes measuring up to 4 meters, with a hole in the middle that was used for carrying them. It was and still is used as a trading currency there.
Yap or Wa′ab classically refers to an island located in the Caroline Islands of the western Pacific Ocean, and a part of the Federated States of Micronesia.
The Micronesian island of Yap is known for its stone money, known as Rai or Fei: large doughnut-shaped, carved disks of (usually) calcite, up to 4 m (13 ft) in diameter (most are much smaller). The smallest can be as little as 3.5 centimetres (1.4 in) in diameter. There are around 6,000 of the large, circular stone disks carved out of limestone formed from aragonite and calcite crystals. Rai stones were quarried on several of the Micronesian islands, mainly Palau, but briefly on Guam as well, and transported to Yap for use as money. They have been used in trade by the Yapese as a form of currency.

The World's Least Populated Capital City - Ngerulmud, Palau

Ngerulmud, Palau - The World's Least Populated Capital City

Ngerulmud is the seat of government of the Republic of Palau, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. It replaced Koror City, Palau's largest city, as capital in 2006. The settlement is located in the state of Melekeok on Babeldaob, the country's largest island, located 20 kilometres (12 miles) northeast of Koror City and 2 km (1 mile) northwest of Melekeok City.

A 2013 piece in The Wall Street Journal reported that the capitol building, which was unsuited to the local climate, had put Palau in debt, and a fault in the ventilation system had recently caused a mold infestation. In April 2013, Ngerulmud's post office was closed permanently, as part of cost-cutting measures implemented by the postmaster, Tommy Sinsak.

In July 2014, Ngerulmud hosted the official opening of the 45th Pacific Islands Forum. However, the majority of events at the forum were held in Koror, with the leader's retreat held in Peleliu State.[10][11] In February 2016, Ngerulmud hosted the 16th Micronesian Presidents' Summit, which was attended by the presidents of Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Guam ( /ˈɡwɑːm/ (help·info); Chamorro: Guåhån)is an island in the western Pacific Ocean and is an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. It is one of five U.S. territories with an established civilian government.[3][4] The island's capital is Hagåtña (formerly Agana). Guam is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands.

The Chamorros, Guam's indigenous people, first populated the island approximately 4,000 years ago.[5] The island has a long history of European colonialism beginning on March 6, 1521 with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan and again in 1668, when the first Spanish colony was established following the arrival of settlers including Padre San Vitores, a Catholic missionary. The island was controlled by Spain until 1898, when it was surrendered to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris following Spanish American War.

As the largest island in Micronesia and the only American-held island in the region before World War II, Guam was captured by the Japanese on December 8, 1941, hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and was occupied for two and a half years.

During the occupation, the people of Guam suffered terrible atrocities[6], including torture, beheadings, and rape, and were forced to adopt the Japanese culture, including the change of the islands name to Ō-miya Jima or Great Shrine Island. Guam was subject to fierce fighting when American troops recaptured the island on July 21, 1944, a date commemorated every year as Liberation Day, in a celebration that lasts all month[citation needed]. Today Guam's economy is supported by its number one industry, tourism, which is primarily comprised of visitors from Japan. Guams second largest source of income is the United States military.[7]

EXPLORING POHNPEI MICRONESIA | Pacific Island Travel Vlog

We did an adult thing and rented a car abroad for the first time!

Have you ever waded through torso high water to explore ancient ruins? Getting to Nan Madol was quite the experience haha

About Us

We met in college and started a five year journey to graduate, get jobs, pay off student loans and save money to travel. After getting married we bought a one way ticket to Greece in July of 2021 and have been traveling around the Globe since. Living abroad definitely brings some unique experiences.

These laidback Youtube videos will be our way of keeping in touch with family and friends as we explore different countries, try new and strange foods (and of course pizza), and see how many times we can avoid airplane fares. These homevideos will be the only souvenir we end up with at the end (only because nothing else will fit in our bags).

Thanks for watching!

Island Hopper to POHNPEI, MICRONESIA from the Marshall Islands! | Pacific Island Travel Vlog

We are going to the beautiful Island of POHNPEI! Other islands of FSM include Yap, Chuuk, and Kosrae (which the island hopper lands on almost all of them!).

Warning - if you get motion sick or don't like itty bitty airplane run ways - the United Island Hopper from Hawaii to Guam might not be for you. There were some ROUGH landings haha

But we survived!

And we had the most amazing time in Pohnpei! Most of our days consisted of getting work done in the room, a meal a day at the attached restaurant, and then walking into town with spray because a few of the dogs were not very happy.
