For my last week in Mexico we went on a big road trip in Chiapas for more than a week. Starting in Tuxtla we explored a number of beautiful sights and things to do in Chiapas which can hardly be found in guides. Of course we also wanted to visit popular sights such as Palenque but we managed to make our way down along the border to Guatemala to see the beautiful jungle and the maya sights of Bonampak & Yaxchilan which are harder to access.

You can take this video as a guide but please be aware to take some precaution and do your own research about road conditions / road blocks etc. before you go. Please make sure to avoid driving at night and plan your travel schedule accordingly!

All Things to do in Chiapas, Mexico as shown in this episode:
- Cenote Chucumaltik, near Comitan
- El Chiflon waterfalls
- Lagunas de Montebello
- Causas Verdes Las Nubes

CHIAPAS, MEXICO | 7 Best Places To Visit In Chiapas, Mexico

We explored the best places to go in Chiapas during an amazing 12-day road trip. In this video, we break down the best places to go in Chiapas, Mexico from our perspective. We had an amazing time visiting these Chiapas destinations and would highly recommend a road trip of your own one day to see them! Places we visited included: El Chiffon, Lagunas de Montebello, Las Nubes, the Lacandon Jungle, Palenque, San Cristobal de las Casas, and the Sumidero Canyon. Enjoy our video on the best places to go in Chiapas!

1. El Chiflón
The first stop on our Chiapas road trip was El Chiflón, near the city of Comitán. This is possibly the best place to go in Chiapas because of its otherworldly beauty. El Chiflon had some of the most beautiful waterfalls we have ever seen in our lives.

2. Lagunas de Montebello
Only 85 kilometres, or 53 miles, South from El Chiflon are the Lagunas de Montebello. This national park consists of 59 multi-coloured lakes in a pine forest. It’s a great place to hike, horse-back ride, drive around, and explore the lakes by traditional “balsa” boats.

3. Las Nubes
The next stop on our road trip was Las Nubes. The town and waterfalls are tucked away in the Chiapas jungle and don’t attract as many tourists as the other Chiapas highlights. This is why Las Nubes is truly one of the best places to go in Chiapas. The waterfalls stretch for kilometres and we highly recommend doing the full trail to the various viewpoints.

4. Lacandon jungle
The Lacandon Jungle is the most unique place to go in Chiapas! Not only is this the biggest rainforest in Mexico, but it is also home to the Lacandon people, who are the descendants of the ancient Maya. When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, this group fled to the jungle and survived as a culture by living deep in the rainforest. They were out of contact with the rest of the world until the 20th century.

5. Palenque
Palenque was the next stop on our road trip and one of the most famous places to go in Chiapas. Known for its mighty Mayan temples, this place is one of the best examples of Maya architecture in Mexico. Only 2% of the ruins are uncovered, which means that 98% are still covered by the surrounding land. We went on a 3 hour tour of the ruins and the jungle, which we highly recommend. During the final jungle part you’ll uncover houses of the Mayan people and find unique animals of the area.

6. San cristobal de las Casas
The colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas is arguably one of the prettiest cities in all of Mexico. Its Historical Centre is filled with gorgeous colourful architecture and wide patios against a mountain backdrop. But besides being charming, this town is also extremely interesting thanks to its ancient past and blend of different cultures.

7. Sumidero Canyon
The Sumidero Canyon was the final stop on our road trip around Chiapas. It’s located right outside the city of Tuxtla Guttierez, and can be explored from the water as well as from the canyon walls. We did a boat ride from Chiapa de Corzo, which takes you through the canyon for 2 to 3 hours.

OAXACA, MEXICO | The Perfect Oaxaca Travel Itinerary (Coast to the Mountains in 2-3 weeks)

Oaxaca lies in the southwest of Mexico. It’s made up of a vast coastline and rugged mountains, with narrow valleys, canyons and ravines between them. Oaxaca is best known for its unique cuisine as well as its indigenous people and cultures. The largest indigenous groups are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen groups that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better than most others in Mexico thanks to the state's isolating terrain and commitment to honoring traditions. In this video, we will show you the perfect Oaxaca itinerary. This itinerary is recommended for at least a 14 day stay in Oaxaca and can be completed by public transportation, rental car, or a mix of both!

Stop 1: Puerto Escondido
How to get here: Direct flights from Mexico City and Guadalajara
Recommended stay: 3-5 days

Stop 2: Mazunte
How to get here: Bus from Puerto Escondido to Pochutla and tell the bus driver that you want to get off at San Antonio. From there, you’ll have to take a taxi or local collectivo.
Recommended stay: 1-2 days

Stop 3: Zipolite
How to get here: 20-minute taxi ride from Mazunte
Recommended stay: 1-2 days

Stop 4: San José del Pacifico
How to get here: Bus from Lineas Unidas Bus station in Zipolite directly to José del Pacifico
Recommended stay: 2-3 days

Stop 5: Oaxaca City
How to get here: Bus from San José del Pacifico main road to Oaxaca City (bus leaves every hour)
Recommended stay: 7 days including day trips as mentioned below

Stop 6: Mitla
How to get there? Take a bus or rent a car from Oaxaca City, which will take you here in approximately 1 hour.
Recommended stay: day trip

Stop 7: Hierve el Agua
How to get there? Located 70 kms or 43 miles from Oaxaca City, this is another site you can do as a day trip. You can rent a car or take a tour from Oaxaca. Alternatively, you can come by collectivo from Mitla.
Recommended stay: day trip

Stop 8: Pueblos Mancomunados
How to get there? There are buses to Cuajimoloyas and Benito Juárez that leave from the “second class” bus station in Oaxaca City a few times a day. The driver will drop you off near the “tourist office” where you can book your activities and accommodation.
Recommended stay: 1-5 days

Where to next?
After exploring the highlights of Oaxaca, you can continue your journey across other states in Mexico. The most common travel route goes to the southeast to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. It’s possible to take the ADO night bus from Oaxaca City, which takes about 12 hours.

Alternatively, you can head to the north towards Puebla and Mexico City. Puebla is another beautiful city and gateway to the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. It takes about 4 hours to get here.

Palenque: An Adventurer's Paradise! (Chiapas, Mexico Travel Vlog + Guide)

Chiapas, Mexico is one of the most beautiful places in the world!
It really has it all: jungles, deserts, rolling green fields, the coast, and even high elevation mountain cities with cool year-round weather!

We were entering Chiapas from the Yucatan Peninsula, so Palenque was the perfect place to enter into Chiapas for us. Palenque is mostly known for its ruins but there is SO much more to do and see there.
Dozens of waterfalls, some of which are among the best in the world, chapaya fruit that taste like meat that you can find almost nowhere else in the world, wild monkeys and scarlet macaws and so much more!

Some things have changed there with travel regulations so we've included a lot of current tips and info.

Stay tuned until the end to 'meet' the crazy howler monkeys! They are truly amazing animals and really blew our minds!

All in all, Palenque is a MUST SEE travel destination and one of the best places in the world to explore for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike in 2021!

Here's the link for the Airbnb we spent a week in:

Tips on WiFI:

We also ended up spending one extra night at a local hotel called Hotel Sevilla, which at the date of booking was $25 usd (500 pesos). Although the WiFi was decent in the rooms, both floors had a lobby with EXCELLENT WiFi. (We had 50+ mbps in the lobby!) So fast internet service is very possible in Palenque. We were nervous when heading into town about being able to work online there but it is doable. If all else fails, head to Cafe Jade. We spent at least 2 hours there on 3 different evenings, especially through the rainy days, and had fast and reliable internet speeds in a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. :)

LIVING in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas México

Everything you need to know about San Cristóbal de las Casas!

What's it like to live in San Cristóbal de Las Casas? We spent 7 months in San Cristóbal and got to know just about every inch of it. San Cristóbal is located in the southernmost state of Mexico called Chiapas, and is an amazing place for so many reasons. Perhaps this is why it holds the distinguished title of one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos or Magic Towns.

This is the first in a series of videos we are putting out about San Cristobal and our travels over half a year around Chiapas. Have you been to San Cris? Let us know if you have questions, or drop a comment below and let us know your experience. We also put together a Top 10 video for things to do in the city:

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, MEXICO | 6 Things You MUST DO in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca

Puerto Escondido is a laid-back beach town located along the West Coast in the State of Oaxaca. It’s one of the most popular beach destinations along the Oaxacan coast, attracting mostly surfers and backpackers. Once you set foot in Puerto Escondido, you’ll fall madly in love with the beaches, authentic food, and relaxed vibes. In this video, we highlight 6 things that you cannot miss in Puerto Escondido. Spend at least 3 to 5 days in the area to be able to fit them all in!

???? WHERE WE STAYED:
- Playa Bruja Zicatela:

6. Beach Hike from Playa Principal to Playa Manzanillo

At number 6 we have the beach hike from Playa Principal to Playa Manzanillo. The walkway sits right next to the water and starts from the western end of Playa Principal. It has a few scenic overlooks and you can spot many birds and crabs along the way. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to get to Playa Manzanillo, where you can refresh in the calm waters or have a drink!

5. Try Local Food

The state of Oaxaca in general is known for its delicious cuisine. With ingredients such as chocolate, Oaxaca cheese, mezcal, grasshoppers, and mole sauce, there’s so many unique dishes that you have to try.

4. Manialtepec Lagoon / Bioluminescence

Only a short 20-minute drive from Puerto Escondido sits the Manialtepec Lagoon. This beautiful lake is a sanctuary for birds and home to bioluminescent plankton. It’s a peaceful and quiet place that is best explored by boat tour or by kayak.

☑️ Turtle release + bioluminescence tour:

3. Day Trip To Mazunte

Another great thing to do when you’re in Puerto Escondido is to visit the nearby sleepy town of Mazunte. To get to there, you can take a local bus from Puerto Escondido. Flag down the bus to Pochutla and hop on until you reach San Antonio. From there you’ll have to take a taxi or local collectivo. Known for its small beach bays, hippie vibes, and sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Mazunte has a certain charm to it.

2. Surf & hit the beaches

Incredible surf conditions are what put Puerto Escondido on the map. It’s known as one of the top surf destinations in the world with the biggest waves coming between April and October at the northern end of Playa Zicatela. But if you’re not an advanced surfer, you can surf the gentler waves at Playa Carrizalillo or La Punta. And of course, you don't have to have an interest in surfing to enjoy the beaches in Puerto Escondido. There are eight beautiful beaches that are waiting to be explored. Our favorite ones include the crescent-shaped beach of Carrizalillo, the large Playa Bacocho, and the bohemian La Punta.

1. Release Baby Turtles

Turtle conservation is a big issue in Puerto Escondido and volunteers monitor more than 30 km of beaches around Puerto Escondido to ensure the turtle eggs don’t get stolen by local people who eat them. They also have several turtle egg hatcheries to help shade the eggs from the sun, which is an important part of the conservation. Every day at Playa Bacocho, baby turtles are released into the ocean. You can pay 100 pesos (5$) to partake in the release at 5pm. You’ll also learn about the turtles and the project. The money you pay goes towards the project, which is a great initiative if you ask us!

--About my Cooperation with G Adventures—
A massive thanks goes out to my Sponsor G Adventures who helped me to pull this off and who were absolute legends in organizing this awesome „Cuba Libre“ tour.

For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers tours which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.
